With the financial atmosphere you have shown the traditions of quilters making something out of what you have on hand. I picked up an unfinished quilt with a note in it, requesting to contact the person if I decided to finish the quilt. When I contacted the person was told the person who started the quilt is now in a nursing home and has forgotten most things of her life but she could still remember how to quilt. I offered to send the finished quilt to her family and she is thrilled. With all of this story I am finishing it in just the way you quilted your quilt. Quilts all have a story and a home. Thank you.

I feel that way too! All those specially things your made to feel like you must have before you can quilt, it kinda ruins it. I try to remember that once upon a time quilts were purposefull/utilitarian and may I add BEAUTIFUL before any of these fancy quilt things were invented, a time when quilting was nessecity not a "hobby" for more financially privileged individuals. If you want to quilt do it! You don't need all the best things money can buy. There are a lot of groups online where people love to help new sewists and who also love to get rid of fabric scraps! 😊 Also thrifting is a good way to not only help you get to quilting for the cheap but to help our environment. I have found some awesome rulers at garage sales for super cheap.

Call me 'not too bright' or whatever lol but this video FINALLY made me able to put my walking foot on my Bernina correctly! Literally all it took was that brief moment where you said "this is what most people do wrong" ( or something to that effect) it was EXACTLY the reason I was struggling. I'm not even going to embarrass myself by telling you how many years I've had the machine and the walking foot. At any rate , you gained a subscriber with just that one nugget of information that clicked so clearly with me , and I look forward to going back and watching all your videos. Just something I learned that makes rolling your quilt easier is use a dollar store pool noodle to roll up the sides of your quilt 😉

I have been quilting now for about 12 years and I'm still learning so so much, and I know I will continue to learn everyday on my quilting journey...but when I come across beautiful people such as your self it makes me so happy!! I too am a frugral quilter and try so hard to watch that I don't spend too much on fabric and other things I really don't need....I try to think back too all those women who started quilting over a hundred years ago and they made such beautiful works of art WITHOUT all the fancy tools they have today whic proves we don't necessarily need them right?!?! I just found your channel. I am 74 and a new quilter. Everything I have learned I have learned from KZbin. I have just made a two Jelly Roll quilts and one Baby Layer cake quilt. Your quilt was so beautiful. I use my Singer machine but I do struggle some when straight line quilting. I like the cross hatch design so much. I am going to try next quilt I do. Thank you !! I quilted for many years. Before long arms. I hand quilted and machine quilting was just becoming acceptable. But when my husband passed away many years ago, I had four children and the quilting was put aside. I focused on sewing, clothing, costumes, crafts. I finally took the leap and made a couple of quilt tops and was determined to quilt them and finish them. Lo and behold, I had forgotten how to machine Quilt on my domestic Sewing Machine. To me the first quilt was an absolute disaster and I started taking out all the quilting stitches. I could not figure out how I used to do this. I searched KZbin, Pinterest and any other format I could find to remind me how to accomplish machine quilting. you are the first quilt tutorial that focuses on how to quilt on your domestic machine! I am so thankful to have found your video to regain the confidence of making quilts again. Just FYI Nikki i tried to find a walking foot for my very old Phaff 360. It was my Moms machine and i now use this since she has passed. My father purchased this machine for my mom when I was three. I am now 62.. so I really wanted to learn how to machine Quilt, but I found out that that the Phaff has this built-in technology called IDT, and it does not require a walking foot to machine quilt. this machine actually has a built-in walking foot. This is not just for your channel but for viewers watching your channel to just to let them know.

Surprisingly, the most helpful part for me was when you explained what the seam guide was and how to use it! When I purchased my machine, I also purchased the walking foot and there was a seam guide in the box as well, but it wasn't identified or explained in the instructions, so I had no idea what it was. In fact, you're the only one I've ever seen using it, and I'm so glad you did! And I'm so glad I didn't throw it out! 😊 By the way, your daughter's quilt is beautiful! 🎉

My machine came with the walking foot, but not that seam guide. That would have been nice to have. I mark all my lines with a frixion pen, it's tedious and annoying to draw all those lines!

I have quilted all but one of my quilts with my own sewing machine. I enjoy the process of making my quilts from start to finish. Painters tape works great to establish straight lines.

I've been making quilts for a long time and have never machine quilted a big quilt. I've either hand quilted it, (I love hand quilting), made a QAYG quilt (which I enjoy doing), or sent it to a longarm quilter. I have an older machine that doesn't have a lot of room but you make it look and sound so easy. I'll have to try it sometime.

I just want to say "bravo". I appreciate how you pieced the backing, I have done that purposefully, it looks cute! Double quilt! . Also, what is even more amazing is that you use second-hand sheets for your backing. I thought I was the only one who did that! It's so cool that you have done that, too! I prefer to use sheets that I find at thrift stores for a few reasons...#1 it's WAY CHEAPER! I do make sure, of course, the sheet is 100% cotton and in good condition. I want it to last. I don't have a lot of money, and I really want to be less wasteful, so reusing and re-purposing is an awesome practice. Isn't that the point of a quilt to begin with. A useful item is made with what you have. The quilt I just finished, I actually used an old faux quilt blanket form probably to late 70s as batting. It was tatered worn fabric that was fake patch work with batting between the fabric layers. It was a blanket I always loved and was very worn out. I filled holes with scrap batting. Then my backing was a 100% cotton sheet I got at a thrift store, I will say the sheet was that nice cotton sateen, so very smooth and I found it to be a bit of a pain, so go for more crisp cotton sheets if you can find them. Thank you for sharing your quilting experience.

When quilting, I use gloves with those rubber dots on them. There's also special gloves you can buy that help your hands stick to your quilt. The gloves were a game changer and hand saver.

3:09 The thread brand you mentioned has "gone off" a bit. I mentioned the issues I was having with a sewing instructor person in a dedicated sewing goods store, and she said a lot of people, with newer/more recent models of domestic sewing machines, were having issues with tension and shredding of that brand (a different company had taken over the brand). So I bought a different brand of thread for my totally new sewing machine, and stopped having tension and shredding of thread issues. Just FYI. Thank you for the important info re. the walking foot especially.

Watched this, bought a walking foot, can’t wait to try it. I’ve made a dozen twin and smaller quilts using my regular foot, straight line, about 8” apart based on batting requirements. I didn’t know any better and it worked fine, but I’m anxious to get into more complicated patterns and I’m sure the walking foot will be a big help. Beautiful! As a new quilter, I THOUGHT I had to do things the way premier quilting videos taught quilting- clean cuts, 100% cotton, etc. I hate wasting fabric and batting, so I started piecing my batting a year on smaller projects- placemats, baby quilts…- and found no visible differences. I’m so content now. Although, it would be nice if manufacturers took quilting sizes into account when packaging. You do beautiful common sense quilting.❤
