The Samurai had french support. And the french taught them to march in collumn against enemy lines. They really used Napoleons Musked warfare tactics for Rifle-Muskets and Gatlings. Two years later they had nothing learned from the defeats of their officers in Japan and went into the french and german war in the same manner. And if that wasn't enough, they invaded south Germany in 1914 in exactly the same manner. Officers with saber on horse, line infantry, flags and drumms. The Schwabian infantry took position in moats, behind walls and used MGs. How that ended is clear. German counter offensive until the Marne battle where the english saved the day. The english had learned their lessons in south africa.

Well it kinda depends what your naval play style is, if you go balls to the wall choose French, if you like conventional choose British, if you like naval sniping where you kill all their ships without anything happening to you like a coward but is by far the most effective choose USA.

I've started a game as Saga once and for some reason within like the first two years all clans except Tosa had joined the Shogunate and all of them had decided to spam me with fleets and land armies. It took me forever to establish myself in a strong military position by researching high end fleets and then I finally controlled the seas but each fleet i had needed to fight like 4-5 fleets every round and I'd always have to manually fight because the automatic battle thing ignored fully the benefits of range, steel armored hull and explosive ammunition, so in automatic battles id suffer massive damage too expensive to repair. .. at that point i gave up because i realized i would need a real life decade to win the campaign

Ah the Saga domain, definitely one of the hardest FotS campaign I have played, their infantry roster is very basic and they don't even have a single unique unit unlike other domains. Using just Line Infantry for most fights until I unlocked Imperial Infantries was really a pain, but hey at least their cannons are devastating

I remember first playing the Fall of the Samurai and it felt kinda.... sad and melancholic how the orthodox clans were getting their troops massacred in futile head on charges. Truly the "times change" kind of experience. And then the modernised clans started to switch sides. Holy shit the carnage.
