@@jeffryblackmon4846 What is seen at 10:24 is super-crazy. All of this just for the small interface module for power windows, power mirrors, power locks and a few lights??? This was all accomplished for decades without a "coded" module that apparently is almost impossible to source even for a ten year old vehicle. One could only imagine every module in the car needs this type of 'coding'. As soon as some critical module becomes unavailable, an otherwise mechanically perfect vehicle becomes a brick and gets parted out at a wrecker. Cars like this will not be on the road when they are 20 to 25 years old, not so much due to mechanical issues, but due to electronics becoming *_unobtainium._*

The passager rear door module is probably connected to the the passager front to via a lin network and the passager front then talks over the can network. When i watched the first videos on this VW and you condemned the passager door module with out looking at any of it inputs, I thought you might have missed something.

This whole CAN system goes back to the days when car manufacturers wanted to reduce the number of wires in the car by using a computer style communication network. The principle is simple: power, ground, and communication wire to the module vs running wires for everything. What did we get instead, you guessed a communication network AND even more wires running through the vehicle, because now every module has to talk to every other module and now on different busses. Brilliant!
@int53185

@groosbro1
@groosbro1 Жыл бұрын
@@int53185 I've been in computer networking for a while and know how they work, but automotive networks have very different requirements. For one they have to be very robust because if an ethernet network goes down no one dies, a CAN bus failure at the wrong time can get someone killed, especially with the new breed of brake and drive by wire, but that's a different story. What I can't understand is why some cars have three networks, high, medium and low speed. I understand they communicate with different devices on the networks, you want the engine, brake/stability, and transmission on the high speed bus, but if they adopted networking principles from computers and used a form of ethernet for communication speed and bandwidth wouldn't have been an issue. I'm sure the devices and protocols could have been designed to be extremely robust with high redundancy, and even self diagnosing. A smart ethernet switch can sense a misbehaving device and shut down that port without affecting the rest of the network. I've seen modern car wire harnesses, I don't think the manufacturers reduced the use of copper that much, if at all.

In many makes and models of vehicles I have seen many similar problems that you are dealing with. I always look at the wiring from car body to door shell. The manufacturers love to skimp on wire. The result is broken wires in the loom. I've added length to so many broken wires to fix customer's issue. A few broken wires in there can cause so many problems. Your scanner telling you mirror short makes me wonder what it looks like in the loom. Internals of the mirror may also be compromised from weather. My fingers are crossed for you. Put a mirror on your shelf and keep your soldering iron warmed up just in case.

As commented in Part 1, I had the same problem on my Audi A6 4G. I also struggled why the heck does the backseat passenger door not operate when the passenger door module is not on power. I could then not even open the backseat door. The solution is simple but ridiculous. If you look at the wiring diagram you can see that the passenger door module has a separate communication line only going to the backseat door module. I.e. the back seat module has no CAN connection. Therefore the module gets all information (and only gets activated) by the passenger door module. Crazy isn't it...

Could the pulling of the fuse cause a “hard reset” in the module? Maybe the mirror fold mechanism being broke caused the module to continually stay awake because it was awaiting a signal from the folding mirrors telling the module “I’m folded in now fool”. Just a guess.

Why is the rear door have a no com? I looked everywhere in all data and factory manual there is no com wires to the rear door module. Why did the front module going down affect the rear. Even though they have separate power supplies and grounds. I believe the computer speaks to the rear doors through front door modules. Also rear windows worked just locks didn't. Its a right side left side drive global car, or at least the computer strategy is, the front doors modules have "slave" rear door modules, so you can have the master controls either on the left or right side front door, master control asks the passenger door module to command its rear door module. some of the lesser optioned cars only have one module per side, but they still control the right rear door with the right front door.

I'm going to take a guess but if it's like GM, the passenger rear door is controlled from the master switch thru the buss line thru the passenger front door module because the rear doors don't have modules. So when the passenger door module loses power you have no control over rear door. The drivers rear door is controlled by the drivers in turn like the passenger.

To me it is a bit strange that two modules asserts the same error. An ECU usually wakes up on external stimuli and the non-working folding mirrors is something that I would have looked into since I suspect they have feedback contacts indicating fully folded and fully extended. Even though the folding logic is disabled in the ECU there's a possibility that it can influence the ECU anyway. The difference between the driver door control switches and the local door switches also gives me a bit of an itch, but if they only were different with fuse removed then it's a bit less of a concern.

Clearly the door module is unable to handle high currents drawn by all door accessories, that's probably why it fails. As door window motors and mirror motors and other accessories get old and wear out, friction goes up and more electric power is needed to move the mechanisms, and that means more current draw. Power transistors and MOSFET drivers in the module are marginal and will faile if current exceed the ratings. The best preventative measure against module failure in future would be to replace tired actuator motors and thoroughly lubricate window and mirror mechanism with silicone grease for free movement to minimize excessive current draw

I wonder if the faulty mirror motors are the reason for the module failure. If the mirrors are not coded out and they're sending switched power to the motors (which are presumably brushed motors), a stall or another short will both cause excessive current draw and could damage some circuitry in the module if it isn't adequately overcurrent protected... there could even be a flyback voltage spike if the motor stalls, saturation current is reached, then mirror motor power switches off. That might be able to damage circuitry more easily than just a stall over-current. I'd say coding out the folding mirrors out is a good idea, or just unplug the mirror motors somehow.

You are the MAN Ivan! 05 corolla. What bidirectional scanner would you recommend? Is my car too slow for the Think Tool Pro?

For the Touareg this specific issue is an odd one because you’re likely getting an antenna issue DTC for a specific or all doors, but the reality is it’s actually a component in the Kessy module itself, and lock actuators are fine and throwing money away replacing them. Google Touareg Kessy.

Yep, sold the vw. Which was actually a shame. It was a awesome car minus the electrical issue.

Hey Ivan, are you sure that the shorted power folding mirror that is shorted to ground isn't causing that module to fail prematurely? Even if it isn't programmed to se it? Great troubleshooting as always!

I had a similar totally random parasitic draw on my father's ML. one night while walking past his car. I noticed a light inside. He was randomly leaving his GPS plugged in. Turns out the cigarette lighter stays powered with the keys removed and car locked.

Never really thought of that before, but I think this is common, because I have pumped up many tyres with the engine off and my pumps have been cigarette lighter powered.
