B-side of the single Apples and Oranges (1967); Composition: Richard Wright
This is a promotional film for this song, shot for Belgian television on February 18 or 19, 1968, in which the band mimes to the song on a bridge in Brussels. Although Syd Barrett was still a member of the band when the song was recorded (October 1967), the film was shot after his departure and features David Gilmour on guitar, in his first appearance on film with Pink Floyd.The Atomium monument can be seen in the background as the band plays. Is it just me, or do all of Rick's songs have an almost nostalgic, melancholy feel to them? Even the more light-hearted ones like Summer '68 feel introspective.

I remember listening to this song in the late 60's on a 45 vinyl played on our portable record player. It is an absolute classic and thank goodness for computers as now I can see the videos at last. Well we did not see them in my youth on the TV. Hope that no-one minds someone nearing 60 years of age sharing her experiences with the youth of today. Good to see that early Pink Floyd has not been forgotten.

One of Pink Floyd's best early songs, Rick Wright's ethereal vocals and Nick Mason's drumming are amazing. One of the tracks, along with "Remember A Day" that that really stood out on their "Relics" compilation, and both sung by Rick Wright.

One of the reasons why I love Pink Floyd as much as I do is that their style is always changing, while still feeling familiar, and it's always beautiful. I haven't heard a song by Pink Floyd I didn't like yet, and I can't really ever get "bored" of the band, seeing as all I have to do is switch albums and I've got a different side of Floyd, and besides that, they'll always be a favorite of mine.

+R Kline I think that its not al true. Syd and Richard was the integrant of the band that give to th world a new perspective of improvisation. Syd make a lot of noises and Richard put the harmony, Nick and Waters only make fun. I think that the style f the clothes (that it´s the topic) it´s probably cause of the time; if yu see the first cncert in UFO you will see that i said to you, all is indian strambotic, and psycodelic, but of course, Syd was the psycodelic boy at a the times.

+John García González they were all in it syd and Rick were the smartest ones Rick's the only one out of all 5 that went to music school then syd left Roger took over and then David so all 3 led the band even tho Roger wasn't there when Dave was leader. and you've gotta have fun people in the band IDK if thats what ide say Roger and nicks part in the band was Nick was the only one who never quit the band but my hole point was Nick and Roger just aint there for the fun. and at this point in time Jim Morrison was really popular to him and syd took a picture together which they would have to syd was kind of like a different English version of Jim they were both smart as hell both poets Jim of course was alot more wild but you get the point

Frankly, I think this is a better song than its A-side, Syd Barrett's "Apples and Oranges". But Syd was still their star songwriter at the time, so his song was chosen. When a Richard Wright composition was chosen for the A-side of their next single, it was the trite "It Would Be So Nice" (AKA "The Embarrassment of Rich's")! Cheers to both composers.

Rosie Beattie, as someone in their 60s, I've no objections whatsoever in sharing impressions of this gorgeous, possibly overlooked Floyd track - it's always reminded me of rainy English afternoons and yes, there's a certain melancholy to Rick Wright's songs. I'm belatedly appreciating his contributions to this seminal band. Rick, you're not forgotten.

When Roger decided he was Pink Floyd (prior to The Wall) and then treated the band like backup players (The Final Cut) it was over. Roger's ego killed Floyd. Perhaps it was little man's disease? Pretty much everyone knew that David's guitar and Wrights keyboard made the Floyd sound.

*Richard Freakin' Wright!!! Am I right??? Or am I Wright?!?! I always try to trumpet keyboardist Richard Wright's songwriting contributions to Floyd! His songs always seemed to really stand out for me and often times become my favorites on the album. Definitely the unsung and somewhat underestimated talent in the group. "Saucerful of Secrets", the album featuring Wright as the primary songwriter is one of the all time greatest albums in mine and Floyd drummer Nick Mason's opinion. Wright was the one who originally seemed to step up and try to fill the huge void left when the late great Syd Barrett unfortunately contracted a terrible case of the "bat-shit-craziness" disease, and Wright did extremely well in smoothing over such a wide transitional gap between writing styles of Barrett into Waters. Its a shame that Richard, with his poetically metaphorical and desriptively complex songs and music about easily relatable ideas, sort of got pushed to the background by Water's very powerfully evocative and dreamlike lyrics. All in all though, the Floyd is a Super-Group in which each member is an invaluable part of a larger machine that is Pink Floyd! Remove one cog and the machine no longer works...aka everything after "Final Cut". !!!!!I love this video!!!

Allan Carroll Good analysis. I think Rick's personality had a lot to do with it; he was shy and not at all self-promoting. Also, I think that's a large part of why Rick got pushed aside by Roger: it was more personality, at first, Roger being an extremely dominant personality type, and Rick being so opposite that. Eventually, though, Roger's Type-A personality translated into actual songwriting dominance, through sheer force of will. At that point, Rick purposely faded even more into the background... a fact that led to his ouster from the band by the time "The Wall" came out.
@psychedelicpiper999
@psychedelicpiper999 9 жыл бұрын
I agree about Rick, but Syd wasn't crazy. He was just under pressure from the industry, and it was affecting how he lived, and the circumstancs he found himself in. I don't doubt he had many episodes, but I don't believe that being an introvert and suffering from social anxiety and confidence equates to bat-shit-craziness. He did 2 solo albums I highly recommend checking out. Rick played keyboard on Syd's second solo album, and David Gilmour played some of the other instruments, as well as produced. "Dominoes" may as well have been a Pink Floyd track, Rick's organ is a central instrument to that song. And my top 2 favorite Rick songs are the ones Syd happened to play on, "Remember A Day" and "Paintbox". I feel if Syd had remained in the group, and without Waters' ego eventually dominating, Rick could have flourished more as a songwriter, David could still stay, and we'd get the best of all worlds.

+Nibb9 Thanks a lot for that! I had an idle evening and decided to find the location of the “Paintbox” film using Street View. At the beginning of the Paintbox clip, you can triangulate between Gilmour, the church steeple and the Atomium, and the location is put into the Ossegempark. I couldn’t find the location after the search (the nearest location was the viewing point), but it seems this structure was removed after 1968. I am now more convinced that the “Emily Play” and “Paintbox” structures are one and the same…..cheers.
@SuperNevile
@SuperNevile 8 жыл бұрын
+Nibb9 Yes, the bridge seems to be the Overpass, a double elevated walkway at the end of the “Passerelle” . The beginning of the Overpass, seems to be the viewing point in the Ossegempark at the end of the Avenue De La Passerelle. The rest of the Overpass has been removed. I now think "Paintbox" was filmed on the Overpass, and "Emily Play" under the Overpass in the adjacent Parc de Laeken (the vehicles are at the roundabout on Avenue Gros Tilleul). There isn’t much on the net about the Overpass, just a few photos. Ahhhhh... Final proof!! Google ~ “Pink Floyd, Brussels 1968 - 88 Gallery” and there they are setting up their kit on the overpass! Nick photographing the photographer. Road below underpass must be Avenue du Gros Tilluel…..Bye..... I'll leave it at that …cheers
