This may not be their best song. I know Roger calls it a failure. But I remember when I discovered it on a Pink Floyd rarities bootleg, I was pretty blown away. I had all their albums at that point, and wondered where it came from and why it wasn't available. It had the early Floyd sound,.and the guitar riff was pretty heavy. Its an interesting song from their past, that's for sure.

“The first song they wrote was ‘Point Me At The Sky’, which was not a success but nevertheless it was the start of them working together. When it came out, they asked Storm and I to make a film. We went to Biggin Hill and rented a couple of Tiger Moths. Everybody took turns to fly in them while we were shooting with a couple of old Bolexes and an Arriflex 16mm camera. It was all Biggles and jolly hockey sticks. That’s a very middle class, public schoolboys fun day out. Five Go Mad At Biggin Hill.” www.uncut.co.uk/features/interview-david-gilmour-99501/4/

A Waters song. Oh so whimsical, in the style of Traffic's Hole in My Shoe. Wasn't life so much simpler and innocent in those days! But even Floyd weren't immune from modern life's negativity. Yes, the same Waters 15 years laters was responsible for the minus Rick Wright Pink Floyds Final Cut... A pretty depressing experience. So these images of Rick to me are doubly poignant 😢

This has a brilliant naivety. They needed a single so they wrote this, it's got a chorus and a sing along section. You can tell its the product of architecture students as opposed to art students. I personally find the post Barrett pre Dark Side era my favourite. This, Set the Controls, Echoes, Grantchester Meadows, Green is the Colour, Cirrus Minor, Cymbaline, Fearless, Julia Dream... to name but a few songs from this era I absolutely adore.

After his horrible Take Up Thy Stethoscope this was the first decent song Waters wrote. And what a beauty. I only recently found out that the flute is "just" a Mellotron! From their early single B-sides it is this and Rick Wright's Paint Box, and even It Would Be So Nice, I absolutely treasure. It took me 50 years to get rid of my dislike for Barrett's jerky Apples And Oranges with its tedious vocals. PF, thou art forgiven!

@@willemvandeursen3105 Richard Wright really got some great sounds out of the Mellotron (Julia Dream, A Saucerful of Secrets, See-Saw, Atom Heart Mother). The shame was that he didn't like Mellotrons very much, he was more into the organ for that early PF sound, and so by 1970 he wasn't using Mellotrons anymore. Part of that may have had to do with the fact that Mellotrons were difficult to tour with and hard to keep in tune (Robert Fripp had a famous saying, "tuning a Mellotron doesn't").
@willemvandeursen3105
@willemvandeursen3105 Жыл бұрын
@@russellmurray3964, In 1975 Genesis - sans Gabriel - still used the mellotron, and for solo parts in the instrumental cues the Moog Synth. It's still my favorite Collins/Genesis album. The Mellotron had a unique magical sound (what I fondly call the musical vacuum cleaner). We can't blame musicians for switching to Moog, yes, it was easier to handle. But when Sinead O'Connor's Nothing Compares To You came out in 1993, I rejoiced-- the Mellotron! Later I realized it was just a synthesizer with a mellotron-esque soundscape. Fortunately the Mello has been used extensively between 1967-1972. I can say, I have all the records that feature a Mellotron! (and bought Emerson Lake & Palmer's Lucky Man single because of the fantastic MOOG solo haha) At that time I also had the first sensational Walter Carlos albums. And the extremely catchy hit single 'Popcorn'! Well, you just can't stop progress...

The Floyd made me contemplate the thought and politics behind their music.. I wish they were still rocking today like they were with live in Pompeii.. Rip Syd Barrett.. Rip Richard Wright.. David Gilmour genius on guitar .. Nick mason what a drummer.. Roger Waters genius and driving force right up to his departure... Roger I love the Wall... I relate to loss ! I would venture that the main reason this track flopped upon release was that it was a Sgt. Pepper's-type bit of English psychedelia released in late 1968, about 6-7 months after the expiry date of this particular type of track. As great as it is (one of my Floyd faves), the music scene at that time was evolving rapidly (by this time, the hard "acid-rock" track Inna-Gadda-Da-Vida was a big thing) and it didn't wait up for any stragglers. Some tracks came out too early for major success (The Who's I Can See For Miles being a prime example), while others such as this one were in the "too late" category.

The chorus is pure Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Especially the high harmony. [Edit: typos]

I like this! Shame it wasn't a hit. Maybe the intro is too long....not immediate enough. But the chorus is great, and the outro is fantastic!

Probably the most unoriginal Floyd song. I'm glad they stopped doing singles. Roger's part is ok though. He shouts well.

I've never noticed until now that the opening line of this single ("Hey Eugene...") corresponds with its b-side title "Careful With That Axe Eugene". So, Floyd experts... who was Eugene?

I wonder if this is where Gilmour and Mason discovered their passion for flying? Last I heard, a bi-plane was the only one Gilmour kept from Intrepid Aviation when he sold the company.

I don’t know why but this song doesn’t really sound like most of Pink Floyd’s other songs. It sounds more like 1960s pop music.
