I started watching this movie with very low expectations thinking it's "just another remake" and can honestly say I was captivated by it, like a little kid with my eyes stuck on the screen. I was a teary eyed blubbering mess at the end of the movie, which says a lot because I'm not easily emotionally touched by movies and rarely show emotions(my wife calls me a robot)

This is definitely how you expand and adapt stories to be so much more then what they were originally. The time era chosen, the setting and some amazing went a long way for this film. I was blow away by the emotion of it.

I love how Carlo's grave place such an important role in the movie. Geppetto tells Carlo that they must plant a perfect pinecone, because when one life is lost, another must take its place. Geppetto had Carlo for a time, and Carlo chose the perfect pinecone, in hopes of following in his beloved father's footsteps and becoming a woodcarver. When Carlo died, Geppetto planted the pinecone at the base of Carlo's grave, and from this pinecone grew the tree from which Pinocchio was born....thus taking Carlo's place as Geppetto's son. Then, when Pinocchio comes to visit his family's graves (Carlo, Geppetto and Spazzatura), one last time, their lives were lost, but he is now taking their place, as symbolized by the final pinecone falling. When Pinocchio meets Death for the first time, she says "I feel as if you have been here before....the wooden boy with the borrowed soul." I believe Geppetto's original wish WAS to have his beloved son, Carlo, resurrected from the grave. This is symbolized when Geppetto is carving Pinocchio and they show one shot of Pinocchio's body with Carlo's head. This is also symbolized by Geppetto saying that he wants Pinocchio to be like Carlo. I believe Pinocchio became a real boy, and Geppetto's true son, when he chose to sacrifice his immortality to save his father's life. Just as Christ hung on the cross as a living sacrifice to save humanity from eternal damnation, Pinocchio sacrifices his immortal life so that his father might live. There is no greater love than that. And I believe it is in this moment, when Geppetto is on the beach that he truly wants Pinocchio back and not Carlo.

I haven’t watched this properly yet but I actually like the idea of this grittier more modern take on Pinocchio, seeing the differences from the original movie and the similarities with the darker book version just mushed together is quite interesting

The boys turning into donkeys honestly creeped me out a little as a kid 😂 and I felt sorry for them especially when you see them earlier on and at that point you have no idea they are all human boys 😅

Like many I thought it was just another remake of the same story. I was actually surprised on the different take from Del Toro. In a strange way it was the same story, but more modern take.
