I met my eventual wife when she was 19, and basically just out of the Philippine provinces. Her accent then was fairly modest, with really only a few parts that were noticeable. Six months later she was virtually indistinguishable from a native American. It's always been funny when people first talk to her over the phone and then meet her later in person. With her last name of Schwartz they have certain expectations built up, and then this middle-aged, short Filipina shows up in reality. :-)

Filipinos pronounce words the way it is written. English accent is theirs. Filipino accent is ours and it doesn't confuse learners. It is not nasal and words/vowels are not eaten or missing in pronunciation. Spellingwise just by hearing, embarrased became embearast

They say: “British English is the correct and more precise English”. Then, how about American English? American English is closer to early forms of Early Modern English (the language of Shakespeare, Spenser, and Chaucer). Much of American English is older than British English. English is a West Germanic language that originated from Anglo-Frisian dialects brought to Britain in the mid 5th to 7th centuries AD by Anglo-Saxon migrants from what is now northwest Germany, southern Denmark and the Netherlands. Anglo-Saxon from Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire is actually the purest form of English. No English is more correct than any other. Language transforms and changes ALL THE TIME. Even in British English, there are many words that are added to and removed from dictionaries every year! So, the Philippines has the right and title to develop their own English and English accent. Cheers 🥂 to that Brown brothers!

Funny I always thought that American English is just derived from British English. Most modern Americans are refugees from England. So I thought they just brought the British language and modified it. Thanks for the lesson and for piquing my curiosity.

English is germanic mixed with corrupted latin. Middle and old english are hardly understandable much less the old saxon, jute and angle languages of the late antiquity. Edit: words are spoken and written differently because of vowel shifts as well as different foreign influences during specific times when certain words were started to be written.

@Ganda Gandara - How?... British English accent was developed in the 1800's, while American English accent is closer to the original, because the migrants migrated to the Americas before British English accent was developed.

Tama si mommy, ultimate rule in Pilipino is "Kung anong baybay sya ring bigkas" The reason why English is difficult because they pronounce the words differently depending on where the native speaker came from. UK has chutney, Welsh and central London accent and American and the kiwi and Aussie etc... They are so confusing, they even uses different terms on a certain object😅

Your mom is still beautiful, I can tell that and she is cool. She is a true Filipino, but I believe that she can change her diction and say it better. I have a friend in California and he corrects my English pronunciation and truly thankful because he is just concerned. Sometimes we need someone to correct our flaws. So never get offended if someone correct you because you never know that you're saying or doing things wrongly. Instead, be grateful to that person. Ang haba ng komento ko......hahaha

Hello! Might as well correct a little bit of grammatical error in your statement. Hehe. "So never get offended if someone corrected you..." - it should be this. Notice that if you used 'if' in a sentence, the verb should be in past tense. I hope you're not offended by this comment. :)

As far as I know living in Boston, Massachusetts for 27 years. There are different "American Accents" New England, New York, California, Puerto Rican and may favorite New Jersey accent like the Beastie Boys and every State has its own accent. The proper English is widely use in Colleges like Wil's accent or what we call it "proper" pronunciation of words.

i think its still depends on how a person will pronounce word/s comsidering thier regions or environment and if they were engaged in school or not. its still depends in the individuality's awareness. ofcourse socialization also affects a person's accent

Your mom is beautiful 😍❤️ and it's good because you took your mom for the challenge because her accent sounds pure Filipino and not modernized nor americanised.
