My first Pimsleur program was Vietnamese, and at first I did not think it helped me much. After I arrived in Vietnam I soon found out it did help me a lot and I was able to understand a lot of the basic conversation around me, and speak it too. I purchased Pimsleur's Spanish to refresh my Spanish and have also found it to be very helpful. As an added note, I studied Japanese in university, Spanish in Costa Rica, and soon I will be on my way to Mexico to continue my Spanish studies there. German in Germany, and when I was in Vietnam I studied Vietnamese. I think Pimsleur is excellent support material for language learning.

Your review was very balanced and thorough. My daughter is going to Spain for Study Abroad in a couple of months, and despite the last name, she understands some things, but cannot converse. We were on the fence, but after your review I think I’m a little closer to making a decision on a program for her so that she can have some peace of mind with basic language since the trip alone is scary enough for her. Thank you!

Same! I can't tell you how many times I've only had Spanish speaking Uber drivers and or personal clients interested in buying my from my small business - who know no English...and I wanted so badly to speak to them because they were so kind. I primarily felt even worse when I intuitively felt the sense that they just wanted someone else to fluently talk to...it's really not as common as it should be. People move to the US sometimes because of other terrible circumstances they need to escape and it is so foreign to them. The USA is an English speaking country, BUT, Spanish/Espanol comes in second place. It's the same with people in Canada, they should also learn French, as it is the same thing over there essentially as Spanish is to the US. French is the second most common language in thee land of our friendly neighbors. It's important for connection and social skills. It's also healthy for the brain. I've been trying to learn. For starters, I've started labeling household items with sticky notes in Spanish (and also in danish, Hebrew, and German). I was actually raised learning Hebrew so I know how to read it and introduce myself...but it's been so long so it's important that I polish it up and become fluent so that when I visit Israel again, I can have fluent conversations and not just introductory and small talk conversatiosn. I love teaching others things of simple foreign languages..so if you're interested, I also know a variety of other simple Hebrew words.. (ex: Cat - Katool; Butterfly - Par par; Dog - Kelev, Grandma - Arbah; Israel - Yisrael; Hebrew - Eevreet; God - Adonai; Jews - Yehudee; Teacher (feminine) - Morah; Teacher (masculine) - Moreh; I - Anee) and I could go so much further on but...despite this, Spanish is first priority regarding it's importance in the US. Want to keep this already long post short haha. Some 1-10's for fun for language lovers: Hebrew: Achad, Shteim, Shalosh, Arbah, Chamesh, Shesh, Shevah, Shmonah, Taysha, Esser Spanish: Uno, Dos, Tres, Quatro, Cinco, Seis, Siete, Ocho, Nueve, Diez I want to learn 5 languages before I die...or even more who knows. One day at a time.

I got Pimsleur at a great deal for the entire Spanish series. I like it, but i use it in conjunction with a few other apps. I don’t like how it just tells you to say something without an explanation why (like why are we using Lo and Su.. no reason given). I think doing both the speaking stuff and the written together, is a good way for me to learn Spanish (1 month in).
@Elif.-72 жыл бұрын
I agree. I started learning spanish with just grammer in my first month and started pimsleur later. I noticed that i would be confused if i haven’t studied any grammer first because they don’t explain many things. This sound like a good method I like the 60 minutes and more conversation. I find listening is the hard part to learn. I especially like the use of some English that you mentioned. I have to pause and think about the conversations because I just cannot get the words out before they do, and it's spoken so quickly I cannot understand it. I learn best by reading. It would be nice if Pimsleur had captions at the bottom of the screen. I even watch movies and shows with captions always on because I prefer to read - it just registers better. I've found it difficult just sitting there listening to the Pimsleur audio each day, while with Rosetta Stone I haven't had any problems at all. Pimsleur also needs to make much greater use of voice recognition technology; it just feels far more engaging.

So there are 5 levels with 30 lessons in each level and each lesson takes about 1 hour to complete. So if you commit an hour/day you’ll more or less be fluent in said language after 150 days for ~$21/month. That’s not bad. That’s ~$105 for high speed “fluency” in a language. 👀
@TestPrepInsight3 жыл бұрын

Would this help me learn Mexican Spanish? I learned Spanish for a few months on duolingo and when I started talking to my friend from Juarez Mexico, he said I was trying to speak like people in Spain, and I would have a hard time understanding conversations in Mexico. Especially people in casual conversations. It would be like a German learning English from someone in Boston and visiting me in Mississippi. I would be able to understand him, but he would be lost listening to us talk LOL.

The Pimsleur Spanish course is good, but what lets it down is the poor quality of the voice actors, who clearly forget (or are not bothered) that they are being listened to by non-Spanish speakers. There are constantly bad examples of these actors - most particularly the male one - pronouncing words too fast, or slurring them together, which often makes it difficult to figure out what is being said. Another issue is that on the recordings, the treble and upper-mid frequencies (2khz - 4khz) are diminished, which destroys the clarity of speech. I was having to transplant, into the files, audio recordings from online translators, which are of better quality! The mp3 files also have occasional transient clicks littered throughout them, which can prove irritating, particularly when they interfere with the words being spoken. Furthermore, after having loaded the lessons into an audio editor and seeing the waveform of the audio files, I found that the hapless audio engineer had failed to apply sufficient (if any) audio limiting, which results in the files being quieter and less defined than they could have been with some professional quality audio engineering. There is clearly too much amateurism involved in the process.
