Back in the day I was 14 and this was the first album I bought! It was in mono as stereo players were rare in those days. I just knew that this band were unique and destined for bigger things after I bought the singles "Arnold Layne" and "See Emily Play". "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" never disappointed me, and to this day, 50 yrs on, is still my favourite album. I met all the band after a gig at Manchester Free Trade Hall in the late 60s. At the time, PF were available at 300 quid a night! I have many fond memories from those beautiful days of underground music and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did.

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.... At one point, Mole notices Rat leaning out the edge of the boat, transfixed with something Mole cannot see. Rat then begins to cry, saying that he heard a beautiful melody that made him extremely happy. A moment later, Mole hears the song, a tune coming from pan pipes. Entranced, they follow the music to a small island in a narrow stream. On the island, they see a faun, holding pan pipes and standing over a sleeping otter. (He is an allusion to the Greek demigod Pan.) They instinctively fall to the ground and worship him, but forget the experience as soon as they stand back up. Pan has also disappeared. Once they wake from that trance, they realize that Portly is the otter lying there. They row him home, dropping him near the bridge where Otter waits nightly, so that the family can reunite without their interference. They spend time trying to recollect what happened to them. Rat, being a songwriter and poet, tries to recall the words to the song they heard, and the lyrics tells a story about a helpful creature who watches over small animals, but then makes travelers forget they had ever seen him.

@@StripeyR This is a great review, I love the Syd Barrett period

I started with the 'big ones' like Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here. I got the Relics compilation for Christmas and I was surprised by how different they sounded and the writing credit to 'Barrett' on some of the tracks confused me because I had no idea who he was. So I went out and bought this on vinyl out of curiosity. Phenomenal! I'd never heard Pink Floyd like it. Interstellar Overdrive and Bike were my introductions from Relics so I got a small taste for the original Pink Floyd sound. But I was still blown away by the amazing sound I heard. Saucerful Of Secrets is next on my list......

Great review of a great album Stripey. I have always wondered how Floyd would have developed had Syd not had his problems. I too like to think he stayed with them in some way as an influence. It was released 3 months after Sgt Peppers and I do think it was nearly as influential and has never quite got its due recognition. Interestingly it was produced by Norman "Hurricane" Smith who engineered a lot of the Beatles earlier albums. As you say This is Syd. God Bless him.

Excellent review Stripey of a genius album. First heard it as part of the Nice Pair double album with Saucer. Also got the Crazy Diamond box set, a must for any Barratt fan. You really must visit the V & A museum for Floyd's exhibition, mind blowing. The Floyd shop there us eye popping!. Love to see a review by you of that!.

Yes, cameras allowed but filming not. However....a sneaky one can be done!. By the way, when you spoke about The Gnome and said "if he wasn't on drugs when he wrote that..." I was in hysterics!

My first version was a two-fer with both LPs bearing the same cover. I recognized Waters, Wright and Mason, but decided the guy with the curly hair in the right hand corner didn't look like Gilmour and didn't sound like Gilmour either. It was the most different Pink Floyd album I've ever heard. I raised a few eyebrows through my first listen and went back and repeated some tracks in total disbelief. THEN Bike comes on...LOVED the insane duck noises at the end, and it's a lot more frenetic in mono.

Hey Stripey! I'm new to your channel and I love it. You're quite a charming character! Ha ha. All your Beatles' reviews go without saying, since I've been a hardcore Beatles devotee since age 3 (age 40 now). Love me some Barrett era Floyd. "Piper.." is a masterpiece. I first saw the album cover in a 1987 Rolling Stone magazine I had "The 100 Greatest Albums Of The Last 20 Years." I didn't hear the album until 1991 when I got it on CD (one of my first CD's actually). It completely blew me away. The stereo effect near the end of "Intersellar Overdrive" was so much fun to listen to, as my eyes would shift back and forth with the stereo panning. I have the American LP on the Tower label, and it's chopped up pretty bad. "The Scarecrow" and "The Gnome" follow each other as the first two tracks on side two, and yes "See Emily Play" starts off the album, albeit in annoying fake stereo! Ugh!

Hello Matthatter, thanks for tuning in. It sounds like the Tower mix of Piper is completely different...interesting! I discovered Piper just 2 years before you 1989 and was blown away, and its one of my favs for sure. I can only imagine what it was like in Abbey Road during Piper & the Pepper sessions back in 67...amazing! cheers again for watching!

I had that one for awhile, but it drove me nuts, trippy Tower label notwithstanding. I prefer the British version.

Wow, I haven't listened to Ram for ages & I love it. This is when John & Paul were at each other I think. Paul's' "Too Many People" & John returned with "How Do You Sleep" on the Imagine album, I don't know if there were others. Yes, BeatlesBoy 1234 I will put Ram in my Vinyl wish list! thanks for stopping by.

Have you heard this album in mono? Some tracks are really quite different. Flaming has more psychedelic phasing effects, and Interstellar Overdrive has organ that isn't heard in the stereo. I agree that Bike is incredible - my favourite track. I maybe don't love it as much as you do, but it is a great record all the same.
