The whole album is the story of life, from birth to death. Each song has it's point. Great Gig in the Sky, the vocalist was told to tell the 5 stages of grief without any words, denial, anger, bargaining, depression acceptance. Best to just go with the flow and listen to the whole album straight through (after smoking a joint).

I bought this when it first came out and must have listened to it 200 times, but it still seems fresh, and the lyrics take on greater meaning with the passing years (it's what you bring to it). With a spliff & a scotch or just a nice cup of tea, it works magic every time. They had no electronic synths, no auto-tune, just 4 track & 16 track tape recorders and analogue synths, but the production quality is amazing.

the song brain damage sounds like the singer is going crazy because it’s actually about their former lead singer Syd Barrett who had to be dropped from the band in 1968 because he developed schizophrenia and/or psychosis that was likely caused by his drug use, they made a bunch of songs about him and their album Wish You Were Here is basically about him

Around 1970 on, Pink Floyd dropped a string of S-tier albums: *Meddle, Dark Side, Animals, Wish You Were Here* and *The Wall* . All hit - wonderfully! :) PS Dark Side is a loop. The end of Side 2 is the start of Side 1... PPS this is prog rock. It didn't die out, but mutated into softer and heavier variants. Yo man, I'm probably around your age and discovered Pink Floyd 2 years ago. Yeah, Pink Floyd is "not many words" sounds like "what the fuck" this is their kind of rock, psychedelic rock. Weird constellations of instruments, ups, and downs. Pink floyd is one of a kind and you really have to enjoy their music, otherwise it will sound like an earache . In my opinion, it is the well-known album, by its cover but not the best album, musically. All PF albums are concept albums so you should listen from first to last song, like you did with this one. I would recommend you the album "wish you were here" 5 songs, intro and outro songs are "hugging" the 3 songs in between. Beautiful album. And a beautiful reaction from you, bro. Reno, when you said they aren't normal I would agree with you. I first heard this album when it was released in the 70s. I thought then and still think that this isn't "music" in the traditional sense. I've now come to understand that Pink Floyd was identified by a 6th density being who gave them the music and lyrics. As to why, I can only think its purpose is to play a part in the transitioning of our world from 3rd to 4th density. (I'd place another song, more traditional, in this realm also: Stairway To Heaven) Peace brother.

In this album, each song represents a different stage of life. Speak to me, it's all the sounds you hear while in the womb. Life going on outside which are bits and pieces of all the songs on this album. Breathe (in the Air) this song is about the 1st breaths you take when you're born and your toddler years. On the Run is about your teen years, after school when all you have time to do is work and you're always on the run. Time is when you start to realize that you're not going to live forever and what are you going to do with your life. Great Gig in the Sky. This one is about experiencing the death of a loved one, likely a parent. Money is about your biggest earning years and your dash to make a stash. Us and Them is the clashing of generations between the young and the old. Any Color You Like is your retirement years, you're done working and you've saved enough money to have it any color you like, whatever that may be. Brain Damage. You're old now and starting to get dementia, your brain is damaged and you're not the same person you used to be. You're losing yourself. Eclipse. This is it. Your own life is coming to an end. Everything you've ever seen, felt, or heard is soon to be gone forever, what's on the other side? Darkness or a new heartbeat, and that's what the album begins and ends with, a heartbeat.

This album is 51 years old. The first intro starts with a heartbeat, followed by a build up to birth( the screaming) . “Breath” is the first breath of life. “ on the run” is about how busy life is. The sounds at the time were state of the art. No computers to makes these sounds. A lot of splicing and taping. Leading into “ time” . The words in this song get more profound the older you become. IMO one of the best songs ever made. This song is about how fast life goes, and how you need to start living in the moment.This is followed by “ the great gig in the sky” about the different stages of death. "Live for today, gone tomorrow" reminds me of Johnny Somali and his landing in jail in South Korea, like hitting a brick wall. In Brain Damage, it's a reference to Syd Barrett who used to be in the band but left it as he lost his sanity. Pink Floyd did full albums about psychiatric patients and tragedy.

The first side of the album Speak to me to great gig in the sky covers life, birth to death. Beginning with your first breath, you aready have begun your journey to death. Starting with money ( Materialism) , Us and them ( have and have nots, class and race struggles) , any color you like is an instrumental, Brain damage ( life drives some people crazy) , Eclipse has lyrics the cover all aspects of life. Well, that's my interpretation of 50 years, and probably 500 times I've listened to this album. In closing, this album stayed on the billboard top 200 for over 20 years with many years at or near the top.

Definitely in my top 5 along with abbey Road, (I know, sgt peppers lonely heart club is more regarded as such but I personally prefer abbey Road), and I’m undecided on the other 3! DSOTM is just an amazing feet of musicianship, artistic creativity, beyond its time and still sounds as fresh as ever today. It’s thought provoking, it’s got groove, experimentalism, classical elements, story telling, just everything all perfectly put together and with that gorgeous harmony in eclipse bringing it all to such a satisfying close. An unforgettable trip of a lifetime that you have at a push of a button or a tap of a screen🩷🎶 how lucky are we eh?! It’s no surprise this album stayed on the billboard charts for 14 YEARS!! The longest time any album has remained there to this day. Oh and btw, re great gig in the sky, it’s about the stages of acceptance of death. So resistance then acceptance, then finally peace. Hi, dude. Imagine yourself, at 12 or 13 years old, listening to this stuff... And spending your puberty, adolescence and youth, like us (those of us who are already grey or have lost our hair) accompanied by these monsters: Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Genesis, Jethro Tull, King Krimson, Laurie Anderson, Gentle Giant, Premiata Forneria Marconi, Sui Generis, Espíritu, Aquelarre, Led Zeppelin, Van der Graaf Generator, Spinetta, Deep Purple and hundreds more... We old people grew up with the bar set too high, maybe that's why it's hard for us today to find something that satisfies us, gives us the fullness and pleasure of that music, that has that complexity, that depth, that experimentalism and creativity. I know that there are quality bands today, but you have to look for them with a magnifying glass, the market is very stingy, but in those years it was a little more generous with quality art (just a little). Luckily there is KZbin, luckily for you that you can find out what your parents and grandparents listened to, and luckily for us that we can investigate what is being made today and what the record companies and radio stations don't offer us. I'm glad that this has excited you and I invite you to browse through some of that small sample that I mentioned, KZbin has the "Related" section, and that will take you to a prehistoric universe (hahaha) but very substantial. Money has a difficult time signature. 7/8 time. It changes into 4/4 time for she guitar solo and back into 7/8 time. Take anything (keys/any of the 4 or 5 guitars out of the mix and its song wouldn’t work. Crazy GREAT!!!

You missed the point of the Great Gig in the Sky as well as Speak to Me. The first track is literally birth, you are born into a world and your infancy is essentially a collection of things you cannot possibly understand. The Great Gig in the Sky is quite literally a soul going through the stages of grief upon dying: Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.
