This is a more complete video on the opening of Pinan Godan. It has been previously published in two distinct videos. These have now been combined to give folks a more comprehensive video which shows both the core concepts and how they evolve slightly in different situations (ie the 8 step waza progression), all in a single video.

Hi Ryan! Great video completely agree with it's application. I think I was shown this with a slightly different position for the elbow wrench. I need to go back and take a look. Thanks!

If there's something I learned from doing wing chun it's that you can't move a punch from one side to the other, it will make contact before you finish As in, punch comes to the left side, doing a left hand soto-uke is not going to work, same for doing a right hand uchi-uke Then of course, doing a right hand soto-uke will leave you open to a second punch

This of course as long as you don't move to the side.

It wont work if starting from a *neutral* position. However, if one starts from the preemptive position shown it will work... in exactly the same way that "pak sau" will work on either the inside or outside of an opponent's punch. If you always assume a second punch is coming, you can "pre-position" the second hand to address the second punch. No matter which side it comes from. Punches rarely come *to* the left or right side, rather they generally come to the center *from* either the left or right side. If you don't understand what I am saying (or think you disagree) please post a video showing what you mean, and I will post a video showing my own perspective. I think this exchange or information could quite possibly benifit many people, so I encourage you to please take advantage of this opportunity.

Keep in mind I've only done one year of wing chun and come from karate so I'm probably overly opinionated I agree completely. The right footwork will make it work. Although here it's shown for another purpose kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKKVhaiLqLmNhbsm51s , these three lines are what I'm thinking of. In wing chun you have to maintain a distant enough range to use its center line theory like this first guy does kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6msmnyZoquCobc , but if you don't plan on doing it, I doubt it will work. A punch will generally come towards the center, but the closer the range it's thrown from, the less centered it becomes. So while in theory they say pak sau will work for either arm, to my advice if you're not at enough distance, you'll be doing little to that punch. Take naihanchi's middle section, you're managing these two outer lines, and only then attacking with the backfist. With a little body movement I think they fit quite nicely. I believe In white crane they also worked around these three lines, perhaps it's an aspect that was shared to many katas such as seisan

Please don't attempt to conflate what I teach with Japanese karate (IE your video of Japanese karate) or even a Shinbudo approach to truly Okinawan kata... I deliberately have separated what I teach from those approaches (which I characterize as "modern karate"). If you wish to compare my karate (ie what I call "old-style karate") with Wing-chun, please only ever use my videos. Moreover, please post your OWN videos of what *should* be done (ie videos of yourself doing techniques)... A great deal can be learned watching a person doing their own techniques regarding how much weight should be given to their opinions! If you aren't willing to post videos of yourself doing the "better" methods, and explaining why they are better (in contradistinction to specifically *my own vidoes* ), you are just an arm-chair quarterback, and/or somebody making grotesque straw-man arguments. So post your own video addressing the content of my video, or remain silent (or just acknowledge you aren't competent enough to actually show what you think is true... based entirely on things you can't demonstrate yourself).

It really doesn't get simpler: I post a video. You post a video of yourself in response. I post a video in counter-response. (and if your choose, you can continue the discussion by posting a another video). Everybody learns from such an exchange. Nobody can learn anything from posting examples of other people doing other things.
