This is truly the key to this song: “The child has grown, the dream is gone. I have become comfortably numb.” You don't have to be a heroin addict to understand this lyric and empathize with it. In my opinion, the song is about loosing faith in childhood dreams, childhood expectations for the possible and the realization that most of us are mediocre and average, despite the endless possibilities we believe were there for us as children. We go to work, we pay the bills, we are trapped and just not realizing it that we've become comfortably numb and accepting our station in life despite our soul's depression.

Nope, Waters gave an interview where talks about this song specifically. He was ill and the company "doctor" gave him a shot of something to allow him to keep the concert on tract. This song is about that experience.

I’m a recovering addict. This song is the epitome of opiate addiction. I was constantly seeking oblivion. “Hello..is there anybody in there. Just nod if you can hear me..” what happens during an opiate overdose. As addicts we were seeking that comfortable, numb, feeling. We weren't raised this way. We are ashamed of our addiction, yet we continue to self sabotage. Such a sad, lonely, misunderstood place to be. At the lowest points in my addiction I had just come to terms with the fact that I was hopeless, helpless and on death’s door. I had made peace with it. The more I used, the more closed off and numb I became. I isolated myself, so I could die in peace and away from everyone who loved me. I was sick and tired, of being sick and tired. I was a horrible disappointment to all of them but I had no self control. “I had become comfortable numb” Grateful to be alive today. 10 years of sobriety. I have a daughter, a spouse and so much to live for. Every time I hear this song, tears stream down my face. It’s a reminder of how life used to be and how lucky I am to have escaped addiction’s filthy grip ❤️

@privatename36214 ай бұрын
And if you want to delve deeper, the reason the music is structure this way is because it is parallels the high or rush you get when taking drugs that make you feel a brief ecstasy, only to be dropped down again in dispair. They do it quite effectively in this song. This is why Pink Floyd's music goes way deeper than many people realize.

Totally agree, I have the same reaction with Dream Theater. "The Spirit Carries On" is a classic example. I am a drummer, I have played in various flavors of metal bands throughout my life, I have MANY influences, including Rush, Yes, Dream Theater, Genesis, Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, Black Sabbath/Ozzy, and of course Pink Floyd., and the list could go on and on. I always value something that I hear, that touches my heart and soul in a meaningful way. Sometimes I hear a song, and read the lyrics and wonder, why didn't I write that? I tend to be the one that writes lyrics in whatever band I might find myself in. Not so much these days, 66 years old, looking to move to Central America to escape the American political insanity, perhaps rejoin a musical community on the other end. Maybe a bit of a "reboot" of my life. I don't really feel all that "old", just matured like a vintage wine, maybe ready to be enjoyed again.

I was a teenager in the 70's and we would listen to Pink Floyd along with others like Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull etc at parties on Friday and Saturday nights with SNL on the tv with the sound off, all smoking weed, which was the norm in the 60's and 70's. It was very relaxing and fun with all your friends there chatting with the music so loud that you could barely hear each other but you could feel the music clear through your bones and it was amazing. Unfortunately, we all have to grow up and those days have been gone for me since I graduated in 1976. I still do enjoy their music very much.

This song is masterpiece on many levels, but David Gilmour’s guitar solos are so poignantly and heart-wrenchingly beautiful they are truly beyond words. Regarding the lyrics, I always related most to "When I was a child I had a fleeting glimpse... the child is grown, the dream is gone." As child I used to get sort of delirious when I would get a fever. I would see and hear fleeting apparitions that I couldn't explain. And I've always felt those bouts of illness were emblematic of childhood in general. There are ways we see the world when we're young that are beautifully inexplicable. And that naive mystical point of view is nearly impossible to recapture as an adult. Many artists search for it their entire careers. Personally, I search and long for the complete euphoria I used to experience listening to music back when it all felt so magical and new. I know so much music now and I can't help but relate one piece to another, trace the genealogy, analyze the forms. But rarely, for a fleeting moment, I'll hear something that transports me back to that sense of childlike wonder and awe. Apart from my wonderful child, there is nothing more I live for in life than that.

It's amazing to read your comment today and that this video randomly popped up in my KZbin listings. (First time on this channel). Just two days ago my wife (musician, violin and vocalist) our great friend (musician, Lead Guitarist) and myself (vocalist, Guitar and Percussionist) were having a conversation on how it's so different listening to music now as to when we were just discovering music. How even though we still love music it's looked at from us so differently now. Now pretty much it's all analyzed, broken down into equations and mastering. We no longer hear, feel and flow with just the magic of the song. We now concentrate on the science and in doing so loose a lot to the experience, splendor and imagination. So I asked the question to them is there any groups or songs that still turn on the Magic when you hear them? The fist words out of our mouths "in unison" was "Pink Floyd" followed by a small handful of other songs and performers.

The line where he says " when I was a child I caught a fever, my hands felt like two balloons" takes me back 30 years to when my little boy had a severe fever and I remember him saying his hands seemed as big as balloons as he was lay in bed with a really high fever. I am Japanese. There once was a legendary Professional Shogi player in Japan named Satoshi Murayama. He suffered from nephrotic disease when he was a child and had frequent high fevers. At that time, It seems that his hands, feet, and face were all swollen up, just like this song. He endured the fear that he might be next, witnessing over and over again the death of other incurable children in the hospital room. He could hardly move, so he learned Shogi on his own in the hospital room. His parents knew very little about Shogi, but they provided him with everything he wanted. He put all his energy into Shogi, and he became so strong soon that even adults could not beat him, and eventually he became a professional and one of the top players. But around that time, he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and died at the age of 29 as a top player of the top 11 A-ranked players. It was only after his death that many people knew about his difficult upbringing and his illness. It came as a surprise and shock to people all over country, and it was made into a manga and a movie. It seems that he loved to listen to "Pink Floyd", "Boston" and etc... I also think of him when I listen to this song.

"Did you guys just get instantly happier?" - it could be an intentional rollercoaster... the verses are in Bm which can be considered a "dark" key, leading to a very up-lifting chorus that happens to be in D major, a much more "positive" key... The orchestra and harmonies definitely add to it, making you feel as if you're floating. The choruses are played on something called a high strung guitar which includes an open 9th - so very happy sounding... behind it all you have the orchestra playing these descending "scales" in different octaves, that add motion. Beautiful song

@@williammartin5569 not at all. The entire album is about the walls that we build around ourselves to prevent us from being hurt, mentally or physically. In the song, the Dr.'s administer the numbing pain meds to get the character, Pink through his performance.. He is utterly along in his mind.
@JTheTeach3 жыл бұрын
i don't feel that. I see it as his attempt to express how he has dealt with his pain by numbing with drugs, and his pain is rooted in a sense of lost hope, and now he is comfortable only in his numbness.

@@JimPark-63 I love that your the only one who had the right explanation and everybody else just made their own assumptions that had nothing to do with the character Pink, and the wall built around him. You need more likes haha

The Wall. Listen to it in its ENTIRETY. It's an emotional journey. Most of Pink Floyd albums are a story. All of their songs are above the rest, but if you listen to the songs on the albums in chronological order... you realize they are EPIC. You are part of the story. You FEEL it.

Yeah is between this or back street boys haha. You are so right, the 60, 70 and even 80 created so of the best music ever but I will say kids these days do their research and many of them know about Bowie, Floyd, the Doors and so much more ground breaking music from days gone by.
@Blarney77-ef2wp4 жыл бұрын
My kids listened to it with me. They gained and understanding that great and amazing music was written before they were born and it's really silly to write it off just cuz it's older than they are. But many do. I grew up with rock and roll (I'm 60) and have been disappointed with the quality of music over the last 20 or so years. Older bands stuck together and play for decades because they are not just a group of players. They are a special FAMILY, they know how to interact musically on a level that casual players never experience. It's why the Stones, Aerosmith, ZZ Top, Rush, and so many others are still around. Pink Floyd was founded in the crazy mid 1960s and if they were all still alive they'd still be playing. Gilmour and Waters still do. LISTEN to the older rock. Give it a chance!

If we play it for them and explain why David Gilmore does this in this song, why did Keith Emerson use the Moog 17 and why does Greg Lake have one of the best voices in rock, do they like LOTR? Turn them on to Led Zeppelin's "Ramble on", or "Misty Mountain Hop" or Pink Floyd's music in 2001 :A Space Odyssey. To appreciate our 60s, 70s music they need to hear. I'm 50 and listen to Mozart or Vivaldi's 4 seasons especially "Winter". Love the music from the 40' too.
