@vgamesx15 жыл бұрын
Well that isn't at all true, spending $55 or more for something else doesn't make a lot of sense unless you must have pci-e or something, but there are still some cheaper $15-$25 alternatives like orange pi or friendly arm boards which offer comparable performance (also friendly arm is one of the few who do have pretty good support), plus it entirely depends on the use case too, do you actually need really good support to make some project or do you simply need a functioning computer/internet to run some sort of low power server? For one example, check out the NanoPi R1, it's a mini board sbc with dual Ethernet (only one gigabit unfortunately and wifi which can run bare linux or OpenWRT and even includes a metal case for $30, now whether or not you think that sounds good, $30 for a little mini router is a fairly standard starting price for those sorts of devices, so IMO it including a metal case and easily able to be repurposed for something else makes it an awesome value.

@mPky1 Its not a zero sum game. There are other options in the market because there is demand there. It wins for you, but not for everyone. With the Pi 4 out, I see very little point in getting another rk3399 based sbc unless you are a hardcore sbc nerd. $80 plus international shipping is simply not competitive at all. The pcie slot is cool but not enough to justify the price and lack of community and software support.

Lack of PCIe/SATA is a huge pain in the arse with these budget SBCs. I've been trying to find a cheap, tiny board for almost 2 years to build a custom NAS. THAT IS a comment full of sense ; if the kernel and drivers work for the board, then ArchLinux can then compile all the modules you want for it provided you have the sourcecode. Stability is in the drivers of the hardware for a given kernel. If the hardware manufacturer makes good drivers available to the community, then the issues down the road are only for peoples who want "plug and play" systems, and are not ready to spend a very minimum amount of effort like telling their system during install "i want this and this and this and this, please compile it for my hardware and compile it while I get my tea/coffee"..

Thumbs up, but for reviewing an open source hardware board. The Rπ is the Microsoft of SBC's. Sure the Rπ may be easier for your grandmother to plug and play, but open source hardware is the future. The Rockchip has a datasheet, so the Linux kernel can support it as people develop the code and drivers. In fact anyone could do this. The Rπ has a broadcom chip with a locked datasheet. Only the Rπ foundation has the datasheet, and they have a binding legal non disclosure agreement that prevents them from sharing it with anyone. They make this deal with the devil so that no one else can purchase the broadcom chip used on the π. No one can build their own hardware with it unless they buy and integrate an entire Rπ which is entirely impractical. The only reason the Rπ has support is due to the Rπ foundation. This is exactly like Microsoft and products like Windows. It's a business strategy all about dominating the lion's share of the market with a sub standard product. In the long term, open source hardware will dominate. It's the better choice now and later. We, the average user, own the ability to do whatever we want with the product. We aren't at the mercy of the benevolent dictator corporation to grant us access.

I don’t know why people are over hype about the Pi. I can’t use it for anything, even SNES emulation is bad. The only use I have for it is as a NAS server or 3D printer server.

There's a BANA Pi that is supposedly a router board but should work as a NAS board. Problems are £100, 512GB DDR benefits are 4 ethernet ports and some other stuff I forget. ANd you can get a second hand Synology for £150 anyway.

@josephtremblant21734 жыл бұрын
@@igorpecovnik It's not. Slower for retro gaming maybe. A Rpi 4Gb or 8Gb will blow the XU4 off the water running any 64 bits linux distro like Ubuntu-mate 20.04, ubuntu desktop 20.04 LTS or Manjaro 20.08. XU4 has 2Gb of RAM only. XU4 was released in 2015. Rpi 4 was released on 2019. Times to move on. You want something faster than Rpi4 and reliable too to run Linux Desktop, try Odroid-N2+ and install official Ubuntu-Desktop 20.04 w/Gnome/Wayland and 5.8 kernel.
@igorpecovnik4 жыл бұрын
@@josephtremblant2173 LOL Perhaps you should check the date of my post? Things has been changed indeed. I also never used RPi nor Ubuntu or Manjaro. Time to move to Armbian on N2+ and other boards. Its the best support you can get/have. BTW. At the time of this post, 3D drivers (needed for Gnome and similar) are too unstable for Wayland (on N2 and RK3399). Also if you want something more versatile / better for serious usage, proper storage, get Nanopi T4 ... see SBC bench numbers to understand where proprietary video player without reliable storage called RPi can truly excel. If.
@igorpecovnik4 жыл бұрын
@@josephtremblant2173 And to not forget. SSD on RK3399 (which is also around 2.5y old now) can easily run 1 GBPS faster then on Rpi4 or about 3 - 4 times and its much much more reliable. This is another case, not Retrogaming. What about crypto acceleration? How fast it is on RPi 4? I indeed want something faster for Linux desktop which is why I use Ryzen 9 3950x and don't waste time with SBC for that kind of usage where memory speed is just a bit faster then a desktop ssd storage.

Gary, the RK339 processor is a big and little design. It work differently than an x86 hex core processor. Perhaps you could explain how the Big and Little system works. I am an x86 guy. The dual CPU nature of these ARM chips has not been well covered, to my knowledge. X86 CPus have single and multi-thread performance scores. The big and little ARM design adds light load and full load modes to this mix. The Raspberry Pi has avoided this issue, using only a single core type in each generation. This very x86 like, but it avoids the extremely low energy modes of the big and little design. Help please!

It isn't a script. I record this videos on my own and I subconsciously look at the flip out screen. It has got worse because people keep commenting about it, which makes me try harder to not do it, but you know the story, the more conscious I am of it the worse it gets.
