It's called a "lap steel" guitar it kind of sits down like a keyboard yet you play it like a guitar with a glass or a steel slide on one hand. That's what gives it that really smooth sound. He uses it in this concert in another song you simply have to watch to believe called "One Of These Days"! There really isn't a bad song on this entire concert!!
@ryanwolcott44643 жыл бұрын
I was about to add that too. If you're looking for a guitar player who did play on their lap check out Jeff Healey. He learned to play that way sure to blindness from a cancer of his eyes he had before the age of 1. He was a great blues musician.

Yup a Lap Steel guitar,.... or Steel Guitar. Gilmour used a couple of different Lap Steel guitars with Pink Floyd, Fender being one, but his Jedson Lap Steel was a favorite of his and that's the one you see here at the Pulse Concerts. I think you're really starting to understand just how special a band Pink Floyd is/was, and David Gilmour by extension. He's a tremendously talented guitarist and musician, his style is unique and instantly recognized by PF fans. He plays the guitar with such passion, feel and emotion, his inventiveness and phrasing show a certain purposefulness, that is not seen in very many guitarists. When Pink Floyd stopped being Pink Floyd, David Gilmour continued on and toured playing Pink Floyd songs as a solo artist with a backing band. David Gilmour has continued to perform as recently as 2016 with the release of his 4th and last solo album, "Rattle That Lock". Today David Gilmour is 75 years old. There are some great videos from the 2006 "Live at Gdansk" concert, and some 2016 performances out there too. Also check out some videos when they were in their mid 20's, like their 1971 "Echoes Live at Pompeii",....there's another Pink Floyd live performance Pompeii in 2016. It was billed as,... "David Gilmour Returns to Pompeii after 45 Years"

This track is basically a recap of their career as a band, and a final tribute to their founder, Syd Barrett (RIP). The statue at the end is a rendition of SYD in the early days. It is the perfect closing cut on their final studio album, summing up the nearly 25 years since their inception.

@cr10001 Жыл бұрын
David was playing a six-string acoustic guitar at first, then at 6:17 you can see he sits down at the pedal steel. Right at the very end you can hear him revert to the acoustic. The pedal steel is a development of slide guitar, which is a 'normal' guitar but played with a 'slide' or a 'steel'. This developed into a 'lap steel' which sits on the player's lap, then it grew legs and a stand and pedals like a keyboard instrument. (You can Google for pics). I love the unique sound it makes, and the ability to slide continuously between notes, which David makes the most of in this track.

Good thing to remember - these musicians are veterans of the psychedelic era (many would suggest they pretty much manifested it) - their music and lyrical poetry are first and foremost dream-images, however much immediate literal sense they make, or stories they may “tell”. You can’t lose by just letting it wash over you, and letting the subconscious images form. No need to over-analyze what any of it’s “about” - it’s about sounds, images, and human imagination, and it’s never been more needed than now, in this sadly superficial, short-attentioned little age we’re passing through now.

Yeah, man- you said 3 for 3... make that about 500 for 500. It was the acoustic that David played at first, but he switched to the Jedson Console Steel guitar, which is the lap steel, securely mounted. But next up should be One of These Days followed by Coming Back to Life then Run Like Hell. And top off a guitar sonic bliss night with Gilmour visiting another band for Marooned. Have life-saving refreshments handy- you gonna need 'em.

Subscribed. There's a lot more to this journey. You haven't even heard anything from their Dark Side of the Moon album yet. That album has spent more than 950 weeks on the charts. When I graduated high school in 1984, it had been on the charts continuously since its release in 1973. For those songs, I'd suggest studio versions of Time (with lyrics) first, then Great Gig in the Sky, which immediately follows (it's a concept album).
