Auction KIA LIMP HOME: Idles at 1,700RPM!? ('12 Forte P0507-P0110-P0605)

This poor 2012 Kia Forte has been around the block...the Auction Block that is!
It starts and runs...but as soon as you start driving BOOM throttle response is lost and the ECM goes into LIMP-HOME Mode.
3 codes are set:
P0605 Internal Control Module Read Only Memory (ROM) Error
P2110 Throttle Actuator Control System - Forced Limited RPM
P0507 Idle Control System RPM - Higher Than Expected
Let's use scan data and logic to see why the ECM cannot reduce the idle speed below 1,700rpm...
But I forgot to bring one essential tool to complete this diagnosis: a SMOKE MACHINE!

Smoke machine for headlighrts leaks is over kill. 3psi air pressure and a sprayer bottle with soap will do it.

One thing about that plastic, it likely will only go through so many heat cycles. The 'ol Marquis had a plastic intake manifold that had a water passage. After about 38,000 miles (the car was just out of warranty) it exploded all over the alternator. Of course, we all know the fix was a METAL passage. That little smoke machine is just right; it produces enough smoke to diagnose leaks on a very windy day and is a manageable size. GREAT VIDEO!

Nice. I bought an Ancel S100 smoke machine for about $100. It does require battery and air hookup, but it works and paid for itself the first time it was used. Also, that is a great point about fuels trims with vacuum leak with MAP vs MAF.

This confirms a trend for me. I had a newer Subaru Ascent come in with a P0605 and it was being caused by a bad seal between the turbo and intercooler. Big enough boost leak that It sounded like a blow off valve stuck open. Seems the industry as a whole will react to massive intake leaks as a ROM error.

That little smoke machine actually fit nicely under the rear seat of the Suzuki, so I didn't have to rearrange any of my other tools in the trunk :)

Proper tools = proper diagnosis. Good Job Ivan... Just so you know another way to find a leak is to spray WD-40 and look for smoke coming out of the exhaust, or spray brake cleaner around the manifold and if the idle changes you know there is a leak. Just to spare you the 1 hour trip if you are ever caught in a similar situation without the smoke machines (Don't do the Brake Cleaner if the engine is at full operating temperature because depending where the Cat is, it can cause a fire)

Hey Ivan, on the phoenix plus, there actually is a hidden back button. Just swipe left starting from the very left edge of the screen. It works in all menus.

Squirting 2+2 carb cleaner around the manifold way before smoke machines were a thing found a lot of vacuum leaks back in the day😂

brake cleaner, propane/mapp gas, most anything flammable(not highly explosive!). even plain water you could hear being sucked in through leaks. a smoke machine would make it much easier on many small/well hidden leaks though.

That's sounds about right. The dealer put JB on the Transfer Case on my car to try and hide that they broke it when replacing cv axle.

Another weird one, Ivan! No less than a cracked intake manifold! And the little smoke machine actually delivered (you should get some manufacturer compensation, for this real-life validation). Just wondering if there was also something wrong with the alternator, once the burnt smell is never a good sign. Anyway, the Kia is back on the road, and that's a win 🙂

Next time you are in the Los Angeles area, you are welcome to look into my 89 GMC V1500 that has a high idle until the trans is put into drive and its warmed up. Starting from cold to full normal temp in park, the idle won't come down as it warms up but put it into D with the brakes on, the idle will slowly come down and then it will stay there until the key is cycled. Warmed up starts result in not as high an idle and will come down once in D but it will return with every cycle of the ignition, off/on. We set the default RPM with the IAC disconnected and still have the issue but if the idle screw is turned to a lower RPM, the problem gets corrected however, the idle then during operation seems to be way too low. Sound like an IAC or something dirty in its port with the EFI throttle body ? Seems like a simple fix but no one can. Original owner here, no aftermarket parts are used...bone stock vehicle. Thanks for your videos...many of them put active "mechanics" to shame, shame, shame.

My 89 had that problem, I replaced the iac. Problem solved. I did have to reset the the throttle position as a previous owner or shop had messed with everything but that actual cause.

@@boardhead888 My first experience with a high idle was the TBI/manifold gasket was pulled inward from vacuum. New gasket fixed it. Then the original OEM IAC was our focus but no OEM replacements were available. I keep looking but no bueno. Aftermarket is in there now. I might be able to get a Borg Warner IAC which could be a better replacement or a Delphi if I can find one. I won't waste money on other aftermarket electronics/sensors.

Ivan, since Launch scanners run on Android, I'm pretty sure if you just swipe in from the very edge of the screen (left or right side) that's your back gesture. Android has adapted gestures since 2018 but not every manufacturer enabled it so it's kind of confusing, but give that a try.

Hey Ivan, it looks like you've got the Topdon out for this video. I have a Topdon scanner as well and a year left on my "free" subscription for updates, but I haven't received any software updates for the past 6 months now. I used to get a couple of updates a week. Have you noticed a lack of updates on yours - or has anyone else? Topdon's support was entirely unhelpful and refused to confirm or deny whether any updates to any software packages (for the specific car brands that is) have been released in the past 6 months. My updates stopped when I filed a support request due to being unable to access the BCM on a 2008 Suzuki XL-7 via the Suzuki menus, but I can access it fine if I manually select the car as a 2007 Chevy Equinox. It feels like they blackflagged my account.

shake rattle and roll! doesn't sound like a spark/fuel misfire early in video, then with rpm's high and shaking, I say vacuum leak somewhere effecting one or two cylinder. now I'll watch past 5:27 and see. ** I was expecting a gross vacuum leak, but certainly not a cracked intake manifold!
