I had one of these 1.8T except an Avant. These cars had an external oil line that ran close to the exhaust and cooked the oil, causing the engine to completely sludge. Audi claimed the oil wasn't changed often enough, but did end up changing the recommendation to synthetic oil. Too late for many of us.

That 10 year sleep likely kept the car out of the crusher. If it ran after the swap it would have probably been driven to like 250k miles, a couple more owners, and crushed my now.

Great diagnostic, Ivan! Hand tightening nuts with the intention to go back and tighten everything, is a recipe for disaster - I've done the same mistake, more than once 🙂

As soon as I heard the relays clicking like crazy, I knew it was a bad ground connection. I once had a fairly new Odyssey that had body work done to the front bulkhead, where the dash lights, A/C, and other components were acting erratically. It turned out that the bulkhead had been spray painted, and even though the bulkhead ground wire was tight, it wasn't making a good connection due to the fresh paint. Cleaned the paint off of the area where the ground wire was attached, retightened, and was good to go.

Many years ago, when I was a young fella, a mechanic I worked for always used to say "if you put it on do it up!" I've followed that advice ever since, it's never let me down. If the car owner had used that strategy with the earth lug he'd never have had a problem.

I am fairly certain that fluid dripping down when you were sawzalling was in fact fuel, so it did probably manage to puncture the fuel tank.

Stuff happens , but 10 years to find the problem was a bit out there. I pulled one of those stunts on the last Volvo I did an engine swap on, but I found the problem in a half hour, didn’t hook up a connector under the battery box. Nice find Ivan. 👍👍🇺🇸

Usually the case with engine swaps, and sometimes wrong connectors on different model years. I can’t throw any stones, have done it myself , but I found it myself also. 👍

Whenever there is an issue with an engine swap and a starting/electrical issue it is wise to check all harness connections, especially ground integrity (remember the car that had the wrong harness for the engine?). Not surprised it was a ground issue! Sawzall to the rescue! 😆Good diag, Ivan!

Yep, an owner engine swap and visible, touchable ground wires loose means that there is a possibility of anything else being loose. Torque converter fasteners, driveshaft fasteners, engine accessory fasteners IE water pump, AC compressor, power steering pump etc. 1 trip down the driveway could lead to a large headache.

I have had old gas bend every pushrod on startup in a couple engines, I would swap out asap. I know this engine does not have pushrods but the valves get tight. Usually it fires and warms up, next morning bends them after cooling.

I'm ashamed to admit but I've done it myself drove myself crazy trying to figure it out and all it was was a loose engine block ground everything was freaking out wouldn't start off of the key it's easy to do my best suggestion is if you put a bolt in don't make it temporary and come back to it later because you will forget tighten it right then and there

This past summer I had a CPS failure. Prior to removing and replacing the CPS I disconnected the negative battery lead from the battery. I replaced the defective CPS and reconnected the negative battery lead. The engine ran fine after this repair. Then the cold weather came in December and the temperature dropped below 30 degrees. I had a no crank and ever thing was dead. The first thing that came to mind was a dead battery. I called AAA for a jump start. The technician arrived and he checked the positive and negative leads for a good contact. What he discovered was that the negative lead was loose. He tightened the connector and the engine started and ran fine. So, what happened? When I reconnected, the negative battery lead the temperature was above 100 degrees. When the problem occurred, the temperature had dropped down to 26 degrees. It is called expansion and contraction of the metal terminal connector. The cold contracted the negative lead so the ground was lost.

Once again, bad grounds. If people would realize that with automotive problems, they are always dealing with at most, 12 measly volts. One look at todays vehicles wiring diagrams would immediately tell them to check, add, or replace their ground straps. Ivan shpuld have disconnected the ground, wire wheeled it, and the firewall, reconnected it and fluid filmed it. I eould hsve removed the old gas and put new 93 octane in her and two cans of Berrymans B12. Damned good fix though Ivan. I would gladly contribute to a " Get Ivan a Bendpak" lift if he could have one.

Well boys, I had to condemn my future daughter-in-law's Mom's car yesterday. Driving one of those Kias and been having to dump oil in constantly. Been to the dealer for oil consumption problems repeatedly. Well that #4 cylinder bit the dust. Cylinder saturated with oil and zero on the compression gauge. 146k on it. They are getting ready to go rounds with Kia over it.

Are those cars rare in the US? In the UK that car would be worth $1000-$1500 fully working in reasonable condition. In the condition that one is in, it would be worth $100 scrap metal value, no one would bother fixing one that banged up if it's going to be barely worth $500 once it's running
