Pink Floyd Plays With Their Brand New Singer & Guitarist David Gilmour on French TV (1968)
In 1968, Pink Floyd’s relationship with increasingly drug-addled lead singer/songwriter/guitarist Syd Barrett unraveled. Though Barrett’s departure wasn’t officially announced until April, that band had already begun, by necessity, performing and recording without him late the previous year, adding guitarist David Gilmour to the lineup to supplant Syd’s erratic performances. In February of ’68 the band appeared minus Syd on a French live-music program called Baton Rouge. Sixties music blog A Dandy in Aspic describes the show as capturing during its year-long run “some of the best British Mod/Psych bands at their peak,” including The Small Faces, The Moody Blues, and the Yardbirds, with Jimmy Page.
This Floyd footage, however, is especially significant for its portrait of the band finding its way through the trauma of its chief architect’s mental demise, with a seemingly awkward Gilmour taking over: “It still sounds great, but the band are visibly uncomfortable. Roger Waters' dark psychedelic gem 'Set The Controls For the Heart Of The Sun' sounds amazing, and 'Let there Be [More] Light' is an indication of Pink Floyd's new, post-Syd direction.”
In addition to those two songs from their upcoming second album A Saucerful of Secrets, the band plays two songs from their debut, Piper at the Gates of Dawn. The weird mystical chant “Astronomy Domine” doesn’t suffer at all, since keyboardist Richard Wright sang the lead vocals on the album version and does so again here. David Gilmour takes over the lead for Barrett’s “Flaming,” which is such a Syd song, with its disturbing and childlike lyrics and loopy vocal melody, that his absence becomes noticeable. But it comes off fine, if somewhat stiff, and the song remained in their set for years afterward.

As I watch this performance, I'm reminded of Gilmour stating he was uncomfortable singing Syd's songs, but due to them being "completely different" guitarists, he was even more uncomfortable playing the lead guitar parts. It didn't take long, however, for Gilmour's genius to flourish and he eventually became PF's Alpha Dog. He also managed to discover/nurture other artists and put out 4 quality solo albums.

You should read about the band. Dave became the leader in 1985 when they reformed as a different group. According to Dave, Roger was by far the dominant creative force from the time Syd left until The Final Cut. He conceptualized the albums, composed the lion’s share of the music, and of course wrote all lyrics. Rick was a distant second, composing a few amazing songs like Great Gig and Us and Them, and Dave was third, developing guitar parts and making important contributions to and helping develop what were predominantly Roger’s conceptions, both on tour and in the studio, and doing lead vocals on about half the tracks. The only really notable song for which Dave was the primary source / composer from their peak decade was Comfortably Numb, which was altered by Roger, obviously bc he’d written the rest of the Wall and was gonna have input and final say on the song. None of this info is from me. Most of it is from Dave, Rick, and Nick in various interviews. Often when interviewers ask Dave about the genesis of or idea behind a song or album, and he says “you’d have to ask Roger, but…”, and info from easy to search authorships of all these various songs. For the record, I’ve played guitar many decades and Dave is my favorite guitarist, plus there’s a lot of bogus info out there about Roger being only a lyric writer. So I’d love to say Dave was the main man, but I’ve seen tremendous amounts of evidence to the contrary.

@@rxw5520 Oh, I've read a thing or two about the creative process of Pink Floyd with my main book sources being the 581-page PINK FLOYD ALL THE SONGS THE STORY BEHIND EVERY TRACK and the 155-page PINK FLOYD EVERY ALBUM, EVERY SONG. You appear to have misinterpreted my statement that Gilmour, "eventually became PF's Alpha Dog." That statement was in reference to David becoming the band's leader after the lawsuit with Waters was settled. My research (e.g., books, video interviews) on the band's creative process is at odds with some of your conclusions. For example, while Waters did conceptualize the albums and he wrote all but a handful of the lyrics, he did not compose the lion's share of the music. Gilmour and Wright were the melodic heartbeat of Pink Floyd with Gilmour providing lead/rhythm AND occasional bass guitar work, and Wright being the only band member with musical training. Nick Mason has pointed out that Roger had no respect for David because in Roger's opinion, the music was far less important than the lyrical content. In a 2011 interview, David pointed out that prior to making THE WALL, he listened to demos created by Waters and that the demos were "dreadful." Gilmour added that he began to emphasize the importance of the music to Waters and his concern that, "the music will suffer," if Roger continued to embrace lyrics/concept over melody. Gilmour's insistence on writing great melodies (e.g., Goodbye Blue Sky, Comfortably Numb) paid off for THE WALL is at its best when it provides the audience with hooks and fantastic musicianship. Unfortunately, this musical momentum was short-lived for Waters went all-in on lyrics/concept in THE FINAL CUT. Every Pink Floyd fan knows about the myriad of problems with the making of that album, but my biggest takeaway is that it puts the proverbial final nail in the question of who did what in Pink Floyd? Several years ago, Waters appeared on Marc Maron's radio podcast and he stated that Gilmour/Wright ridiculed him for his lack of musicianship and that it wasn't until after he parted ways with Pink Floyd, that he realized he had innate musical talent(s). Heck, in the early days, David would have to tune Roger's bass guitar, so the idea that Waters composed the melodies for most of the pre-1987 Pink Floyd songs is just plain goofy.

Although I absolutely love PF, many years ago I made the mistake of underrating Mason. I found him a weak link. Then, in an offhand conversation, a friend ask what I expected of him. I answered that he didn't seem to "flash" or have a dynamic presence. My friend humiliated me by asking me to imagine Neil Peart playing for PF. I actually thought about that for a moment and came to the realization that you are exactly right. Mason is exactly what PF needed from a drummer and he filled his role perfectly!

Pretty impressive when you factor in the fact that he was the ONLY member with NO formal training whatsoever! Everything we have seen is from someone that self taught himself to play guitar. Considering he now is included as having the 3rd best guitar solo of all time, that's pretty damned talented! Obviously, I'm referring to Comfortably Numb. No teaching, good looks and the right group of friends = millions of dollars and a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

Oh my gosh, yes, taking machines apart or bikes, cars, whatever you were curious about, & then creating your own machine using old & used parts was cool!!! My brother & I spent hours taking apart, recreating, putting models together & sharing with the family! We put on our own plays at home, played dress-up, had the best parties... everyone bringing their newest records to play & share - we'd run out the next morning with babysitting &/or paper route money in our pockets & bought the album we thought was the coolest!!! I'm constantly feeling sooo let down & sad for our children's children...😕 Today's kids pretty much only identify themselves by how they dress, their hair styles, if you're gay or not &, oh yeah, better not appear to be homophobic or racist - don't speak your mind... in fact, don't have an original thought! Terribly Heartwrenching 🙁 Everything is made for you, pretty much, & you look bad if you don't have the latest phone. Not many of us can get along without our phones &/or laptops - they're designed that way, of course. Anyway, I guess we do our best today, we were soo much happier in the 60s & 70s & had healthier, well, EVERYTHING! I hope the Best for you & yours 🍁🍃🍂

Damn...gotta give some kudos to Nick Mason showing some serious chops back in those days. The style then but some complex sticking going on there. And this was something else watching Floyd in their early configuration post-Syd (RIP). And what came just a few short years after this was legendary. Who woulda guessed that? Priceless.

Great vintage video. Love watching Nick Mason go in an almost shamanic trance while drumming Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun (Son?). They sound amazingly good, considering a lack of fancy sound manipulation to give that Pink Floyd intensity. It clearly always has come from them and their music.

Old surfer dude here (born in 1950) and i've seen all the heavies through the decades but one gig stands out among sooooo many others. The 1970 Ummagumma tour at UCSD's baseball field. Along with Leon Russell and the Shelter people and Hot Tuna (W/Will Scarlett) on harp. This was Pink Floyd taking everyone their (along w/the Brotherhood of light) on a trip that Rod Serling would have approved of. As many times as i've seen Pink Floyd this was an other worldly performance by 4 outstanding musicians...WOW

like many Pink Floyd fans, I was curious to hear their original work, and so, at the time went back and got all their earlier albums, but if the truth is to be told, the Floyd that most people fell in love with started with the second side of Meddles: ECHOES, and continued on with Dark Side, etc.....These guys were searching themselves, but finally found "the holy grail" and the rest is history...

David always cared that Syd receive his droits d'auteur (don't know the english word) , so he had enough money to live His own family didn't care about him altought he suffered schyzophrenia. How is it possible ? PF sang "Wish you were here" when an strange man entered the studio and it was Syd. They didn't recognized him in the moment. He was there and he was not and never would be again. Poor boy. He was so overtalented. I hate Thimothy Leary for his idiot promisses of an extending spiritual expansion.

Gilmour looks at the camera several times as if to say, "I know, I know, but just wait a couple of years. It's gonna be great." You could never look at this session and imagine what was about to occur. But, you could look at it and think they'd made a good move getting rid of the mad fella.
