If your seriously considering a machine, try out Pinball Arcade first on one of your newer consoles. It will give you a rundown of all the popular machines and let you get an idea of the theme, rule sets, and difficulty you might be looking for. Doesn't compare to the real thing though.

I also love the sound, look and feel of classic arcade machines so please do a video about that. Your channel is great, I think you are an awesome guy and you also have wonderful guests on your show. My favorite video is '2600 games that don' t suck' and maybe you can also do a video about the Colecovision once. That thing blew my mind when it came out in the early 80's. I'm in my mid-50's and grew up in the 1970's. That is with those electro-mechanical pinball machines, with the 'ting ting ting'. Some people prefer those to the later ones, because with those ones a player knew what to do, to play for. Wheras, with the later ones that isn't clear.

The sights and sounds of that one with the thumper in it really stuck in my mind. I think I also did the best on it. To me the biggest tech to come to pinball is LED lighting. As a game developer I think you'd be very interested in going behind the scenes to explore how these games came together particularly when they went solid state offering greater complexity. There are designers and programmers that are revered to this day for their accomplishments in bringing these games to fruition. To fully appreciate these games there is a steep learning curve to become proficient enough at ball handling to start to examine the rules of the game and appreciate the many nuances and modes in the code. As pinball evolved it got faster, we saw multi-level playfields and much more complex rules even though they were working largely in assembly! It evolved to entertain the already proficient players of the day. We've lost much of that proficiency within the masses but if you have the patients to learn these skills I think you will find the lost entertainment treasures that are locked within these games.

Also for the repair stuff I recommend looking at the line cord before plugging the pin in. I had a line cord that some one had cut and then spliced it back together I changed it out before I even plugged that in to much of a fire hazard. It was on a EM pin. And also checking the fuses. I do not know how many times I have found over fusing from 10A, 15A, 20A and even a 30A fuse. The solid states generally only use 8A max. The EMs however do use 10A, 15A but never exceed 15A. The manuals and or schematics should tell you the amps a fuse needs to be. And the 250V is fine just needs to be right Amps. There is also Fast Blow and Slow Blow fuses you have to be mindful of. Again the manual for the game should have that info in it. And some times on Solid States the fuse stuff will be on or near the boards.

It is really interesting to play the games on PS3 or PS4 first and then play the actual pinball machine. Both can be tons of fun, but the most helpful thing about the video games is they can help highlight the different achievements in the game and tell you what skill shots will bring about the most points. I also saw pinball machine Black Hole in the background towards the end of the video, that is also in the Williams Arcade for PS3 & PS4, that one is a bit of a mindbender and I would've love to have the chance to play it on a real machine one day! Sweet video! I just purchased my first pinball machine this winter. Its Data East's Laser War (1987), the styles are certainly dated but guess what, its part of what makes it cool and fun. Its a solid state game and I paid about $1,250 for it. Mr. Van Pelt is 100% correct about the dot matrix boards fetching a lot more money. At a minimum those games go for about $3,500 or more. Also, I'd say as smart tip for any person looking to purchase their first machine, if you know anyone close by who knows how these machines work have them check it out before you buy it. Think of it like having a mechanic friend test drive it, they'll be able to tell you what's wrong so you don't end up with some expensive repair off the bat. If you don't have someone you know with that sort of skillset, watch some KZbin clips on the game (I'd recommend some of the TNT Amusements vids) because they can give you a lot of helpful information on things to look out for repair and condition-wise. Buying a pinball machine has been great and no offense to video games, but I've seen young and old crowd around my pinball machine and play for hours. The instant response and the natural competitiveness of it just makes it fun and social. Thanks for this video, lots of great information!
