A previously unreleased interview from December 1971 of Pink Floyd at Studio Europa Sonor in France, is now available in full on KZbin for the first time. Only a few edits had to be made, consisting of cutting out some of the Live at Pompeii footage due to copyright. Big thanks to Adrian Maben and Cinémathèque Française for this release! You can find the original 52 minute video here: www.cinematheque.fr/henri/fil...
Notes:
In December 1971, Pink Floyd found themselves in the small Europa-Sonore studio in Paris to improve the quality of the multi-track mixing of the film Live at Pompeii, shot by Adrian Maben. With recording engineer Charles B. Raucher, they wanted to overdub music and sound effects on the original soundtrack. David Gilmour and Richard Wright doubled their voices for the song Echoes, part I and II, Roger Waters and Nick Mason remaining in the booth. From the eight tracks recorded at Pompeii, they obtained twenty-four.
This film is a portrait of the group as it was more than a year before the release of the album The Dark Side of the Moon. It bears witness to one of the most fruitful periods in its existence. The recording session was filmed with a Coutant camera on 16mm black and white reversal stock. The rushes were found again by the filmmaker and are now preserved at the Cinémathèque française. They have never been seen except for a ten-minute excerpt used in the director's cut of Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii. Adrian Maben goes back over this experience: "I succeeded in filming this session that bears witness to the extraordinary complicity that existed at the time between all the members of the group. They made fun of me, of journalists' clichés, the public, drugs and themselves. They were the kings of understatement, their dry humour was devastating, destabilizing and merciless. Especially that of Roger Waters. Richard Wright, more discreet, kept a bit apart from the others. Later on, he acquired the nickname 'The Quiet One'. It was a long day. To give themselves strength, they sent the 'roadie', Chris Adamson, out to buy a few dozen oysters and beer at the Brasserie Lorraine. Suddenly, the oyster feast became the epicentre of a hilarious, explosive conversation. They talked and talked: Pompeii, computers replacing musicians (or not), the arrival of David Gilmour after the departure of Syd, oysters crossing national borders, the Berlioz chorale, money and the astute methods they had invented to stop fighting! In short, there was a bit of everything and anything for a half-day of shooting. It must be understood that, at that time, Pink Floyd did not speak to the public, never gave interviews. For them, newspapers were devoid of interest, journalists were old and understood nothing about their music. Publicity was useless because their concerts were always sold out, word of mouth sufficing to fill the halls. This simple, amusing document is unique. The rushes did not require much editing and capture the inner spirit of the four-man band. All things considered, Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii could be shown after Chit Chat With Oysters, one being the counterpart of the other. Is this a film, a reportage or putting a disc into pictures? Forty years later, I still don't know."

I agree! It was a wonderful surprise seeing this appear publicly yesterday. This has only ever been shown at a handful of festivals and events Adrian Maben attended since 2013. The original 35mm amphitheater rushes were incinerated because the production company that financed the film went out of business but since the black and white 16mm stuff was recorded on Adrien Maben's personal camera the reels remained in his possession.

This is spectacular, I don't know where to begin! The new footage of Gilmour and Wright recording Echoes, that alone makes this so amazing! I suppose it was a given that Waters was in the booth while they were recording it, but I didn't know the extent to which he was producing their performance. This video warrants repeat viewing, no doubt, but the first impression I get is further confirmation that this band has little to no personal chemistry between them, it's truly amazing to think these people would be together for entire decade ahead, in this incarnation, during which they'd record some of the finest music in modern history.

Excellent! thank you! "Echoes" and "Live in Pompeji " Is my favourite Floyd Period. I first saw them live in 1970 where they drew heavily on songs from More, Umma Gumma (live side) and Atom Heart Mother. Apart from the brilliant playing and sound effects (Richard Wright with his azimuth coordinator) it was a joy to see the friendship of Gilmour ynx Waters on stage as they traded jokes etc... Some of that comes through with Waters toking.... Live in Pompeji remains one of the best concert films along with Monterey, Woodstock and Mad Dogs and Englishman, as I like stories to be interwoven with the music. As a pure live concert there's nothing better than AC/DC live at Donington: the incredible energy of both Singer and Angus doesn't let up for one second🎉❤

@grinsomore4000 Same here. I saw the About Face show in Chicago. (Recently came across the ticket stubs!) Then saw Roger in his Pros and Cons era. Very different approaches!!! I'm not a Roger hater, but I enjoyed Gilmour's show more. His guitar style IS the adrenaline in the music for me. Saw every PF show they put on in Chicago or Milwaukee after that, which was a lot of shows, sometimes two days in a row. The first Chicago show I saw (Momentary Laspe tour) they played Echoes. Then, as now, the part that I commented on above was the pinnacle of my entire lifetime of Floyd fandom!!! It gives me goosebumps thinking about it. I could go on & on. :-) As a bonus, Gilmour turns out to be a really decent human being too.

My Dad had just turned 16 a month before this special was recorded. I wouldn't be here for another 7 years and 4 months. It still trips me out seeing how things were back then. America was knee deep in Vietnam. Apollo 11 was two years behind us. The musical landscape would experience several monumental sea changes during this decade. And this particular band was on the cusp of a big turning point in their career. A turning point that would cement their legacy for all time.

I don't think so, their compositions aren't great, these guys have no future in music, they would do better to return to their studies to build large concrete ensembles and thus make themselves truly useful to society...

I've seen "Live at Pompeii" a long time ago, before I had access to the internet, before I learned about the various problems between them. The sure thing is that while David, Rick and Nick seemed very nice to me, I can't say the the same for Roger. Arrogant, with silly humor, trying to show that he is something more than what he really is. It is obvious that he does not hang with the others. At 47.04 you see how David looks at Roger in the control room that he plays the leader saying "we'll listen to it, we'll check it out" and then he takes out the earphones irritated and leaves. At 44.37 Rick says "things ansaid between us about how we feel about each other". After some years of patience leaves the band because of Waters. My personal opinion is that David changed PF with the harmony he brought to their music, the excellent guitar and voice but also the sweetness and beautiful aura he had, he also influenced Waters to he's getting better at what he did but he's too selfish to admit something like that. Roger felt threatened. That's why his stupid behavior. After all, I'm sure that without David we wouldn't have "dark side of the moon" "wish you were here" even "Wall" and all that great stuff in the after-Syd Barrett era. It goes without saying that I love and respect Rick and Nick as musicians and persons, the same as David but I'm sorry I can't say the same for Waters.

It's a double-edged sword, innit? SInce DSOTM and The Wall are Waters's ideas and concepts, we wouldn't have those albums without Roger introducing them to the rest of the band either. We'd have something different, but not that. And at this point it's unfathomable to not have that, it's all set in stone. And without Rick and Dave we wouldn't have the voices, the harmonies, the musicianship. Sum of the parts this band was rather than one guy responsible for everything. Shaky balance, but it worked for a while before Roger booted Rick in 1979, David and Nick in 1983, then tried to shut the whole thing down for good. That was his fatal mistake he since admitted to. Goes without saying we all wish they could continue. We'd get better albums than AMLOR and DB if they could keep the shaky balance for a few more years. Even David admitted the band lacked Roger's direction, especially during writing and recording AMLOR album.

are you telling me that this entire time the oysters footage and interview were cropped to hell and the actual framing of the shots themselves were somewhat normal?

Indeed. The Directors Cut of Live at Pompeii (with some of this footage) was all cropped to 16:9 (widescreen), when all of the footage was originally shot in 4:3. Hope that helps :)
