Watching you work on these newer cars with all their plastic parts, and all the stuff you have to do to just change a simple part is CRAZY! I remember when nearly everything under the hood was metal and nearly everything hand room to work on it or remove it. I miss the old days, points condenser, with one coil, and nearly every spark plug was easy to get at without removing a bunch of plastic parts.

Funny thing about grounds. Driving home a few days ago and she stopped dead as a deck board. I had just replaced the battery not 30 min ago and I had no lights no crank no pump. Had it towed home, tinkered on it a few days and called a buddy whose a real mechanic and he suggested checking grounds, first one I tried sent sparks around my knuckle breaker. Cleaned it up and she’s back to running again.

The hassle you are going through is why I will never own another transverse engine vehicle. I had a 2008 Chrysler mini-van and while the short nose was helpful about 50K miles I started getting an intermittent check engine light for the EGR valve. My dealer quoted me over $500 to replace it, with most of the cost in labor. At the recommendation of a friend I called his trusted mechanic to get a quote. While I was on the phone he looked up the procedure to replace it. I heard over the phone "Oh, my god". That was all I needed to hear. I traded it off a few months later. But, thankfully, for the complex engines and vehicles of today we have the skilled mechanics like you.

When there may be a “hidden” bolt on a valve cover gasket, you can sometimes look at the new gasket and see the locations of the bolts. I have been reduced to counting the bolts and matching them to the new gasket locations 😀

One of us put the spark plug tube seals in upside down. You can see how the original ones are at 39:18 or so. You can see your inverted version at 42:18. Probably won't matter though as the oil just goes splashy splash inside and gravity just would keep it away from the top.

One BIG caveat about crap that gets into the oil pan; the oil pump is protected only by a coarse screen, and some pretty damaging things will go right through it. There's a fairly infamous issue that the screen doesn't prevent. Particularly when replacing a cylinder head with a rebuilt unit, the rebuilders typically use automated sandblasting or beadblasting equipment that leaves grit in secluded spots all over the head. They often do a pretty poor job of getting all of that grit out, so you have to make damn sure that you get *all* of it out of the oiled areas before you install the head. If you don't, that grit will go right past the screen, score the gears or rotors in the pump, and (most critically) they can jam the pressure relief valve plunger so that it no longer works. If it jams the valve open, there goes the oil pressure at low RPMs when hot; if it jams the valve closed, then the pressure goes sky high when the engine starts up cold, and can literally blow the filter right off the flange. I first ran into this while working for a VW dealer back in 1982 or 83, and I was the first to identify the cause of the issue which had already produced a number of failures in the field. There was even a silent recall within the parts system to pull the rebuilt water-cooled heads back for inspection and remedial cleaning. I've run into it a number of times since, with heads from a number of aftermarket suppliers. Bottom line: Paranoia about particulates getting into the crankcase is a good thing.

@helenault7452
@helenault7452 Жыл бұрын
@@djsi38t ".Pickup tube directly to the filter and then to the rest of the engine." Nope. Pickup tube, to the *oil pump*, which can be damaged by grit and abrasives. And before the oil gets to the filter, the engine has a pressure regulation valve (aka relief valve) that's often in the oil pump cover or housing, sometimes consisting of a spring-loaded soft steel piston in an aluminum bore, whose purpose is to keep the oil pressure from getting too high. It can also be a spring-loaded steel ball; that design is less susceptible to sticking. The valve regulates the engine's oil pressure by sending excess flow back to the oil pan. But the oil that goes through that valve is unfiltered; part of the reason for that valve's presence is to keep the filter from getting overpressurized. If the piston gets jammed closed, the oil filter can inflate and lift off the flange, blowing the seal out. If the relief valve is jammed open, you lose oil pressure when the engine is hot. Both of these are Bad Things. Note that this engine oil pressure relief valve or regulating valve is separate from the one in the oil filter. That one is present to make sure that some flow will get through the filter if the element gets clogged with crap because even dirty oil is better than none. The *engine* oil pressure relief valve is *BEFORE* the filter entirely.

The "You broke it, you bought it" thing tickled my brain, and brought out an old memory. When I was a kid my father told me of a man he had met. He had been among other things a circus artist and often would show off some trick or other from his days back in the circus. at the age of sixty he could still pull off some acrobatics most people never even will atempt. But that's really noththing with this particular story. He was one of those people who actually win big on a lottery. And in his case it was real big. So he stopped working, bought a Rolls Royce and kicked back. But he never behave "rich". He loved pulling up somewhere in his expensive car and step out in worn t-shirt and jeans. When he got older he took more and more notice of how people reacted to him depending on his clothes. So one day he was browsing through a store looking for a bedside lamp. An employee thought he looked like a vagrant and tried to get him to leave the store. This irritated him so instead he went for the most expensive looking crystal chandelier and asked what it cost. When the employee refused to tell him, saying only something like "To much for you" he took a swing at it with his cane making a mess out of it, turned to the man and just said, "Well it looks like I just bought it"... And yes, he died dirt poor, but he had fun getting there...

Ray, yes it is very, very important to block the intake. I have an interesting story about that subject. My son was working at a Mercedes dealership. He had just replaced the heads on a V12 Mercedes. The intake was installed on the engine, the intake at the throttle body was open. Naturally this was facing out toward the front. He was several feet from the car and was over at a vise. He was cutting something with a small flat faced cutting pliers, and the tip broke. It sounded like a 22 rifle when it broke. He searched for the tip, but didn't find it. It was on Saturday and he and I were the only people in the shop. We proceeded to button up the job, and fired the engine up. Ran fine, except for a random rapid ping. Shut the car down, and proceeded to remove bank 1 head. Found the tip of the pliers. How it made it past the intake valve, I have no idea. Why it didn't score the cylinder wall, I don't know. My son still has that small, but not tiny, piece of metal in the top drawer of his top tool box. Any time he opens anything on an engine, it get plugged up.

To keep dirt/dust out of the engine, I always use compressed air to blow it away from the valve cover sealing surfaces BEFORE removing the valve covers. Just use masking tape over the intake runners prior to blowing the dirt out.

I'd tell the customer that once a coil goes bad you'll immediately notice it, it won't go away, check engine light stays on, worse gas mileage, erratic shifting, weak acceleration that tends to show up when you need it to pass someone, and remote start won't work. So save up and change them together and don't worry about it for another 7 years. Also if your cheap like me, keep the back 3 coils and use them as replacements for the front 3.

42:08 not spark plug tubes, but several replacement oil seals that I have installed, where the manual calls for using an "appropriately sized socket" and plastic hammer ie: camshaft seals, front and rear main seals, and diff seals. I lightly lubricate the outer surface and press fit by hand. Never (knock on wood) had that fail. Erm... I think on a rear main I used a mallet to work it around actually. It's pretty large.

I'm glad you said not to do full send on spark plugs, I worked with a guy who watched a mechanic using a cordless impact taking plugs out and would use it to put them in. I tried to explain that he should not use the impact for installation of spark plugs for obvious reasons put was told I did not know what I was talking about. I just walked away and eventually he quit and after finding how much he actually forgot to do was lucky the vehicles he worked on did not have issues. He was leaving out safety pins on ball joint bolts, moving to fast and not re-check work. I quit the place and never looked back

Fun to do and much cheaper, (no offense). With the indicated milage, I would have bit the bullet and opted for new coil packs also. 26:58 IDK if that's fair. I worked at Walmart for a while. The shop was kept very clean, and we had a rigorous computer learning program that covered SOPs. When you got to the shop, it was customary to have a "mentor/trainer" to show you around the shop and where the tools and supplies are. But any deviation in procedures is not the fault of a "quick lube shop", that's an individual's work ethic and I can say I saw much worse at Hyundai. Even their equipment and oil jugs were mealy compared to Walmart. It might vary by location, but we were required to document the page number in "the book" that referenced our torque specs and oil filter. Every car that came in for tires LEGIT got the lug nuts checked by another member after a test spin in the parking lot. AND we had good times! 7'30 average time per tire. 11 minutes for an oil change, two cars at a time with a pit. I miss that job.

You didn't replace the rubber O ring seal for the pipe under the valve cover. That O ring allows oil pressure into the pipe and the pipe has holes to allow oil to lubricate the cam lobes. Should probably go back in there and replace those.

Wow, such a clean engine!! Glad to see a few people keep up with proper maintenance! Definitely a sight better than the stuff Eric at I Do Cars tears down.

In such a situation where the coils aren’t particularly cheap but are failure-prone so you preemptively replace the hard to reach ones, should you save the old coils to replace any of the easier to reach ones as they fail? Seems a good way to offset some of the expense.

Toyota coils are far from failure prone. I've never gotten less than 200k and up to 400k on the originals so YMMV.

When I worked for Toyota GB. they also owned Nippon Denso they always used their spark plugs. It was because they were a different resistance to all other makes.

Toyota's work best with exactly what came on them. I just did coils and plugs on two 2uz's. All Denzo coils and iridium plugs.(16 coils and plugs) Not cheap, but both sets of coils were 20+ years old and had over 250k on them.

One coil pack went out on my 5vz-fe at 300k miles. Replaced all three with autozone coil packs with lifetime warranty. Am now at 437k miles. Am just thankful the intake doesnt have to be removed to replace them.

I watch all your vids Ray and really enjoy them, as a retired mechanic/auto electrician I often wonder why when you remove corroded bolts why don't you put some lube on them when you replace them? Just wondered....

IMO no bolt is corroded enough to need lubrication,all these bolts were no where near what I would call corroded.
