There is no doubt that he was a genius and that his whimsical legacy and talent for experimentation informed so much of what Roger, Rick, Nick and Dave achieved in the years following his departure, and of course he created the name of the band itself. Having said that all remaining four members did bring something uniquely significant and valuable to the music they produced post-Syd. For example, Roger's lyrics, conceptual imagination and sheer drive would likely never have come to the fore in a Syd-dominated group. Imagine also, there would never have been a single David Gilmour guitar solo in their entire work. I think Rick's and Nick's contribution would have been much the same although, Echoes might never have seen the light of day. My own view for what it's worth is that there would have been no Pink Floyd without Syd, but also none of the utterly transcendental work the other four produced without him.
