Let's dig a bit deeper and see why the camshaft TIMING is off on Bank 1, and if any parts will be required to perform the proper repair.

Nice work and confirmation. Something is definitely wrong if chain is going slack, even with no oil pressure. The hydraulic tensioner may have an internal spring or check valve internally that failed. Loss of oil pressure and/or contaminated oil may have created issue. Collapsed oil filter illustrates how bad things had gotten. An expensive mistake. Running contaminated oil (or not changing oil regularly) is a recipe for disaster on modern engines.

However, for those of us who have been watching you for a long time know you take on jobs no other diagnostician/mechanic would accept. Personally, I think the reason you take these unicorn jobs is twofold: 1) it is a challenge to you and I think you love a good challenge and 2) these non-conventional jobs are looked upon as a learning opportunity and you obviously thirst after increase in knowledge (even if it makes no sense to take some of these jobs from a business perspective) You defended taking on the Saab job by saying you will make the money up by all the other Saab jobs you will get. Blame the poor manufacturers shortsightedness. 2 things. 1. What is the oil pressure at cold startup and hot idle. 2. What is the oil pressure at 2000 RPM engine at normal operating temperature. Based on what numbers 1 and 2, I'd be telling the customer what's good and not good, plus let him know about the varnish coating in the engine from a lack of oil changes. Those gear teeth on the VVT actuators look worn down. The chain is stretched, and that tensioner either has a broken internal spring or a broken internal ratchet. That engine's way to noisy. I apologize for the negative review of this engine but I can hear the frustration in your voice and I sure don't want you to "own" this vehicle everytime there's a problem especially with the engine. You need to replace the cam phasers ability control valves which are the bolts to the phasers. Those are the same phaser that are on 3.6 pentastar engines and p0017 is a common failure with star case to replace mentioned parts. The failure is phaser lock pin sticking. Most commonly due to the condition of the oil as seen that gold color is a visual sign of moisture buildup in oil that normally vaprizes on long heat soak drive times such as highway driving. The moisture cause the oil to break down causing the plaque like buildup causing timing component operations to stick.

The tensioner would not have had oil pressure with the engine not running when he moved the chain... Loss of oil pressure from a plugged oil filter before the oil bypass valve opened might allow the timing chain to jump during that time... May sound stupid, but did they put the correct grade of oil in it? I have had issues with hydraulic lifters in the past when the wrong grade of oil was fitted, so just wondering how the wrong oil could potentially effect how a tensioner would work if it was adjusted by oil pressure alone. But somehow I think it's going to be something more than that, there must be some mechanical issue causing so much slack in that chain, if it were oil pressure alone creating the tension then surely there would always be a chance of the chain jumping when starting up. Going to be interesting to see what you find.

fixing both banks at once makes a lot of sense but nearly doubles cost. Soft non-ratcheting tensioners are a new German feature to save pennies in gas & rush failures. The tensioner guide-seal does get worned out... it leaks pressure and does need replacement. These Italian cars rely on German design 🤘

@@glasser2819 Being of German ancestry, German cars are THE WORST PILES TO OWN. I will stick with Toyota...the Japs can teach the square heads a great deal about good build quality. My 20 Tundra with the V8 sounds amazing even at idle...so.smooth and quiet.

Wow! that chain looks super sloppy, I'm surprised it didn't damage the engine. Surely there should have been a minimal tension to stop the chain jump at start up. Like i said earlier, lack of regular or any maintenance. Shame on the owner :-(

Even the ratchet type camchain tensioners on newer Honda motorcycles are known to go bad sometimes and cause ticking noises, some people swap to manual tensioners with threaded adjuster and a locknut.

Merry Christmas Ivan. As for the passenger side tensioner, maybe has a redesigned replacement. Possibly running low on oil pressure wore the tensioner plunger and plunge bore, allowing the plunger to move more freely (too much oil leaks through the larger worn tensioner) I can't imagine a tensioner without the fail safe feature of ratcheting. JUNK!

I know you were looking for a mechanical tension, I think that tensioner in there has just a spring for when you're just starting the car, once started it's hydraulic. At least that's how it was in my 2006 Ford Exploder, which exploded its timing because buying used I didn't know this major flaw of those engines and bought blind.

Nissan had a similar design, and an aftermarket solution was a limiting cap on the adjuster piston.

Right away it looks like the chain may have stretched more than the tensioner can make up, or the tensioner is leaking, and can't apply enough force. My guess is the chain, due to lack of oil.

You might want to hook up some kind of pressure tank with oil in it and put 25psi oil into the pressure sensor port. (I use a cheap A/C flush can with an air regulator on it) See if that chain tensioner is getting any oil at all. I would be concerned that some junk or filter media got pushed into a passage and flow is restricted to the right side chain. It would be a lot of work to find out that the bad tensioner is just a symptom, not the cause. Keep up the good fight!

Christmas present, Ivan! I wasn't expecting Part 2 this week 🙂 Really bad design - how easily you advanced the exhaust camshaft is worrisome. Stretched chain? Poor tensioner for the extra load on the exhaust camshaft? I recall a previous job where there was this load problem on a different car (can't remember which). This is going to be a time consuming (and probably exasperating) job. Wishing you the best of luck - skills and competence you got, but a little fairy dust wouldn't hurt 🙂

With a loose timing chain on the exhaust vale, always remove the timing chain tensioner for that bank and examine for internal destruction, clogged oil ports, etc. Chain tension on a DOHC engine is critical, obviously.
