Pattern work is what student pilots practice over and over (and over) again in real life... Abeam runway numbers... Power to decent.... Pitch for flaps operating range... Flaps 1, pitch for 80kts, turn base... Flaps 2, pitch for 70kts... Turn final... Flaps 3... Pitch for 60 until over the threshold.... Flare... Land... Don't ask how I know 🤣🤣🤣

I really appreciate how you articulate things…a lost art. At 68, I’m not sure if flying ( other than FS 2020) is in my future as my sailing is already expensive and (pleasantly) time consuming. There are many similarities in flying and sailing principles. However, since I’ve been in awe of planes and flight forever…maybe it’s time. Thanks for doing such a great job with these. And full disclaimer, I only kept watching initially because Ninja looks Exactly like my precious Marvin who slept next to my head for 15 years! Great job. Thanks Emilie!

Wow, what a great lesson! I only had a very basic understanding about the relationship between power, attitude and trim. After watching your lesson, I feel like I understand it so much better. You are a wonderful teacher! I just tried my first circuit after watching your video, and it was my smoothest landing to date. I was in complete control and touched down exactly where I wanted. I even had real-world weather turned on and was fighting a bit of crosswind and still set the plane down right on the centerline. Thank you so much for such an amazing instructional video.

Hi Emilie. Again loving the tutorials. I’ve been flying flight sim since MSFS 2004. Just with this tutorial, it showed me I’ve been I’ve been landing using the incorrect procedure. The Power, Attitude & Trim info was so useful. I practiced it in the Cessna, then did the same circuit at my airport here in Brisbane in the A320. OMG. It made manual landing in the jet so much easier. Finally getting consistent soft (butter) landings. Thanks for doing these tutorials.

The first pattern turns were amazingly coordinated standard rate turns. Real pro stuff Emilie. For airports not aligned with the cardinal points (N,S,E,W) use the DG to glance at your 90 degree heading prior to turning. Peterborough 27 has PAPI lights which are great for understanding what being on the 3-degree glideslope looks like. One thing that helped me early on was to "fly the numbers". Understanding the specific aircraft with flap configuration, what airspeed would give me the proper rate of descent.

A good, cheap alternative to Track IR is FaceTrackNoIR (about CAD 5.50). As its name suggests, it doesn't use infra red but instead uses your webcam to track the movement of your face without the need for extra equipment. I've had no problems with it and have found it very convenient and easy to use. Another alternative which does use IR is TrackHat. I have used TrackHat and have found it to be reliable but I can't compare it with TrackIR as I've never owned the latter.

The engine characteristics in FS don't help with this. One of the things I really hoped they'd fix in this version (vs. FSX and earlier) is the slow response of piston engines, but it didn't happen. Idle to full power in FS takes 3-4 seconds (longer if using the keyboard for a throttle as there's no longer a dedicated "full throttle" key) but in a real airplane it takes less than a second if you move the lever reasonably fast.

wow wow wow woooooowwww.... much information to my brain Emilie! hahaha... You have a good pedagogical methodology, it is difficult for me to follow you in parts (I understand "some" of English, but the translation is not always the best), so I have to repeat each section several times until I fully understand what you are explaining. It is not the same when it has already been assimilated (your case) as when the one who knows little (like me) imagines what happens. Today, where you explained in minute 7 about attitude and power, suddenly "there was light for me" and I understood what I was doing wrong and why it was difficult for me to land. I am very grateful for the time you take to explain us. Thank you very much and greetings from the South (Patagonia) Argentina !. Daniel

Great video, really enjoying the series. It remind me of an old trick i think one of my instructors taught me always treat the aiming point as if you don't flare at all that would be the spot on the runway you would land, aim for it after you pass it round out use the ground effect to help the aircraft settle and flare just enough keeping the nose to the horizon to put it down on the runway.

First: Immensely grateful for both content and presentation. I was really struggling to do a simple TO-ground loop-landing, until I watched this. (Planning ground school in March. Wanted advance sim work.) I was puzzled by some other sources, and this is well presented. I was still puzzled, though. Mantra: Normal flight: Power=KIAS trim=VSI: note KIAS dependence on trim (07:40) Slow flight: Power=VSI trim=KIAS: note VSI dependence on trim (07:50) @07:40, the key element for me is mentioned in passing: for power to change KIAS at cruise, you must hold/retrim for level flight. This implies that at slow speeds, power change KIAS as long as you retrim for the same descent. I experimented. Cessna 152 2100rpm KIAS=75 trimmed level VSI=0 rpm (slowly)>>2400 VSI>+500 KIAS=75 rpm (slowly)>>2100 VSI>0 KIAS=75 rpm (slowly)>>1800 VSI>-500 KIAS=80 so Power=VSI for same trim for level cruise flight Power=KIAS for retrim for level flight Cessna 152 1500rpm KIAS=65 flaps=10° trimmed VSI=-500 (slow descent) rpm (slowly)>>2100 VSI>+100 KIAS=60 rpm (slowly)>>1200 VSI>-900 KIAS=65 so Power=VSI for same trim for descending slow flight (same as cruise) Power=KIAS for retrim/hold descent rate for descending flight I am not correcting anything here. I am just clarifying for anyone else who found the mantra counter-intuitive. I see a lot of debate about this on other flight fora, and I opine that it is because it not fully explained, except maybe in ground school or flight school. (I suggested to MS that they look at these vids to improve their own "training".)

It’s a bit more advanced of an idea, but when you trim the airplane, you don’t trim it for an attitude. You are actually trimming it for an airspeed. Think about it, the only thing that trim tab knows is the amount of airflow over it. When I trim the airplane “nose-up”, I’m actually trimming it for a slower airspeed. The airplane, once trimmed for that speed, will do whatever it has to do to maintain that speed. So, if I am trimmed at 100 KIAS, and I decide to roll nose-up trim to trim it instead at 80 KIAS, the airplane will pitch up to catch that airspeed. Whether or not the airplane climbs, descends, or maintains level after this depends on your power.
@thefridge714 жыл бұрын
I have seen this in other videos and I have found this to be very helpful. By selecting an airspeed, flap setup then trying my best to maintain that speed with trim I have had my most successful landings. I still have issues with the slope and where to start it to end up not needing to throttle down or up repeatedly but I am getting better. When I get it right I slide onto the runway :) The point is that by focusing on the airspeed I have been able to control my descents and landings more effectively. Cheers Trever.
@junglejetdriver4 жыл бұрын
@@thefridge71 Thanks for the comment! Glad it is working for you! I had the same challenge when learning to fly irl. In real training, we always talk about how on approach, the commands of the airplane are reversed. What that basically means is that when you are on final approach, you control your airspeed with pitch, and you control your altitude with power. Once you have that approach speed nailed, use the elevator to maintain that. If it gets slow, push forward, if it gets fast, pull back. Then use your power to adjust your altitude. If you are high on approach, reduce power, or if you are low, add power. The whole “pitch for airspeed, power for altitude” thing sounds counterintuitive, but once you realize that the airplane flies that way, landings are much easier to control.

Great video! One thing I noticed is that you mentioned reducing power on the roundout if you start to float. Almost every other lesson I've seen has said that you should pull the throttle back to idle as soon as you cross the runway threshold. I assume that's incorrect advice? (I'm referring, of course, to Cessnas and other such small aircraft - I understand that one should never lower the throttles to idle while landing in a Q400, lest it turn into the proverbial "Crash-8." 😄 )
