I love how this episode emphasizes that at the end of the day, growing old with your family or love of your life (whether that be romantically or platonically) and living a life you can be proud of is truly what humans desire above all else.

Cool Stuff About This Episode (NO SPOILERS): 1. People estimate that Bill is about 10 years older than Joel, which means he was a young adult during the AIDS crisis of the 80s/90s. It's also a popular theory that this is what motivated Bill to be so distrustful of the government. Which makes perfect sense given that he would have seen the Regan Administration completely ignoring a deadly disease because it impacted people they didn't care about. So when the Cordyceps outbreak happened he was distrustful, and it saved his life. 2. Bill probably hated "the world" and "most people", because he's a gay man who grew up in the 20th century, lives in a somewhat rural area, and has no one in his life because of who he is and where he is. Like, yeah, I'd be pretty grumpy too. 3. Frank probably picked up on Bill's sexuality because he spent more time with the gay community, especially given how social and outgoing Frank is. Bill didn't seem to pick up on the hints cause, well, he wasn't around the community. Which makes Frank's attempt to get a read on Bill even funnier, cause Bill is like "It's so strange talking to someone." and Frank is like, "BUT IS HE GAY OR NOT?!" 4. Frank's illness is never specified, but the creators said it was either MS or ALS. I think it's probably ALS, because it's more common in men and mostly diagnosed between 40 to 70 years old. 5. Frank said, "Paying attention to things is how we show love" and later the house is full of paintings that he made of Bill. And judging by the number of paintings I'd say he really loves Bill. Also, if you notice, Bill is watering the flowers and maintaining the outside of the house, because he knows it makes Frank happy. So I'd say Bill also really loves Frank. 6. Since the world fell apart in 2003, same-sex marriage never happened in the US. So, Bill and Frank getting married is extra heartwarming and heartbreaking.
@wtimmins

Same-Sex marriage was legalized in Massachusetts in 2004. Cruelly, a few months after Outbreak. So... yeah, double underline your point 6.

I agree with everything except that it was probably MS. Bill and Frank would have no way to diagnose ALS, meanwhile MS can be diagnosed very young without having serious medical consequences for some patients until they are much, much older. ALS also impacts the body differently than what was presented. He had upper body motor issues (swallowing, fine motor control, but could still do walking transfers - those few steps even with Bill's help says a lot.) I know most people wouldn't know that if you don't have personal experience or medical experience, but it's an amazingly accurate portrayal of MS.

i think a lot of people, especially those who played the game like myself, was expecting something similar to what they got in the game, or, what they got from bill in the game but i honestly liked the changes that they made. bill in the game DEFINITELY served his purpose and it was a fun section along with the fact that he was a fun character but i think the show NEEDED this. so much of it is bleak but this was a nice breath of fresh air.

@trevvy2124 Yes. Especially on how Frank went in the game, honestly that made me so mad, but I'm glad they at least gave the character a chance in the show. I do wish Bill and Ellie got to meet, I loved their interaction interaction the game.

It makes you realize how many bullets they dodged in that first episode as far as infection goes. They didn't make pancakes, they didn't eat the neighbor's biscuits, Sarah didn't eat the raisin cookies, Joel forgot to bring home a cake.

I LOVE this episode. I completely missed the sexual tension, so when Bill was playing the piano and Frank was behind him, I was convinced Frank was going to kill him😂. It was so sweet though. Nick Offerman did such a good job, especially in the scene where he told Frank he was basically a virgin. He conveyed the mixture of anticipation and nervousness at the same time. The whole thing was perfect, even the fight.

Watched this with my roommate, a straight guy who doesn't often cry at tv and movies, it takes a lot to get to him. Both of us were SOBBING at this episode. It was such a beautiful story, one that post-apocalypse stories don't tend to get into at all, which made it feel even more intense for me. I never played the game but I watched a Let's Player play it. I really appreciated the changes they made in the show to Bill and Frank's story. In the game, it's very different, I won't spoil that if you end up wanting to play it, but I personally much prefer the show's take on them. I was crying like Rizzo, but I was also bracing myself like Benji. I've seen so many queer couples suffer in media, usually just for tragedy p*rn reasons, and I kept waiting for that here. I think the show handled it well, and especially because they go into their room and close the door ... we don't get to see their final moments. They get privacy together. It's not gratuitous. Idk, I've seen a lot of painful stuff over the years and this one didn't feel cruel like those did.

Your reactions are great as always! This episode was so beautiful. it was so refreshing seeing this gay love story portrayed just as a story, without any stereotypes or coming of age/bullying tropes. Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett were perfect. I also loved Bill’s letter to Joel in terms of influencing Joel’s character development-he learns from Bill that through loving Frank and letting himself be loved, he was able to not just survive but live-surviving this world is meaningless without love. Joel realizes that he needs to protect Ellie the same way Bill protected Frank. Lastly, Joel is for sure an LGBTQ+ ally and we love that for him…Pedro is a huge ally and advocate himself (he has a trans sister named Lux)! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🍓

If I'm not wrong, in the game Frank actually hangs himself because he gets infected. He leaves Bill because he's fed up with the life they have and goes into the world where he gets infected. When Joel and Ellie get to Bill's they all go out to a city I think or something and they find franks hanging body. He leaves Bill a letter basically saying how the worse thing of the whole zombie apocalypse thing was living with Bill. (I saw someone who played the game react to this show and they explained that ^). Honestly I'm happy I the show their love story ends the way it did and not in the way the game did it.

20:05 I’m a married dude in my 50’s. I’ve been married to the same woman for literally over half my life. I’m onto firearms, preparedness etc. My wife also is into these things but not as much as I am. I used to watch prepping stuff a LOT. But then on one channel the moderator asked a question to folks in my age group (50 and above) - “You are older and having to take medicine regularly. What type of life would you have in the post apocalypse? Could you really see yourself living relatively alone and fighting off younger stronger people for decades with failing health?” My wife has had health issues and I’ve literally had to carry her up the stairs so this episode hit hard. After that thought I just changed my mind on a lot of long term stuff. As long as an emergency isn’t an end of the world SHTF scenario I will prep and be ready. But if it’s a global crisis I’m not gonna try to survive that by myself. Keeping my wife and our dog alive would be my priority and purpose. But there is no way I would try to live like Bill did alone. Had Frank not shown up dude would have probably went completely nuts and deleted himself. Frank saved Bill as much as Bill saved Frank This is a good human story anyone in a long term relationship can identify with. Kudos

When Rizzo started crying when they kissed I thought, "Oh noooo he's not ready 😭" The first time I watched this episode was through another reaction video (Brad Evans) while I was at work and was blindsided by how fast I cried. The two moments that got me was the conversation on the couch and Bill crying, then Bill saying "You were my purpose" ugh it gets me every time. Another video I watched on this episode pointed out that since gay marriage wasn't legal yet, this was the best possible future either of them could have ever hoped for.

Yea I assumed they considered themselves married until they had a wedding and we remembered it wasn’t legal before everything went down 🥹

This episode killed me when I first saw it. Still does. In the game it’s insinuated bill and frank were together but never was explored. This humanized them so much and really makes it a wonderful love story. I still cry every time

I’m so glad you guys are enjoying this show so far. Also love how in sync Benji is with Ellie😂 I loved your jokes and your thoughts on it. This episode really sends a clear message of what this show is about, the difference between survival and living. It kinda reminds me of a conversation I had with my parents when we were watching it, we like this show a lot and find it really interesting because not everyone is bad and not everywhere is doom and gloom. It is possible to live a better life, which makes things interesting because there’s more a moral weight to everything. It’s not like we’re all desensitized from everything because it’s all so bad and it doesn’t matter if you do something bad because everyone else is being terrible, instead there is a weight to it all. That it matters what is right and wrong and that we can do better. That helping people or opening up isn’t a guarantee to blow up in your face. Bill and Frank are proof of that, that we can be happy and help each other despite how bad the world is. The world might have gotten messed up, but it isn’t the end of it, it can still be good.

Yeah, that’s definitely like the conversation we had about really not liking zombie movies that are just about surviving and enjoying this one because it’s more about living ❤️❤️

Watched the live stream, but here's a comment for the algorithm: This episode made me cry so hard that I was worried my neighbors would come check on me. I'm not exaggerating. As a queer person with a degenerative neuromuscular disease, this episode hit me HARD!!!!!! People don't talk enough about how significant it is that Bill not only turns his back on Frank to play piano, but he immediately admits, "There's no girl," to a stranger. Frank could've been a raging homophobe who would've wanted to harm him for being gay. There were several real-world examples of that happening to people at that time. Bush was trying to ban gay marriage then, too, so this had to be intentional timing on the show's part. The fact that Frank cries when they first kiss, and Bill is so hesitant at first but reciprocates the kiss quickly despite how paranoid he is, shows just how lonely and starved for love both men have been. Frank may have gotten some gaydar vibes from Bill (the chargers, plating, and the way he poured the wine all read very queer to me, on top of all the body language and acting choices by Nick Offerman). Bill likely would've ignored any intuition like that he had, being as paranoid as he is. The show runners said Frank already knew about his MS/ALS, so he always knew he was going to deteriorate physically and need a lot of help. He definitely would've told Bill, and Bill was prepared to not only continue to protect them but to take care of Frank's physical needs. The man who doesn't care about appearances takes care of the flowers because he knows they're important to his partner, and he cares about Frank's emotional health as much as his physical one. Bill doing that is unfathomable on day 1. Bill and Frank getting married set at current day (as gay marriage staying legal in the US is on unsure footing) is so poignant. I definitely would've done the same as Bill and Frank at the end. If Nick Offerman doesn't win an Emmy for his performance, I'm going to be so upset. Thank you, Megan Mullally, for telling your husband to take this role. The world is better for it. Joel's daughter did have a bunch of biscuits at the neighbor's house, so she was going to turn regardless.
