Something that is so casually NOT mentioned is Joel’s wife/Sarah’s mom isn’t around anymore. And while it could be some sort of divorce, the way they both act just gives off a feeling of the mom having passed away at some point, but Joel and Sarah still love each other unconditionally. Such a small almost nonexistent detail, but once you notice it’s impossible to ignore.

Some info about this episode (NOT SPOILERS): 1. The reason the people who are recently infected, Runners, are so uncoordinated is because the person still has some awareness that is fighting the fungus. In the game you can hear some Runners crying and saying "Oh God". 2. FEDRA, Federal Disaster Response Agency, run the Quarantine Zones and are the last remnants of the US Govt. 3. The green flashes outside when Sarah wakes up were electric transformers blowing up. It's never specified why they were exploding, but the best theory is that the grid is damaged during the outbreak. 4. You were right that the planes were all leaving the airport to escape, and, because this is after 9/11 and the cockpit would be sealed off, the one that crashed probably had an infected pilot or copilot. 5. The woman in the watch store is aware of the coming outbreak. The woman was speaking in Arabic to her husband and earlier in the episode it's announced on the radio that there's "unrest" in Jakarta, Indonesia. Indonesia has a pretty big Arabic population and it's possible this woman has family or friends who live there.

Point 4 is impossible to happen in real life though, planes can't fly in a line up with such a short intervals due to wake turbulence. There needs to be at least 2 mins interval, otherwise the plane behind the other would lose control over the rolling effect of the vortex created by the other plane. And I'd like to think that the plane that crashed was due to failed pull up attempt. Pilot who have eaten infected meals would at least shows symptoms of being sick a few hours before the infection takes full effect (grandma case) which means they would deem themselves unfit to fly and would be replaced. But the failed pull up may make sense if for an example the airport was in chaos because of the outbreak and either the ATC warned them not to land or the runaway was already overrun by people who were escaping and the infected chasing them.

I think what is the most heartbreaking aspect of Sarah’s death is that, even in a world where there is this sudden outbreak of zombies and infected, Sarah dies due to an act of gun violence. Idk why that hit me so hard, but I think it’s interesting when you look at it through the lens of 2023 in America-we have such a serious issue with gun control/violence.

its not really about surviving, its more about the relationship between joel and ellie. It truly is a masterpiece of a show. Highly recommend. It is not about the infected really, yea the outside world sucks and the humans are what we should fear, but seeing the relationship between ellie and joel grow is a beautiful thing to see. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are absolutely fantastic and sell it. Their chemistry is fire. Highly recommend you watch the whole season.

As a huge fan of the game, the way Neil Druckmann (the game's creator) and Craig Mazin have made the show so integral to the game while adding onto it is fantastic, the amount of pure love and work that went into this is so evident. Anyway with the show I think it’s considered nearly impossible to find a cure because it isn’t a disease, it’s a plant. When you want to get rid of a plant that’s taken root, you ether rip it out, burn it out, or poison it. But it doesn’t always work. Also what I like about “last of us” is it makes so much sense, like normal zombie apocalypses would realistically not last long because corpses don’t take long to decompose, especially when facing the elements. But the fungus keeps the body alive enough to keep it going for awhile, and even when the body gives up, the fungus still lives and just plants itself, continuing risks of infection. So makes sense it’s around for so long because it’s part of nature. But the great thing about “last of us” is even though everything feels hopeless, it gives reasons to live. Not survive, live. It can be weirdly hopeful. Gosh as someone who’s watched a full let’s play of the game, the show is honestly doing an amazing job.

I played the game but I was still soooo excited for this show, especially when I saw that Pedro was cast as Joel. I've been waiting weeks before watching you two so I could binge several episodes. I love you guys! The fact that they open the series showing the breakdown of Society exactly as the game did was a huge plus for me. With other zombie shows you're usually already in the middle of the outbreak or several years post outbreak. Such EXCELLENT world building and tone setting right out the gate. 7:06 so damn true. We drove to Denver, it's a 12-hour trip, and 8 of those was just driving from Dallas to the NM border!

Fun non-spoilery facts tho since you guys never played the game, some of the voice actors from the game make appearances on the show. In this episode Marlene is played by her voice actor. I had no idea they were going to do this, so while she was talking I was like "Marlene sounds like Marlene?" only to find out duh cuz it's the actual Marlene. Final fact is that this is probably the best adaptation of a video game ever. Some scenes were carbon copy off the game, other scenes were added that's not in the game, but magically it didn't ruin anything. Truly a gem of a show. Just please avoid spoilers as much as possible.
