I am so excited to give this a shot! I am considered legally blind and have been struggling to find a good program that is more auditory and this seems to be perfect. I love what you said about too much emphasis on grammar at the start doing more harm than good and I could not agree more. I think back to my language learning experience in school and it was just that. I would like to win one of your prices at some point. these videos are incredible I am so glad I found you!!!.

I’ve had some high school Spanish decades ago and have used manuals and Duolingo more recently as my grandkids are studying Spanish. I’ve also found I love watching Chinese romances on KZbin and am picking up some of that language. Your reviews have made me more interested in using the Pimsleur method. My only qualm is I’m older on limited income. I’ve always wanted to learn and now I have the time plus it’s great brain food. Your giveaway would certainly help me achieve that goal. Thanks for the great reviews you offer of the different programs available!

Nice video. Yeah I tried the free trial a few weeks ago and I got half way through the first level. Lately I have been testing out a bunch of apps for Spanish to see what is best for me. This channel has been helpful with that process thank you. But I have been planning on learning Spanish for my friends in Spain. It has been very motivating. But Pimsleur is definitely 1 of my favorites. That service has given me the best luck in learning how to listen to and speak in Spanish pretty well compared to the other services I have used. It is time consuming for each lesson and sometimes the speakers in the audio sections speak a bit too fast and I constantly have to go back to understand, but I honestly still enjoy the process. And just to point out, the reading section for each lesson, for the Castilian Spanish language isn’t as much reading as it is just exposing you to new words. For the most part. Honestly if you haven’t tried it, give it a shot.

Many years ago I worked in an international department with six other people from various Latin American countries and they all spoke Spanish. I was surrounded by the language for eight hours a day and really developed my ear. I have since wanted to take a Spanish course that will give me practice and information to get more conversational. Hi John, thank you for this guide. I'm trying to incubate a new business in Japan to encourage expats IT engineer to live in Japan and learning how to communicate (listen and express) is vital. Your video gave me a good direction of the pros & cons of the 3 services. I much apprecaite your effort! Just for your informatinon, Japan governent will be referencing to CEFR to guage the language efficiency than the traditional JLPT. They also recognize how important practical usage of language is than the old school way.

I have gone through Unit 1 of Pimsleur German. I do like the approach overall, but I think it could be better. For one, I wish there was some attempt to help with pronunciation. When you’ve been speaking one language all your life, it’s hard to say certain sounds, so a little pronunciation help would be beneficial. I also find myself wishing there were additional conversations that I could just listen to rather than participate in. Being able to listen to native speakers speaking to each other with just the words I know would be so helpful for learning to understand the language when spoken more quickly. With that said, the approach itself does produce results, so I can’t argue with success. I highly recommend the product.

I have completed all 5 levels of Pimsleur and I love it. I am going back and repeating them because I drive a lot and I can study while I'm driving. I wish there were more than 5 levels of Pimsleur Spanish. Do you have a recommendation as to another app similar to Pimsleur that I could continue on with? Also, do you know if Pimsleur will expand their Spanish beyond 5 levels?

Very helpful video. ❤Perhaps the best video to help me chose the Pimsleur method. However I don’t know if I should pay $575 outright or $21/month to learn Castilian Spanish. I’m probably at a level 2 (2.5) Spanish Latin American but want to learn Castilian Spanish as that is what I started learning when I was in grade school. I guess I should just get the 7-Day Free Trial. Just sharing my thoughts.

I used Pimmsleur to learn Spanish about 12 years ago using what they had at the time, which is only audio CDs. For me, it was a perfect way to start. I'd pop in a CD and listen to the 30-minute lesson on my commute to work. So I had the time and nobody to bother when speaking out loud (a very important aspect of the program). Overall, I like it and find that it will get you to a lower intermediate level if you complete the whole program. I agree that it's lacking on grammar. I was confused about several concepts (especially the conjunctive conjugations), and eventually took Spanish classes to clarify that. As part of the placement process, I had an interview with an instructor who told me that I spoke Spanish well (after also living in Latin America for a while) but did not always phrase things like a native speaker would. Learning grammar helped a lot. I think it's really necessary going from English to a Latin language since the grammar can be so different at times. So I recommend the course as a great initial exposure to the language, then supplemented with some form of grammar instruction to get to the mid- to high-intermediate or fluency level.

Pimsleur pretty much teaches how to speak and what is supposed to sound wrong when it's spoken without having to learn grammar. That means when it comes to reading and writing, you're pretty much level 0. I never had the app but did have the audios for all 5 levels. I'd use Google Translate to see how what I just heard is spelt and structured grammatically, and if there is any new vocab or hard to form sentences, I'd put those into Anki to review later. So basically making my own review cards. So in the end, listening, google translating and flashcard making with Anki would have my lessons longer by up to another 30 minutes, depending on how hard that unit was to really go through. But upside is I can read and write and I can visualize what I am about to say in French before I say it and not rely on creating the correct sounds to make a correct sentence

That's a really smart system. Good call!

Why do you want to learn Spanish? I’m a medical professional who wants so badly to be able to communicate with Spanish patients that come to my hospital. Because being able to communicate effectively is part of the healing process as well Also, while I can see a benefit for some people to ne able to multitask and do these lessons while simultaneously doing other activities, lol I don’t necessarily think that multitasking or being distracted for even one second while driving; for some drivers out there this probably not a good idea. They have enough problems concentrating on driving without being distracted

I learned with Pimsleur Spanish until Level 3 Lesson 15, then I stopped. Not that I didn't like, because I really did, but starting with level 3 they had some new voices, and some of them, mainly the male ones, speak too unclear. That matters mostly when new grammar is introduced. I just don't understand what they are saying. Yes, they want you to get used to native speakers, but they should repeat the grammatical construction in a clear voice. That was really frustrating for me, so I stopped. Now I'm learning with RS again (I have a life-time thing, but I wanted to try something new), and what I realised immediately is, how much more vocabulary I learn.
@jhchooo Жыл бұрын
I did the 5 units of Pimsleur and felt pretty confident... and then tried watching Spanish TV and came to the conclusion I understood about 20%. Just by reading body language you understand 10%. So it's useless as any other language app.
