Pineapple Blocks with Square centers

Hello my quilting family! Today, I would love to show you how I make Pineapple blocks with a square center.
I made the pineapple block with 3 different strip sizes of 1.5 inch, 2.0 inch and 2.5 inch. And frankly, I think I'm in love with the 1.5 inch strip block!!!
The secret to the success of this block is in the first and second round of trimming that create those prefect 1/4 inch seams and lovely points. After those two rounds, you trim back from the sewn line of the strip.
If you are using 1.5 inch strips, trim the sewn strip back to 1.0 inches.
If you are using 2.0 inch strips, trim the sewn strip back to 1.5 inches.
If you are using 2.5 inch strips, trim the sewn strip back to 2.0 inches.
If you use the other edge of the strip instead of the sewn line, you may have some distortion once the block gets bigger. Remember to trim each round until the block is big enough for your project and in this case, I needed my block to finish at 12.5 inches square.

I'm going to follow up with this tutorial with using a 60 Degree Triangle, Diamond and Hexagon centers as well as using 1.5 inch, 2.0 inch and 2.5 inch strips.

Hi Arvetta! yes you can use different centers for pineapples. In that series, I had to trim them down to 12.5 inches square but if you continued with a triangle center (for example) you would just put them together like an over sized Hexi at the end. There are lots of methods on sewing pineapples but this is the way I was taught by my mom and grandmother. I've watched a couple of your episodes and see that you have bins of scraps. Do you color coordinate them into bins or do you just put a bin together as you plan a quilt? Thanks for all this info! Hi Lisa! I sort my scraps by color into Plastic shoe boxes. I put my crumbs and string together as I'm sewing other projects but when I'm working with my strings, I sort the string by color as well and I pull out all my crumbs and place in an empty Granola box. A lady at a quilt shop tried to sell me the pineapple lined fabric and I said no thanks, I was going to use my ruler - she very huffily said "good luck with THAT then!" So here's proof you can do it really well without! Um, I still haven't made the one I was going to, although I have done a pineapple before, fussy cut the finish triangles and it is on my mum's bed!

doing the block w 1 1/2" strips - if you start trimming at 1" you will end up w 3/4" logs?????

Thank you for your prompt reply. Had it in my head that since I was working with 1 1/2" strips the logs would be 1" but now I know 3/4" is okay

Hello Ruth! I make my scraps into quilts and then donate those quilts to charities so in a round about way, yes I donate my scraps to charity. A lot of the quilts that you see me make here on this channel are donated to a charity and I may make a quilt for myself or a family member and I'll state that it is not going to a charity.
