I also checked out the Stumpy evo and the cheapest Carbon Version is 5400€ and has a Fox 36 Rhythm... I mean?! That's a fork id say is okay on 3k Bikes or so. There are 4k Carbon bikes out there with Fox 36 Factory and Factory Damper in the back. And better Brakes aswell. What makes Specialized and Trek so ridiculously expensive? I would love the bike but I just can't bring myself to buy something for double the price i pay somewhere else for same components

There's not an Ibis that is a direct comparison, as their 29ers have longer (RIpmo) or shorter (Ripley) travel than this batch of bikes. From what they said only the top level gets the live valve. So I would assume lower level giants wouldn't ride/climb as well. Not a very well rounded test. Very subjective to where the riding would be done. I will never get to ride squamish so none of their opinions mean shit to me.
@aljowen
@aljowen 3 жыл бұрын
@@mikepupach5461 I own a base model 2018 Trance which is a different bike, but similar suspension design, I suspect their verdict would actually be similar. The bike climbs great, and pedals great. On flatter (by flatter I mean elevation, not devoid of features) trails it feels genuinely fantastic, it just flows and feels right. Personally I love it on the downhill sections too (obviously I would say that), but its geometry isn't as long/low/slack as many other modern bikes so I suspect it probably doesn't fair so well comparatively if your goal is hitting trails at race pace, its also likely less confidence inspiring on steep gnarly stuff. I guess my takeaway is that Live Valve just makes that effect even more so.

Despite the ending comments, I'm pretty impressed by the Mojo. It was only 5 seconds behind the Stumpjumper in overall time on that gnarly of a trail, and it has the funner wheel size. It was handicapped with a much lower drivetrain spec. and the wrong fork. I'm assuming the fit damper didn't have the intended traction tune--in addition to not being as good as the grip damper. I'll take a more agile bike to have fun on if it can do that kind of a trail with a less than 5 second deficit.

If the Live Valve is so great for pedaling and so crummy for descending, I truly don't see why a remote lockout (possibly wireless) wouldn't be the way to go - yet none of these bikes has one, do they? They're always saying, this or that bike pedals great, you'll never bother with the lockout, then they test something with automatic adjustment or digressive travel and suddenly gush about how well it pedals.

Ok, so it is between the Ptrain and the Stumpy… That being the case, there’s one thing that would definitely tip my scale; For as much as I want to have a bike underneath me that will inspire all the confidence in the world, and will allow me to enjoy riding my bike, I also want to have an easy buying experience, and if I understood correctly, the Ptrain is a “frame only” product (or “frame & shock only”)… So, not only I’d struggle to build a bike that would be as good a trail machine as the one (built and) tested by you guys, but I highly doubt that I’d be able to keep the build as economical as an “off-the-shelf” Stumpy. As we all know, trail bikes get ridden pretty hard, and are not necessarily cheap. With that in mind, having a bike with warranty, is very important for most people, so the added peace of mind that would come with the Stumpy, would add the ease of choosing between both these bikes. I’m sure that the Ptrain is a blast to ride, but if it was my money, I’d go Stumpy.

Seeing how bike shops have started requiring payment before even building the bike, so you don’t get to throw a leg over before testing, this review is disappointing. The Specialized uses a different suspension type on the carbon bikes, so Aluminum bikes can’t infer anything. The Giant bike review is based entirely around the LiveWire shock, and the P Train doesn’t exist. So basically, you only reviewed 2 bikes to help people make purchasing decisions on. 10/10 for entertainment, but low marks for using this review to help make a decision.

Would be interesting to see how different the new all cnc’d alloy P-train would feel on the climbs. As an owner of a rather heavy Stanton SwitchbackFS I wouldn’t worry at all about the slower climbing of the P-Train and would go for that. No non recyclable carbon is a massive plus too.

But the carbon is what 2kg of material? All the bikes probably come with more packaging material than that.

So. Obvious question: What would happen if you combined Fox Live-valve with the P-train!? 🤔

@pinkbike

A lot of it depends on what we can get, what's new/interesting, and what we haven't already reviewed during the year. Sourcing bikes for this Field Test was particularly difficult due to product shortages from many brands.

How about this. If you are only going to run one model year trail bike test, then run data on the most popular model/price point sold and then that is the price point you test on. I just find it hard to believe there are that many $7,000 to $10,000 bikes sold versus the 3000 to 4000 range. If you can run two trail tests a year then do it on the most popular price point and the cream of the crop models. Take this same theory to all mtb types.Just getting back into Mtbs and catching up on the models.So if you are doing the theory above then thumbs up. If not perhaps its something to think about.

3 out of 5 are single pivot bikes? Looks like the industry is going back to basics. Threaded BB's and single pivots.
@fabiojones4157
@fabiojones4157 3 жыл бұрын
There’s only two also not sure if the p train is actually single pivot cause if not that would leave just the stumpy. Plus the flex stays are definitely new technology so I don’t classify it as a regular single pivot
@litchips
@litchips 3 жыл бұрын
@@fabiojones4157 Both are single pivot because there is a rigid stay from main pivot to wheel axle. There are Horst link flex pivot bike from Cannondale, where flex joint is on chainstay, but Specialized put theirs on the seatstay, so it's single pivot. Which tells me that Specialized was only pushing Horst link for the exclusivity while they had a patent on it, not because it was better than single pivot.
