One of these days you'll be getting videos from SAA pilots flying the new A350-900 out of Johannesburg. The A340-600 is a magnificent machine, having flown on her myself 4 times..

I get a smile out of the cutouts on both pilots' sides where perhaps some optional analog back-up instruments could be. I think I've seen that on multiple A340's in videos, not just this one. But , what a friendly, nice narrative from the captain. I love it.

what are you ralking about? thats not a cutout, thats the speaker

@@Marco-wz3ff Well, right above the speaker there is indeed a cutout, and I think that's where the (optional and extremely rarely ordered) AoA indicator would be.

@@tomsolon9766 I mean they still are here and the chances of Lufthansa bringing them to SAN for a bit more time is actually kind of high. The question is, what aircraft would they replace it with for the route?

WELL DONE!! One week from today, I am flying from Newark airport to my native country of Sweden for two weeks. I will be flying with Scandinavian Airlines Airbus A330 it is one of my favorite planes. I’m going to miss that one too when it gets retired. However, SAS is buying the Airbus A350-900 they will be flying on their Newark Copenhagen route. That is the route that we live. Another words, I’ll have a pretty good chance of flying on that plane!!

The last time I flew out of Jo'burg was in July 1999 on SABENA A340 to Brussels, then onto Gatwick. I thought the A340 was such a smooth aircraft and the Service on SABENA very accommodating! I was very surprised when I heard they had gone belly-up..... We must have been on one of the last flights! Little did we know at the time. I have only ever flown once on SAA, and that was way back in 1970 from Salisbury, Rhodesia to Frankfurt via Ile do Sol. I think we had to fly over the Ocean back then so it was a long flight, but very comfortable on the old now but new then Boeing 707. It was my first time on an aircraft at the age of 11..... I slept a lot of the time as there was no In Flight Entertainment back then, just some horrible earphones that played pretty rubbish music - over and over again!! But the food was good.... Thanks SAA! Thanks for a great Video. Ciao.

I had the wonderful privilege to experience this once about 5yrs ago when I was in the cockpit jump seat. I was the airline's ground handling service provider security representative and we were flown for a security briefing at HQ. On the way there i was in a normal seat among other passengers, but upon my return, I got the jump seat. It's in cases like these or when you're an off duty crew member that u get to book the jump seat inside the cockpit. It's up to the airline pilot who gets to decide who gets that hot spot lol.

Not as much eh, you don’t need to be doing calculus but your computational arithmetic needs to be quick, do degrees, quick divisions etc.. Everything is so computerized these days you just input into the FMS and the AP will calculate your angle of attack, rate of ascent/descent etc etc..

Pleasant Captain to fly with. Smooth handling by the SFO. Is it SAA SOP that the CM2 has hands on the TLs till thrust is set or to remove the hand after commanding the Thrust to be set? In case of a reject take off with the FO's hand on the TL then is it the FO that rejects the Take Off? How I trained on the Airbus is releasing the hand as you set approximate Take off Thrust, which in the Airbus case is the required TL Detent and let the Captain take off over the TL for his decision to reject or continue before V1. Good crew co-ordination.I would love to some day taste the A340-600 simulator. Am curious how the initial rotation is handled properly to avoid a tail strike and offer optimum rotation rate. I assume it has two stages of rotation and that is what the SRS will guide?
