Here's a demonstration on how to get rid of pesky pin feathers--
the new feather's coming in are itchy and painful for your bird...so here's some tips on how to properly remove them.

BEFORE ATTEMPTING: Please make sure to only do the above with WHITE quills, if the pin feather is dark/red...DONT TOUCH, (your bird could bleed which can be dangerous!) Again, only WHITE/EMPTY pin feathers are safe to pick. Thanks :)

@@piggyfiggy2167 Never pull pins out, only crumble between your fingers (like in the video.) Pulling pins out could hurt your bird as their blood runs through some feathers, (if pulled out they can bleed dangerous amounts.) Overall, getting rid of pins is best done only when safe and comfortable for you and your bird. Crumbling them is safe when they are WHITE/SEE THROUGH and not too hard to crumble. Overall If it is too difficult, they are better left alone :) Thank you for the question and good luck!

Another good way to preen your bird, if they have pin feathers that are ready and don't like your fingers or their feathers are too sensitive, is to spritz them with a bit of warm water to loosen up the pins and gently brush them with a clean mascara brush or toothbrush!

Also a tip for some people! Sometimes the pins are light grey at the top and darker at the bottom, try preening just the lighter part because the darker area is more likely to hurt them. I try to go for the lighter ones because the darker ones arent ready yet and will hurt and it hurts you just as much seeing them in pain or getting bit because of it.

I’m doing my research now because my poor fidget he’s a Quaker parrot has so many pin feathers on his head and I just know it has to be itchy for him . Aww yay, I hope it works for you! Sometimes they let you and sometimes they don’t, depending on their mood Haha. If not, giving them baths/misting them helps as well...Kiko likes to sit on the window by the shower to catch the steam😊

My black cap caique has the BIGGEST ones and they're ALL ready to come out but he's such a baby he won't let me go near them! Hi so I've a question In what direction do you "rub"? Towards the base of the feather & away, or side to side? Also how much pressure? I've a conure and I've just gained enough trust to do the feather ruffling, and he's several pin feathers that have accrued during the before-he-trusted point. I just tried to do it and feel so clumsy, and I'm pretty sure Tiko (my bird) thinks so too. I made sure to end the session on a good note, and I put him to bed on a good note, so if I can know how by tomorrow and do a successful session it would be super beneficial in reinforcing a new level of mutual trust Idk I'm babbling, and should be sleeping like Tiko is.

Hi Josh! Congrats on gaining your birds trust, that can be quite a process. Haha I should also be sleeping like my bird (Kiko.) But anyway I start as close to the base as my bird will let me, and gently crumble the pin feather upward, or towards myself. Hope that makes sense? I’m usually pretty gentle with it, it isn’t much harder to break than wax, so as long as you can see it break open it shouldn’t require much force. (The bird will let you know if they are sensitive by moving away or biting.) Main thing to be careful of is to make sure the quill is white and not dark, ie; filled with blood. Otherwise I’m sure you’ll get the hang of it! It just takes a bit of practice. Good luck :)

I also have a Green Cheek Conure but she is the only bird. She has a few tail pin feathers that she is unable to remove and they won't come off when I rub them. What would you suggest that I do?

Hey Rob, tail feathers are tough. I would probably let it resolve itself, as tail feathers have major blood vessels running through them, which can be dangerous to the bird if they are accidentally damaged. The pin feather should eventually come off on its own, and if not, green cheeks usually can reach their tail feathers to fix it themselves. Overall pin feathers are not a major issue, they’re just a little itchy to the bird as they go through the natural molting process. Although If there’s any major issue with it (bleeding, swelling, etc) I would take her to the vet. Oh you probably know this, but there is a white-looking feather above the tail that is permanent, (it’s an oil gland covering, not a pin feather.) hope this helps some!

It does! I usually try to help her by scratching most of the white off with my finger nail and if the bird is showing any pain or discomfort, I immediately stop and also, I see that the feather goes from white down to a dark colour, I'd assume that's the blood? I won't go near that. :) She just loves the extra help though, especially on the head.

My green cheeked is 7 months old, I got him from petco about 3 months ago and he will NOT let me touch him at all. He'll climb onto my hand when I pick him up, and he has no problem being on my shoulder or lap, and he does nuzzle against me a lot. However, as loving as he is, as soon as my fingers come anywhere near him when I'm not picking him up, he gets very mad. He bites me pretty hard and will not let me help him with his pin feathers. He's got so many right now that I worry. Any advice?

He sounds sweet! It sounds like he might just be afraid of hands, you never know how he was handled (if at all) at his petstore. Most PetSmart and Petco stores I know of don’t handle or tame their birds, unfortunately. Also, I wouldn’t worry much about tthe pin feathers right now, instead I would focus on gaining his trust and helping him overcome his fear of hands. It’s great that he’s stepping up for you! I would bribe him with treats in your hands and just be patient, slow, and gentle when your hands are near him. In theory, the more that he can expect good things when your hands are near, the more positively he’ll associate with hands. It might take some time for him to trust you but that’s part of the bonding experience, which is really cool (given the time and patience.) It’s always a work-and-progress and really up to the bird’s history and personality, but hopefully he will come around eventually! Oh and grooming requires a looot of trust considering they are prey and we are predators..hope that makes sense/helps! P.s. I have had my bird for almost five years now, sometimes he still doesn’t want to be pet or is bite-y. Parrots can be moody haha.

@@EverythingAnimalsCA Thanks for the advice! I gained a lot of progress with him just today. He likes to be in the shower with me a lot (I've got a nice sized walk-in type deal with a door so he has plenty of room to not be in the stream and just enjoy the mist). Today while we were in there together, I sat down with him and he just straight rubbed against my hand and let me touch him all over. He didn't care at all the I was using my fingers to scratch his head. Unfortunately, pins don't break when they're wet, so I tried again when we were out of the shower. He got pretty wet so he just sat on my knee preening for a while, and he continued to let me break the pins and touch his cute little head. However, and very confusingly, as soon as he way completely dry, he was back to biting me and getting really mad at my fingers. I'm not sure what the deal is with that, but at least I know now that I can make progress with him eventually. His name is Dorito, by the way lol

Anytime! I’m still learning to this day with my bird lol. aww that’s awesome that little Dorito made some progress! But Yeahh thats definitely confusing...maybe you caught him at a good time...every bird is different but it sounds like you have the patience to make it work! And don’t worry, there’s still some things Kiko won’t let me do. He only lets me touch his feet and chest sometimes and has NEVER let me touch under his wings. Birds are interesting little individuals.

You should only do so when it is easy to crumble between your fingers like wax. The pin feather should also be white, WITHOUT blood in it. If it is dark colored and hard, (it probably has blood in it,) which means you should NOT try to remove or your bird could bleed! Otherwise, if it is just hard to reach your bird should be fine without you removing it :) Hope that makes sense and good luck.

What do you do about tail feathers? My green cheek has pins on her tail and they are white and see though but she never seems to rub them off. Are they not yet fully developed?

My parrotlet had two pin feathers on the head very close to her eye.. i managed to preen the majority of them but i cant get to the base of it... the base still has this skin left... will preening most of it do? or is it absolute necessity to get it from the base?

I Know what you mean, those pins next to their beaks and eyes are tough to reach! If you can't get it all the way I'm sure that it will be fine. I think they resolve themselves eventually, (maybe your bird can sort of get it with his/her feet.)
