Pine Squirrel Streamer

Detailed instructions for tying a Pine Squirrel Streamer.
Hook: 6X-long streamer hook (here a Lightning Strike ST5), size 4.
Thread: 6/0 or 140 Denier, brown-olive.
Tail Support: Craft foam, 1/4-inch strip of brown.
Tail and body: Pine-squirrel zonker strip, sculpin olive.

This pattern works I hooked a 5lds rainbow trout with it and it is an easy pattern to tie . It works try it out for your self. One of my most favorite patterns.

I've actually gone the opposite direction. I started tying these with a longish tail and was getting a ridiculous number of short bites especially after dark. Shortening the tail seemed to increase the number of hooked fish.

I'd get that zap a gap on my fingers...I always lose these types of streamers before they wear out. Foam post is a lot better than some solutions with hard mono that I've seen. Great tie.

Do you think there's any danger of the craft foam slowing the descent rate of the streamer by making it more buoyant? If so, is this problem more of an issue with sinking lines vs a weighted fly? Thanks for the great videos and patterns!

I don't think the foam is an issue, but you can also use a short loop of heavy monofilament rather than the foam to keep the tail from fouling. I fish this pattern almost exclusively after dark and greatly prefer it unweighted, no sink tip, no split shot and no weight added to the fly. Retrieving the fly with relatively slow, short (2-3 inch) strips, it stays just below the water's surface and has a ton of natural movement. Absolutely my favorite big fish fly and has been for years.

Are you fishing weighted streamers throughout the day (I noticed the wooly bugger is shown with a bead head), or are there any situations in which you would fish weighted streamers at night?

+William H Rabbit will work on larger hooks, the hair is generally too long and the hide too thick for anything smaller than about a size 8. Pine Squirrel also has really nice fine markings that I think add to the pattern.

It doesn't really matter, either will work fine. Color of foam should roughly match that of the Pine Squirrel.

+Michael Waugh I fish it on a 5wt all the time. You can probably use up to about a size 6 hook without too much of a problem.
