That guy that told you about the AVGAS was completely right,it will run hotter and the overhaul intervals will be shorter,but he was absolutely correct!

A Turbine engine will burn ANY combustible fluid, JetA, Diesel, Avgas, or Vodka. Diesel and JetA are actually both Kerosene (JetA is just slightly purer). AvGas will burn just fine in a turbine engine, the only difference will be a sightly higher temperature. The R-66 POH doesn't permit it, but several other aircraft POHs do. If you are ever stuck, a splash of 10 gallons of AvGas so you can make it to a good airport with JetA won't hurt a thing (I'd dilute it out with a full tank of JetA at the first opportunity). Now putting JetA in a piston engine (diesels excepted) is an entirely different story. That absolutely will destroy your engine immediately. Basically as soon as you pull pitch, you will get severe detonation. If you get even a cup of jet fuel in your fuel tank ground the aircraft until you can do a full flush of the fuel system. This is a royal PITA, but you can't have even an ounce of kerosene in there.

you get detonation when you put gas in a diesel engine

Hey there i really like to watch your videos but it´s a pity that you almost never show approaches, landings and take-offs. Wish you would share that with us too; inkl. cockpit view with airspeed etc.

Hi Mischa, As always, love your videos. In reference to someone suggesting you use avgas instead of jet fuel, the following is from the Aviation Maintenance Technician Series of textbooks and may be where he got that info from. We just happened to have covered this chapter last week so it was fresh in my mind. Obviously, referring to the POH for the R66 would be correct data source. "Many aviation gas turbine engine manufacturers allow some aviation gasoline to be used in their turbine engines when turbine fuel is no available. The amount of time aviation gas can be used is limited for two reasons: the tetraethyl lead in the aviation gasoline can causes deposits to form on the turbine blades, and aviation gasoline does not have the lubricating properties that kerosine has. Using too much gasoline can cause excessive wear on the fuel control" (Crane, 2005, p. 620). Reference Crane, D. (2005). Ground Operation and Servicing. In Michmerhuizen, Terry (Ed). Aviation Maintenance Technician Series: General. (3rd ed.) (pp. 607 - 647). Newcastle, WA: Aviation Supplies and Academics, Inc.

Went through the AVM program at Rock Valley College in IL and remembered the deposits on the turbine blades but highly recommend NOT to do that but very possible

Just to clarify. You can use a gas in at least some turbine engines for a specific amount of time between overhauls. For example in the PT6 series if engines you can use a gas for a total of 150 hours between overhauls. This is obviously for emergency type situations.

Flying the Rockies has to be an amazing experience (you guys live right next to mountains so maybe not for you), hopefully one day soon I'll be back in the pilot seat. Haven't been able to use my license in about 8 years and have the itch really bad to do something in aviation. Maybe one day I could start my own helicopter business as I long to be in air again.

Had a 1985 Chevette (car before your time probably) with an Isuzu diesel engine. Put regular gas in once in a pinch on the way to KOSH. Of course one does not tamper with turbine engines. Does the R66 have an autopilot to help manage fatigue on a long flight?

Depends on the turbine, P&W allows it on the PT6 we run for a max of 150 hours before overhaul.....although I've never done it or heard of someone run AVGas......I'll stick to Jet-A

You're wrong about avgas "destroying" the R66 turbine engine. In an emergency, a turbine engine pilot most certainly can use AVGAS, but there will be post-flight operational protocols, depending on how many hours you run the turbine engine on AVGAS. Of course, you fellows had no emergency so it was not recommended.

George Keseg the flight took about 2100 litres or about 550 gallons of fuel. It was about 2400 miles. We bought the helicopter in Florida and were bringing it back to our base new Vancouver BC.

Most Turbine engines will run just fine on avgas. The Rolls Royce RR300 is a certified Multi-fuel engine.The electronic fuel computers even have a setting for Avgas, that changes the density computation so the fuel control flows the correct amount of fuel for the engine. There are normally time limits though mostly due to the additives that avgas fuels have in them which jet fuels don't have. Jet fuels have a lower volatility than avgas, but a higher thermal value per gallon. So with avgas, you get higher temps and less thrust generation Avgas should not pose any problem in a RR300/Allison 250. Engine temps would be hotter and you might not get full power before overtemp, but that should be it, at least in a short term situation. In most turbines, it’s more of a maintenance issue than an operational one.Contact Robinson Helicopters Technical Support and Customer Service they’re very helpful. robinsonheli.com/technical-support/
@PilotYellow7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the input. However in the R66 POH it doesn't state avgas as an approved fuel. Therefore if you have an accident there would be no insurance coverage for it.
@dfender1106 жыл бұрын
Electronic? there are no electronics or computers on the RR300 in the Robinson Helicopters. The FADEC concept was dropped for budgetary reasons early on in the design change. It is only multi fuel when you consider the different grades of heavy fuels available. JetA, JP4,5,8, Kerosene and other fuels with as high specific gravity. It can be made to run on avgas with an adjustment and a fuel nozzle change but neither are authroized by Rolls Royce or Robinson Helicopters. I am a certified RR300 and R66 Mechanic.
