AQUAMARINE CLARIFICATION: Benji showed me the movie three years ago right after my mom died. I was in a rough place and just needed something fun and light hearted to watch. To both of our surprise, I ended up loving the movie! Benji immediately regretted that we didn’t get my “first-time reaction” but it was honestly what I needed. Fun fact in the kiss scene, char asked Ella to kiss him, but the ding that happens when she has to obey doesn’t play, meaning Ella truly wanted to kiss him and it was her decision not the curses, basically this whole movie is an allegory for consent
@PinkPopcast10 күн бұрын
Ooooo 😮
@Itzezyyyy9 күн бұрын
And when he wants her to stay at the party but says she doesn’t have to and that he simply wishes her to she gives a genuine smile of relief and it’s so bare minimum, but meaningful to her. Crazy how consent works 😂
@okquren9 күн бұрын
It does play its just quieter, the scene and whole char relationship is about the messier/less clear cut types of consent, but in a v digestible version compared to the book lol the og is ruthless
@Lefty_loosey9 күн бұрын
@@okquren it’s quiet but if you notice every time she’s given an order she sits up straight, and she seems in pain, in the kiss scene she doesn’t sit up straight, yes the curse is there almost waiting to act, which is why you here a flutter of the ding, but Ella brushes it away and takes her decision into her own hands, it’s the first moment where she truly does something because she actually wants to
@okquren7 күн бұрын
@Lefty_loosey yes I know, it's meant to be messier but obv it's done in a super screen/child friendly way cause the convo of "if it's a demand.. yet I want it.. how does that affect my consent?" Is a hard topic even with fully functioning adults yanno? There's a video essay on yt called like "What Ella Enchanted teaches us about consent" or something I totally reccomend it, hopefully that doesn't sound like a "see it my way!!! Check the receipts!!" LOL idc either way everyones entitled to their interpretations, just a good watch if it peaks the interest 😅

@roxirock5455 But also better, and the prince's family are supposed to be POC (though that's an easily glossed over detail as a kid if you don't know what the word "swarthy" means). They have more time to build Ella and Char's relationship, so it feels like they became friends first in an organic way and not a "you're not like other girls" enemies to lovers trope way. And Ella in the books loves languages and saves herself from the ogres by speaking to them in their own language and hypnotizing them!

I haven't seen this since it first came out when I was a kid but watching it now, as a grown woman, I can't help but see it as an allegory about what society demands of women - their own wants and desires be damned. Though I don't love the implication that solving that problem is as simple as an individual just telling themselves to listen to themselves and to attract a man who will listen to you when the issue is so systemic....but hey, it's a fairytale movie from the early 00s, that was about as radical as they got. ANYWAYS - thanks for the fun watch, fellas!

So a fun thing I've learned, is that ye, Lucinda has very...misogynistic gifting...like I learned in another story, she turned a woman into an orc...because she rejected a man's marriage and the man was hurt. And the only way to get her turned back was if she accepts the marriage purposal. So through that lens, you can see some...implications and bad things about Lucinda... Also the reason the house fairy can't say "Don't" when Ella had to get rid of her friend, is because her voice does not carry. Her say would just be overridden again and again by the stepsisters or the stepmother. Because you can see how fast they picked up that Ella has to do commands. It'd be mighty suspicious if Ella went to the door with the fairy in tow since they are more family. It's just a really shitty situation...

Her letter to Char probably would’ve been read before he got it and if she’d said his uncle killed his father it probably would’ve been intercepted

Hugh Dancy has quite the underrated charm especially with his slightly unkempt hair.

Yes, there was a face in the tree. They hid tons of faces in the movie. There was an extra on the DVD pointing it out.

The mom screwed Ella over so much. She didn’t want anyone to exploit the curse so she did it herself.

It was a sign that you guys watched this. I’ve seen SO many Ella Enchanted videos and have heard so many songs from this movie from the past week.

Rizzo's sweater looks so cozy! Also if you love Lucy Punch, I would highly recommend St. Trinian's, which has a stellar cast. Though I'm not sure how monetizable the video would be.
