I, a former East-German Sailor, spent a three month time 1983 in the Riyeka shipyard (named "Victor Lenac"), former Yugoslavia. Found this incredible album in a music shop, bought it from small money i had in my wallet. Smuggled it against all the policy and law of GDR-Customs. Happily still have it ! It was the best investment in music I ever did in my life !!! - nothing else to say...

It's certainly not my least favourite, there's some fantastic stuff on here - The Gunner's Dream and Two Suns in the Sunset are standout. And let's face it the worst of Pink Floyd is still going to be better than most other stuff anyway, but at times this really does feel like Spare Bricks and a bit of a B side project (which IIRC was the original intention anyway). I have to go with DG's assessment which was if the songs weren't good enough for the double album The Wall, why would they be good enough for a new EP a few years later? Still like to give it a listen every now and then regardless.

@Jody B Some tracks were out takes from the Wall. I'm not in a position to say if Roger left them out on purpose with another album in mind because that would be Genius on top of Genius. A lot of so called Floyd fans dont rate it probably haven't even listened the Gilmour groupies because he said he hated it . It should be classed as a waters solo album if he hated it so much. Guess he wasnt happy the places where a guitar solo Could have fitted Roger put saxophone in. Arr poor Dave.

I was lucky to live in a generation of incredible musical richness and variety of bands and styles, which included the 70s and 80s, plus what was already there from the 60s, and the 90s, which were not bad at all. My life was incredibly better thanks to all those geniuses who were great allies and fellow travelers. Today I see that several are dying, and I feel very nostalgic for the good times shared, but above all I am enormously grateful for having been a contemporary of all of them. Greetings to all from Argentina.

Southampton Dock They disembarked in forty-five And no one spoke and no one smiled There were too many spaces in the line They gathered at the cenotaph All agreed with hand on heart To sheath the sacrificial knifes But now She stands upon Southampton Dock With her handkerchief And her summer frock Clings to her wet body in the rain In quiet desperation Knuckles white upon the slippery reins She bravely waves the boys goodbye again And still the dark stain spreads between their shoulder blades A mute reminder of the poppy fields and graves And when the fight was over We spent what they had made But In the bottom of our hearts We felt the final cut The Final Cut Through the fish-eyed lens of tear-stained eyes I can barely define the shape of this moment in time And far from flying high in clear blue skies I'm spiralling down to the hole in the ground where I hide If you negotiate the minefield in the drive And beat the dogs and cheat the cold electronic eyes And if you make it past the shotguns in the hall Dial the combination Open the priesthole And if I'm in I'll tell you what's behind the wall There's a kid who had a big hallucination Making love to girls in magazines He wonders if you're sleeping with your new found faith Could anybody love him Or is it just a crazy dream And if I show you my dark side Will you still hold me tonight? And if I open my heart to you And show you my weak side What would you do? Would you sell your story to Rolling Stone? Would you take the children away And leave me alone? And smile in reassurance As you whisper down the phone? Would you send me packing . . . or would you take me home? Thought I oughta bare my naked feelings Thought I oughta tear the curtain down I've held the blade in trembling hands Prepared to make it but Just then the phone rang I never had the nerve to make the final cut Not Now John Fuck all that, we've got to get on with these (Fuck all that) (Fuck all that) Got to compete with the wily Japanese There's too many home fires burning and not enough trees (Fuck all that) So fuck all that, we've got to get on with these (Got to get on with these) can't stop lose job mind gone silicon what bomb get away pay day make hay break down need fix big six clickity click hold on oh no brrrrrrrrrring bingo! Rick is sorely missed here in my opinion. And I feel as if Roger was so sad here, this album is just too depressing for me. But wow what great lyrical content, I just wish the music reached as high of a level as it did with Rick doing what he did best.
@stickman1742
@stickman1742 2 ай бұрын
I think the sadness is evident. All I know is this album is great. Rick really stopped contributing a lot around the mid 70s. His choice, he's admitted he wasn't bringing songs to Floyd. He did put out his solo album. Marginal album at best, but there was some nice stuff on there that could have contributed to Floyd songs. Don't know if Roger wouldn't work with him or if Rick just wanted his own album. He always complained he didn't get enough of his own songs on Floyd albums, but they were all voted on democratically. Ricky can't blame Roger for that, Wright just didn't have that many good songs. He admitted he wasn't prolific. Only Roger had that in the group.

I was 16 years old when this album was released. I didn't think much of it. Now, after 40 years, I am beginning to appreciate just what a master work it is. Forty years after WW II, and what did some of our world governments learn about waging wars in the shadow of nuclear weapons? It's perfectly o.k. If nukes get tossed, it's YOUR side that will loose. OUR side will win. This album called them out. No one wins when "the rusty wire that holds the cord that keeps the anger in gives way". Now here we are, another 40 years gone by and the same crowd are at it again. I hope more people discover/ re-discover this album, and call out that crowd again. So that maybe we can make it another 40 years with out two suns in our sun set.

The Final Cut. That Rusty Wire is all that's between us and oblivion. Two Suns in the Sunset . The Falklands War . Maggie took her cruisers one day . On and on it goes . More relevant today as when it was released. Enjoy It .

Definitely in my top three Floyd albums. I honestly believe some of Gilmour's best playing was on this album, he was angry and frustrated with Roger at the time, and it showed in his solos - and I love it. He's never sounded quite like that again.

We hopefully don’t stay angry all our lives.but I’ll defend Dave’s chops by saying he is still a beast.surely you’ve heard his solos work on the intro to”remember that night “ or the sound check at Pompeii’s “in any tongue”. The Ol boy rips! Enjoy.

I agree . My Mum absolutely loved this album in particular because of the lyrics you mentioned She seen this happen during WW2 so it brought her up n down but smiled after the song ended . Its very political but with pure raw emotions flowing into the words . Have the Album & a 1990 Pioneer Record Player double CD + 2 Tape decks n speakers remote & i just use double ended jack lead to play any music even phones or mp3 mp4 etc etc. If you have one use the Data button on the stereo n off you go .
