You're totally right. The minute his art or ideas start moving they just come off as cheesy and silly. Way scarier as just still images. Interested in World of Horror now.

The black text screen before the reveal of the boss reminds me of the NES game Sweet Home, which has a little build-up to each enemy you fight; foes don't show up right away on the field, and a tense little tune similar to the drowning song from Sonic the Hedgehog plays, then there's a beat of silence, and then the monster shows up. If you're unfamiliar with Sweet Home, I do recommend looking it up, if only for the novelty of seeing an NES horror game that actually managed to do some spoopy stuff well.

I've heard of Sweet Home many times. I'd love to play it someday, and watch the film it was based on. Thank you for reminding me of it!

I think the issue you're pointing out is consistent with people who want every comic adapted. Comics are an underappreciated medium. Most of the time I think they execute stories as well if not better (at times) than live action or animation depending on the material. Some people just can't sit down and read a comic and companies that adapt stories don't get what makes comics/novels special. Sometimes adaptations can compete or do better but I find it annoying how much film depends on written/drawn content. Not everything needs to be turned into a film to be appreciated. But I'm a weirdo that thinks the best way to tell stories is in song format.

I remeber reading, I think The Hunter of the Dark, or some other late Lovecraft story and remember being struck by the impression, after having seen so many stories by him and others where characters continue writing down their stories well beyond the point where it seems meaningless or even harmful to continue writing as opposed to running away or whatever, that in this case it felt more like the cosmic horror had sort of possessed the protagonist, that they were compelled to sit there writing it all down by like, the mental weight of the horror, despite knowing that it was putting them in more danger. I mostly think of this because of the discussion of weird tonal dissonance in the middle of the horror story in game where you suddenly run errands before returning to the middle of a horrible encounter. I wonder if that would be something that the game could lean into, having some flexibility built into the more gamey elements so that when they intrude into later parts of the game they could potentially be used to heighten the idea that something was wrong rather than just killing the tension.

I am now thinking of Annihilation 2018 and how it at times fucked off and let it’s horror imagery breathe for a moment. It was also quite good with its own cosmic horror and not telling the viewer how they should feel. I wonder what a Junji Ito adaptation in a similar style would’ve looked like. Thank you for this video it was a joy 🧡

I know this video is 4 years old and I'm a little bit late at the party, but 1) I love it and 2) I feel the inadaptability of Lovecraft's work on the screen comes from the fact that the narrator is always intradiegetic and the narration is always through his words, which leave place for the reader to fill up what is not said. Simplistic idea but : The Color Out of Space movie would work way better in black and white because the audience would have to fill what is not shown, the color.
@pimscrypt2 ай бұрын
If you didn’t already know, I’m happy to share that there is in fact a black and white version film adaptation of The Color Out of Space, a German film called Die Farbe. I haven’t seen it myself, but I guess one of the potential downsides is that it supposedly takes a whole bunch of liberties with the source material that may make it feel too different from the original story.

Absolutely fantastic video! I feel like this deserves way more views than it has, I agree with absolutely everything you said! Personally- I've been on a journey to find an objective solution to the problems faced by trying to adapt Ito's work, and I believe that I recently found the answer in the most unconventional way I could've. If you want to have a discussion about this and to hear my ideas and perspective on the matter- my twitter is @RamujiHorror. You can DM me there if you so choose. In any case, thanks for making such a wonderful video! I hope I'll be able to share my ideas soon!

@@pimscrypt Omg thank you so much!!!! I totally didn't expect that! Also the reason I said it was the "objective way" was more so due to the fact that I found a way to remove all of the intrinsic fundamental issues that people face when trying to adapt his work. I hope to see more Ito related content in your future, you're really well spoken and the structure of this video was wonderful!

Junji Ito Collection was the worst anime of 2018 by far (except maybe Goblin Slayer). Hoping Toonami does a better job since they seem to be going for kind of a motion comic vibe, but I don't know.

I'm skeptical about that Uzumaki adaptation, but if they're going for the same esthetic as in the trailer then it definitely could be better than the Junji Ito Collection!

I think the reason the Junji Ito collection didn’t live up to it’s potential was because it was placed in the hands of studio deen who’s been on a downward spiral (pun intended)
