I've been homeless. I've felt the shame. My best friend and I made a commitment to support each other. We lifted ourselves out of the streets and now rent a house in a small community in Oregon. We're both 62 and totally care about the homeless around us

Been there, too, man. It's been a long road to where I am now. Times have changed, there are more paths out of the weeds. Know your local homeless services, better yet, volunteer some time and donate what you can realistically share. Remember that you don't help anyone by joining them in their misery, only by helping them out of their own. The dignity of work goes farther than a handout.

A good, compassionate reaction, Maddy. The first step when dealing with a homeless person is to gain his/her trust----and that may not be an easy thing to accomplish. If it is accomplished (usually by really listening and showing respect), then one can offer referrals to local agencies which can ease the person's plight. Offering free nutritious food is also very helpful. If everyone who has housing did this a couple times a week, I think the homeless crisis in America would be greatly alleviated. But of course, the big question this great Pink Floyd song asks is: "is it only a dream that there'll be no more turning away?"

You nailed the meaning. Sad thing is this song is nearly 40 years old and if anything, the problem has only gotten worse.

Doubtful there would be a Pink Floyd at all if there was no Waters. Just cause he's an asshole doesn't mean his contribution to the band wasn't amazing.

Every new generation has to learn these same lessons, and only a few from each generation actually take it to heart and do something to help. This is just the unending state of our world in "this current evil age," as the apostle Paul said. 💖💖💖

As usual, no matter how good the studio version, the live version of pink floyd is better. David gets every bit of emotion with each note. Every band member is a master musician. This came out in 1987, so times are infinitely worse for the homeless. We are still turning away. As David sings, it is still a dream.

lately there has been some questionable opportunists. myself living a couple paychecks from a bad situation I have to pick and chose who I feel is actually needy and hungry beyond their means. I live in a beach town where many end up on the streets, lots from out of town, and I have many times I've been burned encountering repeated offenders who actually make a good living on Acting down and trodden as they walk to their cars and condos after a good day's begging. The moral of the story is be careful who you hand money you barely can spare. If you have deep pockets, we'll give anyways regardless I guess. Either way Karma will be the true equalizer in the long run.

I have loved the song since always but your comments were moving, delivery got me for a sec, got a little juicy eyed! Hit home, so to speak.😛 It’s not for me to judge why someone may be homeless, just help.👍🏼👍🏼✌🏼✌🏼
@ToddSauve
@ToddSauve Ай бұрын
Well, there is no real help if a person won't stop taking drugs or being an alcoholic, should that be the reason they are homeless. They are killing themselves in slow motion and you are not helping them if you give them money. Sometimes people have to hit the ground and bounce before they will change. It is painful for people who know this to have to say no to helping someone until they choose to change. All you can do is steer them to a place or program where they can find the help to stop. 😟😢💖🤷‍♂
@ScottM-mds1hb
@ScottM-mds1hb Ай бұрын
@@ToddSauve I get it. Say in general, I’ve probably seen the same types of homeless people you have, and it’s easy to see people just asking for money for drugs etc. Help isn’t always just hand out money. Drinking and drugs to that degree is escaping from something, and they still need help, whether they know it or even want it at the moment. The help someone gives could be a reason to someday try and find a way out of that. How many talented or skilled or just good people remain out there undiscovered with emotional baggage and drink themselves silly? Addicts come from all walks of life, but it still remains a life. differing opinions doesn’t mean one or the other is right or wrong. I always appreciate the discussions…the song is great and might mean something different to everyone 😎🤘🏼✌🏼👍🏼

The problem with the homeless issues is one cannot fix it on your own. If you invite a homeless person into your home it can be very dangerous. Most of these people have mental heath and drug addiction issues, so they need specialist care. Often you see videos on u tube from America where some guy drives up and offers an homeless person a job, when that person does not turn up, it proves to the guy offering the job, homeless people do not want to help themselves. Would you go to a "job" offered by stranger, you do not know? No way it could be as set up and the guy doing this is clearly got an agenda. Also it does not take into account people with illnesses etc. Sure buy people stuff, give them some food and little bit of money. just treat them as people who are not invisible, not take them to your home though.
