The lore of the Mansion just “appearing” one day is also a reference. Disney built the exterior of the attraction in 1963, 6 full years before The Haunted Mansion would open in 1969. Imagineers were still unsure on the effects, story and even the ride layout itself so the building just sat there on its own all that time… To the average guest it really did just appear one day without explanation.

Really Haunted Mansion has series potential, like each episode focusing on some of the most popular or iconic ghosts, as they share the mansion with the now living residents. I guess it would be very similar to that Ghosts series, but still fun to watch.

The Sea Captain character was the main story in Imagineer Claude Coats' original treatment for the mansion when it was a walkthrough. They even created a crazy effect where the room would flood but it took too long to reset for the next group!

Alistair Crump is named after Rolly Crump, a special effects Imagineer who contributed heavily to the Haunted Mansion. He sadly passed away a couple of months ago. Crump's most well known idea was the Museum of the Weird, which was a collection of bizarre ornaments. Sadly, it didn't quite get into the attraction, aside from the red armchair, which has a "face" resembling Donald Duck.

At the 2012 Sip and Scream (A D23 event at Disney World), they had the Imagineers who did the Escher room give a presentation. They said it was all developed in some non-descript warehouse along I-75, and they always laughed when they knew thousands of people passed this warehouse every day without knowing what was going on inside. The deeper lore behind the moving knight's armor is actually kind of funny. Disney actually tried having a physical scare actor in knight's armor pop out at guests for an additional scare many years back. But the actor got assaulted and hit so many times by people scared shitless that they just 86ed the actor and kept the armor as a statue

I'm a little surprised you did not mention the nod to Walt Disney himself in the last line of Danny DeVito saying to everyone to hurry up the chili is getting cold. This is in reference to Walt's chili, which is served in many of the parks, and the work of Walt on the Haunted Mansion.

Just saw it once, so I could be wrong about this, but I think he saw the caretaker, his dog, and the hitchhiking ghosts during his dream/nightmare while sleeping on the couch earlier in the movie, not when he was astral projecting. During the later "spirit realm" sequence, he doesn't leave the mansion to go into the graveyard.

Haunted Mansion was my favorite attraction when I went to Disney World as a 9 year old. I was impressed by how this movie recreated it. And, yes I waited until October to watch this. I didn't want to see a Halloween movie in July.

I overall liked the movie. I do however have some gripes with it. I would have liked to see the more famous ghosts have a larger role. A few have a medium role, but others are basically just cameos. A remix of the grim grinning ghosts song would have been really cool. The hitchhiking ghosts only have a few seconds of screen time. I’m not sure if I fully understand what The Hatbox Ghost’s goal was. The hatbox ghost is the main villain who they also give a name and backstory to. The bride makes a few appearances. Madam Leota also has a few appearances and helps the main characters. The stretching room paintings only appear in one scene. The atmosphere of the mansion was creepy, which I liked.

All of the different park Haunted Mansion rides were included in the design except for Hong Kong’s Mystic Manor as that ride has no ghosts. (Because it’s a sensitive cultural issue. They worship their ancestors and ghosts are considered to be real threats. Friendly ghosts just don’t fit into that narrative.)

The ghosts of different time periods are out in the graveyard of the ride. Some are having a tea party, others are performing along with the Singing Busts. The caretaker and his dog are not dead in the ride, but their cameos in the movie are so I guess they had a tragic accident together. But does the dog count as one of the 999?
