This is probably my favorite episode of James and Mike. That legitimate wonder and excitement they both experienced from spotting a cave and pondering its inner contents was the very starry eyed wonderment that made playing a game back in the day such a joy. It makes me really happy to see people can still have that all these years later :).

This is what makes the N64 great- exploration; finding a star in a sea side cave in Pilot Wings 64 or a key in Diddy Kong Racing made games on the N64 seem full up on secrets and spots to find out and built a real place to delve in to.

I used to play this game nonstop. It's funny because it was one of the US N64 launch titles and yet I developed an absolute obsession with it around 2000-2001. This game was nonstop entertainment for me. One of the things I used to *love* doing was taking the Gyrocopter and going to one of the missions that's in Little States. Then, I would land it on one of the streets. The streets actually stretch the entirety of the map, so I would drive the copter just slow enough so it wouldn't take off and I could turn corners easily. I would pretend that I was taking a road trip across the USA and just see all the sights. It probably sounds weird to some, but it was so much fun for me. Also, if I recall correctly, that star they were trying to get brings you into the Birdman minigame for that stage.

You get the Birdman outfit, which lets you fly. I remember my mom renting the game one weekend and the person who'd played it before me must have gotten all the stars because the Birdman outfit was available. I loved using it. You can fly at night with the Birdman outfit and it's pretty fun. I loved flying way out over the ocean.

The sense of freedom is unique in this game. Who cares about the fuckin badges, its all about exploration and fooling around like these two guys do. Pilotwings 64 was a deluxe launch title for the n64 and with Super Mario 64 you needed no more to enjoy the console at the time of its release.

The exploration was half the fun in this game, especially with that super-mellow hang glider soundtrack. The other half of the fun was seeing what parts of the landscape you could shoot that cannonball guy into.

This was actually a pretty solid open world exploration/ flying / sandbox game, and it was released as a launch title for the Nintendo 64 in 1996. Since then, there were only a couple of other open world games ever released for the system.

My favorite thing to do in this game was to use the gyro-copter on the America mock up stage and drive cross country. While still on the runway, hold the brake as you begin accelerating; this prevents you from gaining enough speed to actually lift off. At this point, just steer the gyro-copter along the roads. If I remember correctly, you start on the west coast and one of the roads leads out of the city and across the entire map, halfway through, there's a gas station that you can refuel at too! Man, I never should have sold this game...

This game truly is nostalgic for me. My 7-10 year old self going to hang out with my youngest uncle and playing Pilot Wings 64, Star Wars Shadows of the Empire, Star Wars Rouge Squadron, Super Mario 64, and probably a few others before I got a 64 myself. I probably spent a few hundred hours on Pilot Wings 64, one of my favorites of all time. So many great memories with this game, a big part of my childhood in fact.
