I also find it a bit ironic that it was in parody film that he actually told the truth about who he was and what he really did. Of course, using that framework allowed him to resume business as usual with essentially zero accountability. Essentially he pulled a Shatner "Hey, I'm in on the joke too!" refrain.

The read on Scream does it disservice imo. It didn't stop at Sidney having sex and not dying, it was woven into her having to deal with her mom being slutshamed, and herself being pressured to have sex by Billy. The movie actually has something to say about the way horror movies lust after the same women they judge, whereas Scary Movie only pretends to mock that oversexualisation while actually indulging in it. Instead of talking about sexual shame in women, it shames Cindy for her pubic hair. Had a similar scene been in Scream, we'd have been mad at Billy for seeing Sidney that way, but Scary Movie just wants us to find Cindy disgusting.
@CheziahKatt Жыл бұрын
I feel like taking stock in the liberation of female sexuality is kind of like when people reclaim kind of toxic stereotypes. Because like... that was in there to be made fun of, not to be admired. And not saying that we shouldn't do it but it would be slightly disingenuous not to acknowledge that. (Edit in: similar to your stance on Ray as a character. Like if we took the reworking of "he's into dudes, they're all oblivious" it's a reclaimed sort of stereotype but otherwise it was just humor to laugh at.)
@pimscrypt Жыл бұрын
I see your point, although I think the intention doesn’t necessarily have to undermine how a scene or character is ultimately read. The difference between the sex scene and Ray, I think, is that Ray’s whole arc ends with him denying who he is. Had there been a scene at the end where he says something like “yeah, I’m gay! I thought I would survive longer if I didn’t tell you all” that would’ve excused a whole lot of other things about his character. While you’re probably supposed to laugh at Cindy’s pleasure as well, I personally think it’s just easier to see the positive aspect of how that part of her character is treated.

I once asked my English teacher, who was really obsessed with our art being used to further social justice, if that had to be the point all the time and he basically said “you can write whatever you want but at some point you do have to circle back and make a difference” and I felt like that was a cop out and this franchise proves that you can make fun, dumb art that actually does say something about social issues but also can be mainstream (even if ultimately it was probably not successful in making any type of change).

Scary Movies 1-3 are still some of the greatest spoof comedies ever made. Right up there with The Naked Gun and Spaceballs (I know SM3 got given to Zucker. It's still good, though decidedly tamer than SM1 and 2). Scary Movie 4 is still decent, but was the beginning of the decline, in my opinion. Not Another Teen Movie and Scary Movie 3 were the genre's swansong, followed by years of Friedberg and Seltzer slowly killing the genre from the inside out. 16:04 I actually learned something about this. F&S's contributions to the first Scary Movie consist of one joke, and they more or less thought "what if we made a funnier Scream?" around the same time as the Wayans bros. So, after some back and forth through agents or whatever, they got their names tacked on the end of the writer credits, and rode that star to fertile fields of mediocrity for the rest of their careers. Lastly, I'm fairly confident in saying (this week, at least) that Scary Movie 2 is my favorite of the bunch. And that almost solely lies on the shoulders of Regina Hall. She absolutely shined throughout the movie.

These movies were my FAVORITES growing up! I didn't even catch on to the later ones being bad until I saw date movie in theaters. It's funny how, as a trans person, I've always spoke up for the first two entries based on my childhood experiences and yet I completely forgot about the blatant transphobia and ableism in those entries. Still, they're pretty foundational movies that are absolutely worth the analysis you've shared here. Great video! (Also I cracked tf up at "two thousand and zero", thank you)

You can see a similar thing with REC and Quarantine for zombie films, where they stripped the plot of everything that made it Catalonian & removing the religious aspects for no other reason than that there were other zombie films with biological causes at the time.

I knew even before watching this that I was gonna love hearing your perspective and Yhara Zayd's on the topic, and that ended up being true! I first want to congratulate you because this video was really cool and interesting to listen to regarding the horror genre, as well as what we can take away from the franchise. I would like to talk a little bit about the Scream comparison and my take on it. Scary Movie 1 was a movie I really didn't like (and I didn't watch the sequels because of this), and of course the comparison with Scream is something almost everyone already talked about, but I think there is a reason why Scream resonated with me a lot more. Scream is deconstructing the slasher subgenre, but it does so in a way that feels not only really well thought out, but also not self-deprecating at all. That maybe isn't the right word, but basically it's not ashamed of being a horror film. Because of this approach, I think it's able to tackle the subgenre's tropes and problems really well, while also telling a emotional story and having fun with itself. But because It's already a pretty good deconstruction of a slasher, if you decide to use this as a basis for a parody, there is a problem : Where do you go from here? How do you deconstruct and/or parody this even further? And for me the answer Scary Movie 1 chose was to abandon subtlety, and just be mean and vulgar. Now, subletly isn't automatically good of course, it's just a tool. And when it comes to creators from marginalised and oppressed groups, it would be really disrespectful to tell them that they shouldn't be loud and direct regarding important topics, especially when they finally have an opportunity to tell the stories they want in the way they want (the negative response behind Black Christmas 2019 is really frustrating because of this). Unfortunately, the way Scary Movie 1 chooses to be loud is by falling into offensive stereotypes, drowning in ableism, homophobia and transphobia (the scenes with Miss Mann almost made me stop watching for how awful her character was written and portrayed) Because of this, not only does the movie makes a pretty bad impression, it also makes the better jokes in the movies either not land for me, or are way too simplistic, like the Halloween reference with the killer being seen from the class window. With that being said, I definitely agree with your conclusion that thoses movies are interesting, it's important to talk about that, and your analysis as well as Yhara Zayd's was fascinating to listen to, and I also learned a lot of stuff from it, so it was a really cool to watch! Great job!
@pimscrypt Жыл бұрын
Someone pointed out a quote from Community while I was writing the script for this video. Something like “The time of subtlety is over, it died with Scary Movie”, and I think that’s fairly accurate. I think that describes a bunch of both the good and the bad of this franchise. I can see your point about Scream commentating on the genre without looking down on it, and that I can agree with for sure. However, I think it sometimes, or even often, prioritize it’s own literacy of horror media over hard hitting commentary. Still, I’ve grown to enjoy the franchise. I especially liked Scream 5! Thank you for the kind words! I’m very glad you liked the video, and the work we both put into it!

Great work, both of you. These aren't films I've really considered since I first saw them (and I only ever saw the first two), and it gave me a lot to think about on their perspective on horror. The Wayans can be hit and miss, and they took the "easy" route too often, but you guys are absolutely right that it is fascinating to look at this as their view of the tropes in horror movies. For a horror parody recommendation, it's not a big goofy parody like this, or Brooks' stuff, but I got a real kick out of The Rise of Leslie Vernon. I also consider Final Destination 2 to be a parody, and a brilliant one, but apparently it's actually a serious movie.

This was so much fun, really excellent video! I don't really have much connection to the Scary Movie franchise. I've watched a couple of the films, but I can't say they really stuck with me. I had a bit of fun watching them mostly just to see familiar horror scenes twisted to ridiculous levels, but I don't think I'll be returning to them anytime soon. However you've given me a bit more appreciation for some things the early films did, Buffy especially feels like a character I overlooked so thank you for that. And thank you for introducing me to Yhara! Her part in this was absolutely fascinating, I'll definitely have to check out her work. I will say though, that scene in Scary Movie 4 where they speak random Japanese words always bothered me too. I didn't clock the whitewashing of Japanese horror at the time because I'd only seen the American remakes of The Ring and The Grudge, but the racism was still clear. But what really bothered me is that I feel like this could have been a funny scene... if the ghost spoke proper Japanese. He literally says "your Japanese is shit", but that means nothing if he's saying the same nonsense as her. If he had spoken in actual Japanese then the joke would be at the expense of the racists instead of just being racist and nothing else. Would it have made the film any better? Probably not and I doubt anyone else cares, but it feels like a waste of a setup.

I think this Spoof Slapstick Comedy franchise was made to be a response to stuff like all the horror movie fans at the time acting like they know everything about comedy because those legit horror movies were supposed to be SATIRE. What people fail to realize that this was the same decade where people watched popcorn flicks with very little allegory and absorbed some of the wrong stuff when it came to movies like Starship Troopers. Then people wonder why Idiocracy is being called a documentary. Just remember? Some of these directors and writers were NEVER COMEDIANS.

I love horror itself though. I am rather partial to the haunting of bly manor, midnight mass and the fall of the house of usher. crypTV, horror podcasts like the magnus archive, a voice from darkness, the gothic horror classics like frankenstein and dracula, hp lovecraft though I am really glad the guy is dead or else I would not touch his writings with pliers and gloves . . . for me horror works best if it makes you do a good part of the work yourself . . . the aliens from the thing and alien are at bets gross to look at . . . but stranger things, there the investment in the characters goes a long way at making it work!
