Btw, as SolarLight mentions in his Controller video, if you have a controller with a gyroscope and enable flick stick you can do a lot with just a controller. You aim precisely by moving your controller, and you can spin and flick using the right stick for example. Now you can avoid a lot of the simultaneous controller and keyboard input issues in some games. I think you can even enable this stuff directly through steam rather than the game having to support it.

It's very interesting to see this and the heights that you've taken it. Coming from the Space Sim and FPS background, I was at a weird crossroad when I started playing Star Citizen 3-4 years ago. I was so used to M+KB for everything, yet, I couldn't get the precise flight characteristics I wanted from that. Dual flightsticks was the norm, and while I loved the idea, it was pricey and not space efficient for my apartment. I also heard that some of the most skilled pvp pilots flew M+KB. But SC supported simultaneous input, and that's when I decided to use a mouse for aiming, but a flightstick for my other controls (HOSAM). It even has an analog thumb stick I have bound for walking in first person! The setup is so convenient, accessible, and yet potent I haven't thought about going dual stick. Initially I was skeptical of this game pad, considered it only for mmo type games, but seeing you take it to a new height with competitive shooters, well, now I'm very interested in it again.

Oh god I see what's going on with the Orbital Straif. In effect, it's just a regular airstraifing, but you're removing the middle man, which is the mouse, by using a Joystick instead of a Mouse. As the purpouse of turning the mouse is to produce that smooth gradual change in direction, like that of a *_Joystick_* , something the keyboard can't produce dues to being limited by 8 direction. With a Joystick, you natrually produce this smoothness, so the whole moving your mouse to airstraife is redundant, and like you showed, frees up your mouse to, you know, aim at the enemy gamer. Now you still need to pay atention to where you're moving to airstraif properly, the basic rules still apply even if you don't need the mouse anymore, so it's not like you can helicopter around and avoid all airshots, or spin the joystick around to acheive infinite speed, but the fact stands that you're going to have a leg up against those who doesn't have a Joystick + Mouse combo. Even without airstrafing there's a decent amount of advantage to having better mobility than Keyboard players.

Thanks for showcasing this, it caught my attention a while ago. Love the fact you're an actually good FPS player and showed the new advanced movement possibilities. Small correction on the "why controller input is considered inferior" section: In Apex in particular, most of the high-level movement techs rely on a game mechanic known as "lurch," which is only applied when using a keyboard for movement. Most movement techs are physically impossible to perform with an analogue stick, simply because the game behaves fundamentally differently when using analogue movement inputs as opposed to digital ones.
@pinguefyАй бұрын
roller players are sleeping on the foot pedals for mashing out W inputs,,
@pinguefyАй бұрын
is this really true though? how did the old movement configs work that roller players were using and how are some of them able to tap strafe with just a controller? i mention that it's a limitation of binds because i thought it was more about how it's physically not possible to input that many lurch inputs during the window without a scroll wheel or something similar, rather than the game handling analog input fundamentally differently
@sleeper564Ай бұрын
I don't know if all config users did this, but I know some would map their controller inputs to keyboard inputs and then use configs to do things like tap strafe or neo strafe.
@dylanharding5720Ай бұрын
Lurches *are* doable on controller, but you need a VERY fast flick. With this having bindable keys though... Lurch away.
@midknight1339Ай бұрын

You're correct. I've looked at this video for about 30 minutes to try to justify some of the things that are easily detectable, and while some of them you could say "sure maybe," there are clear cases where it's simply not human behavior. Especially given that there are comparators in the same video montage from game to game where natural aim is occurring and also that there are hand cams at times where the synchronization between the movements is completely desynced with what is happening in game. Not at a level that would be explainable through latency differences because "streaming" or whatever would cause the discrepancy.

Like W+A is 45 angle, but if you press W or A less, it will change the angle. Also the "analog movement speed change". Hope my weird sentence construction is not that hard to read.

i love seeing weird experimental playstyles, but this one really has so much potential, it's literally the best of both worlds while not having too much of a learning curve. also would love to see more people experiment with analog keyboards for controller-like inputs in specific games, i'd imagine thats more practical for many other games, as compared to an entirely new keypad (tho analog functionality with keyboards seem to be pretty controversial in competitive play? still think its rly cool) also welcome back after 2 years wow its been a while

This looks absolutely amazing! It reminds me of analog keyboards made before rapid trigger, where the main feature was allowing analog output by partially pushing a key. But this looks so much more intuitive, along with being much easier on your hand. The main question I have is how it works with games that dont support simultaneous kbm and controller input. Does it just revert to mapping the stick to output WASD? And what games are in that sick montage? Awesome to see another video from you!
@pinguefyАй бұрын
yeah unfortunately you have no choice but to map it to wasd :( i wouldn't use the azeron for games where you have to do that honestly, it's quite jarring. but i agree, wooting's analog is great but it's very hard to compete with how intuitive an analog stick is! in the fragvid: - diabotical (need a pug group) - xdefiant (shutting down soon) - diabotical rogue (paid closed beta, dead, devs trolling) - the finals - battlefield v (hard to find games on good maps in NA, easier on EU and very easy on APAC) - apex legends - black ops 6 - delta force - gundam evolution (unplayable, except for community revival project called Side 7) - tf2 - overwatch 2 - battlefield 2042 - cocaine diesel (need a pug group) - gunfire reborn

I recall trying to play L4D2 with an Xbox controller in my let hand and a mouse in my right eons ago. I didn't play a lot with this setup, as I did it as a proof of concept and that it was one of my first games I spent time on learning to play the 'superior and prolific m&kb'. I merely proved that my accuracy was the same as with a controller, but I was 20% faster with a mouse, and that you can change the controls in L4D2 to support mouse, keyboard, and controller simultaneously via a manually-edited .ini file. But this video is the natural evolution of the that rabbit hole I glanced down and didn't spend the time exploring, despite my desires. It kinda makes me regret not going ham on games I enjoyed to make that control scheme work. I might get that keyboard myself, now.

Very cool video, definitely not something I would have considered. I did want to say that in apex, there is a mechanic called lurching that is exclusive to MnK that allows for sharp directional changes in air that allows for tap strafing and a host of other lurch movement tech. Recently the developers made a change to the game wherein you are unable to lurch for (I think 1.5 seconds) after a controller input (analogue stick in this case) is detected, so you would not be able to tap strafe using your scroll wheel with it bound to +forward. It is one of the most fun movement mechanics for the amount of directional control it gives you in the air. I do think you've proven that the amount of other movement uses it has are undeniable, but it will have its own weird cost in apex specifically.
@pinguefyАй бұрын
sadly simultaneous input doesn't even work in apex to begin with. but that's rly interesting, i guess it's their strange answer to the movement configs that roller players were using

so glad to see your love of tf2 persists like it does for so many of us. if analog movement got more popular i wonder how it would change rocket/sticky jumping tech and jump maps. would be cool for the speedrunners to explore

i hope more people came and saw it, its truly an interesting subject since the major pc is keyboard input and its literally a rare/niche subject preference.
@isthisagoodyoutubehandleАй бұрын
The biggest advantage, imo, is being able to use all 4 of your other fingers for buttons without compromising your movement. Leaning with Q and E in milsim shooters is SO much more usable and intuitive when you don't have to do the awkward fat finger strafe to use it. Not to mention games that have driving in them are suddenly playable with a mouse and keyboard without any compromise. If you combine a foot pedal controller for analog trigger control, you've basically got a perfect one-size-fits all setup for literally anything other than flight sim games and games where you've gotta map controller to keyboard or via-versa because it'll only use one at a time.
