I have no background with this series, but the 2024 reboot impressed me over all the callbacks, easter eggs, and the respect it has to its source material. I genuinely hope they get another game; if there's anything I learned from modern gaming landscape, I don't trust any mainstream reviews towards horror games anymore.

Unfortunately it seems like Pieces have had to drop people post the release of the game. I sincerely hope it doesn't mean that we're gonna have to wait another decade for another Alone in the Dark game, and even more that the people who've lost their jobs will find new and more secure ventures very soon!

Your video essays are so personal. It's a touch I've rarely seen from other media analysis. Finding broad, sweeping themes in single pieces of story is a staple of the genre, but the way you connect those grand narratives with real personal journeys and offer us that connection to our own lives touches something deep even for someone like me who has played very few horror games. It kinda parallels the horror genre where the apocalyptic, the terrifying and the mind-bending is often a landscape for characters' internal struggles. I honestly find myself getting emotional at the end of almost every one. Today, as I approach 30, you called up memories of my own journey, my lifelong desires, and who I want to be. Like Alone in the Dark for you, I think this might change me in some way. I'm probably going to be sitting with this one for a while. Thank you.

I really do wish that Carnby's route in the remake focused more on finding out about the cult and possibly trying to stop Emily breaking the Pact. Emily's route just felt more cohesive comparatively and thematically. It was still damn fun to watch and play though, and I genuinely hope they make another game. Would love to see them do a spin on AITD2.

1:10:14 I think the authors intentionally made the topic of lobotomies somewhat frivolous. This well shows how flippant people were about this dreaded procedure in those days. But nevertheless, it should be noted that Dr. Grey (the only doctor character in the game) is somewhat aware that lobotomy is unethical, and tries to postpone this procedure to the last resort. That makes Gray a somewhat appropriate doctor for the times.

Despite my general feelings on it, I do think it was nice that Dr Grey was against the idea.

JUSTICE FOR EDWARDS MOUSTACHE! GIVE THE REPTILE HIS FACIAL HAIR BACK! Bit late getting to this but what a brilliant video. You've always had a very positive tone to your work but there was such a joyful glee in this retrospective that was delightful to watch. And it was great seeing how each game did things differently, as you said even the terrible 2008 game had some interesting ideas: the dvd menu is honestly genius, I'd love to see another developer use that idea as it would be a great way to let players replay just their favourite sections of games or skip sections they didn't enjoy (the closest I've seen another game do to that is Primal's cutscene selection but that was nowhere near as in depth as this). I must get around to finishing the original game, and definitely need to put the remake on my wishlist. Loved this so much, feel like I say this with every new upload but this is definitely a new favourite video. Also on a final note, that brief comparison between the aesthetic of the original Alone In The Dark and Gregory Horror Show was oddly prudent and now has the gears in my brain turning.

Great video! Love your analysis of the new reboot, I've seen plenty of people not getting it or being disappointed by the limited scope of the game but for me this game was amazing, I was transfixed from start to finish and loved every single little easter egg in it. Love that there is a director's commentary in the game too, made me realize that it was vital to block off certain areas in chapter 4 so that you have to pass by the tree and be a bit suspicious of it (especially if you know about the first game). It's one of those games I had to 100% complete.

I think what it is that makes me happy whenever I hear something I like was created by a fellow Swede in some part is not so much patriotism as it is a silly parasocial feeling of it closeness, if that makes any sense. I went to my very first convention (for Anime, despite being desperately under versed on the genre/fandom at the time) purely because Mary Elizabeth McGlynn *and* the Silent Hill band including Akira Yamaoka were going to perform. I cashed in almost instantly. It wasn't until months later I found out that they each were doing Q&A panels AND free meet and greets + signatures. I practically piddled. *No one* comes to this town. Honestly, you're lucky if someone comes to the capital 1 1/2hrs away and even then it's impossibly cost-prohibitive. One of the most amazing flukes of my life.
