It’s December 9th, 1941. And line of Blenheim Bombers of the roars to life at Butterworth Airfield, Malaysia. At the front is Squadron Leader Arthur “Pongo” Scarf. But while they are still taking off a transmission comes in. “Bandits to the north!” High in the sky dozens of Ki-27 fighter bombers approach in formation. Then more Ki-27s come in for a lower attack and strafe the airfield. All the planes on the ground except one are incapacitated. Incredibly the crew of this lone Blenheim decide to go on with their mission, alone. Despite his injuries Scarf made a landing near to the hospital where his wife was working and got to see her one last time.

Warmest greetings from Malaysia. I'm a retired fighter pilot formerly with the Royal Malaysian Air Force once stationed in Butterworth. Despite being a bit of a hardcore history buff, esp. on the Japanese invasion of Malaya, this is the first time I am hearing of this particular encounter. That is one brave flight crew. I truly salute the 3 of them, esp. the pilot. That VC is truly well deserved. It's a crime and a shame that a VC could simply be easily sold like that. To the content creators, well done, very well done. Please keep stories on the Invasion of Malaya coming in the future, as stories on specific actions by individuals on the Invasion of Malaya are hard to come by locally here in Malaysia. Many2 thanks and cheers.

RMAF Butterworth is an active Air Force Station of the Royal Malaysian Air Force situated 4.5 nautical miles from Butterworth in Penang, Malaysia. It is currently home to the Headquarters Integrated Area Defence System, part of the Five Power Defence Arrangements. The airfield was originally known as RAF Station Butterworth and later as RAAF Butterworth, under the operational commands of the Royal Air Force and the Royal Australian Air Force respectively. Although the airfield is now an RMAF base, under the terms of the FPDA the RAAF is a co-tenant of the base, maintaining an operational presence in the region alongside the RMAF squadrons. The airfield and associated base facilities are colloquially referred to as Butterworth.

Everyone praises the animations-for good reason-but the sound design in this one is a standout compared to past videos. The way that sound effects and even the music become louder and crisper or quieter and more muffled depending on the perspective from shot to shot is a superb effect that subtly draws attention to the focus of each scene. Also the dynamic lighting of the low sunlight through the cockpit looked great. From a production and presentation standpoint, this is easily the best episode yet.

I myself whenever I visited Taiping, I will stop by at the Commonwealth War Grave Taiping to pay respect to Scarf, one of the most heroic man I've ever read about. And from all the Battle of Malaya/ Singapore heroic stories and anecdotes that I've known, I always wonder why is that the one that has to lose the most were the ones who always willing to die and sacrifice themselves for the cause? Scarf last words to his wife was "Keep smiling Sally." That just breaks my heart thinking about it. 😢 RIP Arthur "Pongo" Scarf. Lest we forget.

The Bristol Blenheim is a British light bomber aircraft designed and built by the Bristol Aeroplane Company which was used extensively in the first two years of the Second World War, with examples still being used as trainers until the end of the war. Development began with the Type 142, a civil airliner, in response to a challenge from Lord Rothermere to produce the fastest commercial aircraft in Europe. Type 142 first flew in April 1935, and the Air Ministry, impressed by its performance, ordered a modified design as the Type 142M for the Royal Air Force as a bomber. Deliveries of the newly named Blenheim to RAF squadrons commenced on 10 March 1937. In service, the Type 142M became the Blenheim Mk. I which would be developed into the more extended Type 149, designated the Blenheim Mk.IV, except in Canada where Fairchild Canada built the Type 149 under licence as the Bolingbroke. The Type 160 Bisley was also developed from the Blenheim but was already obsolete when it entered service. In addition to operating as medium bombers, both versions were converted into heavy fighters by adding a gun pack with four Browning .303 machine guns mounted under the fuselage. The Mk. IV was also used as a maritime patrol aircraft and both aircraft were used as bombing and gunnery trainers once they had become obsolete as combat aircraft. The Blenheim was one of the first British aircraft with all-metal stressed-skin construction, retractable landing gear, flaps, a powered gun turret and variable-pitch propellers. The Mk. I was faster than most of the RAF's biplane fighters in the late 1930s but advances soon left it vulnerable if flown in daylight, though it proved successful as a night fighter. The Blenheim was effective as a bomber but many were shot down. Both Blenheim types were used by foreign operators, and examples were licences built in Yugoslavia and Finland, in addition to Canada.

Superb effort, congratulations on telling this amazing story so well. Unfortunately the PT codes are those for 27 Sqn which flew the fighter version of the Blenheim. Arthur Scarf flew with 62 Sqn his aircraft was L1134 coded FX-F and carried fin flashes. Much confusion has been caused by an incorrectly captioned photograph which it is claimed was Scarf's machine. A few years ago some fabulous Time Life colour photos surfaced, taken around April 1941 which showed the 27 Sqn aircraft painted with blue undersides and a rear fuselage band similar to those worn by UK based day fighters at the time, though they would have been in the colour known as Sky.

The medal was consigned to auction by family , when it sold to a private collector for £550,000 (£660,000 with premium). It's great how the animations are experimenting more and more with all sorts of dynamic angles. And I love these stories where plucky people find themselves isolated from allies and help yet still resolutely go on despite the overwhelming odds.

Every time I see a medal for sale it makes me said. There is a good story behind every single one of them. Sacrifice offered, often paid, for friends, brothers, family and country. Thanks

This video brings to light the fact that wars are waged by countries……but fought by individuals. This story may have a tragic ending, but it also reminds us of the fighting spirit. Not to fight each other, but to fight for those who matter most in our lives. I myself am a Desert Storm Veteran. Each day was a fight to get back to my loved ones back home. This story hits home for me, and I can imagine all of my fellow brothers and sisters in uniform. Thank you Yarnhub for doing all you can to help us remember our past so hopefully we finally find the way to learn from it, and not repeat it again.

Great story. Visited Bispebjerg Cemetery in Copenhagen previous week, spent a few minutes contemplating at the memorial for the Allied airmen killed during WWII and buried there. Their sacrifice is not forgotten. Made a small donation to the gofundme, hope they manage to buy the VC.
