Pinpoint Automotive Repair

Күн бұрын

This vehicle had extreme hesitation, misfiring, and low power, all due to a simple ignition problem. This diagnosis was heavily based around the test drive, and covers important methods used to identify causes of low power conditions. Techniques used throughout the troubleshooting include...
Ford's cylinder contribution test.
Using O2 sensors as a guide to misfire type.
Analyzing primary ignition waveforms.
Staying in the driver's seat.
Using freeze frame data to duplicate fault conditions.

Thank you! I have a 2013 Ford Edge (123,000 miles) and I'm having the EXACT same issue. I knew it had to be spark plugs, coils or fuel injectors so obviously I went with the cheapest first, plugs. Got the front three it felt all better immediately after but now after a few days I sort of feel the hesitation back a little. The back three plugs are gonna be some work as you obvisously know. I wish I had one of those diagnostic computers, because if it ends up needing coils too it's going to suck taking the entire intake plenum apart again to replace the coils. That Snap-On Verus Pro D10 looks awesome, now I want one! Don't have the money for that right now though lol. Either way thanks for the video, it at least helped to reaffirm that it may be the plugs.

I have brought my 2011 edge in everywhere and as usual it never does this when getting it scanned Thank You so much this is exactly what my car has been doing, My first thought was ignition oil and plugs but as I said I've brought it in and the exact scanner was used but not as professionally as you took the time in filming and explaining. I thank you again for your time and helping me and everyone else with this issue. I will be doing the work tomorrow.

Thank you SO MUCH for posting this my 2011 Edge is doing the same thing exactly but I noticed it only does it while on the highway at a cruise speed and also when I accelerate while traveling it has never done it at slower speeds or at idle off to the shop I go with your video and the car manual my service engine light also was blinking during an acceleration as I tried to give it fuel to push past it then it stayed on for a bit then the light shut off

Great video! My 2011 Edge started these exact same symptoms and same Cylinder #6 misfire CEL code. I now understand that what my car's computer is doing is sensing the plug not sparking for an instant... So it is intentionally shutting that coilpack down for a moment to protect the coil from high voltage flyback and the computer itself from high voltage damages. It then turns the coilpack back on after a predetermined time or change in readings, such as a lower engine rpm. I guess if it didn't shut down the pack, I would see a CEL, but the car would probably keep running fairly smooth... but electronic damages could be happening subtlety and eventually pop a FET inside the computer.. Then it would be a much bigger problem! I thought the same thing as you... swap the coilpack to another position and see if the misfire code changes positions. Thanks again, my car has 113k on it and I'm sure it simply needs a "Tune Up". Unfortunately those back 3 plugs and packs will be a lot in labor and parts cost :(...

I am having the same problem with my 2013 Ford Edge. I am working on changing the spark plugs now in hopes that fixes it, I'm at 123k miles so it's probably good to change them anyway. I changed the first three that are easiest to get to and it felt better right away afterwards, but now a few days later I'm feeling it a little again.

Taking off intake manifold and replacing spark plugs does not take more that 2 hours, and 6 OEM plugs cost $35-40. Hesitation during acceleration - always #1 cause is spark plugs, plugs only good for 50-75k mi. Good diagnostic video. Next time - short cut - have plugs been replaced in the past 50k? . . if answer is no - head strait for plugs after verifying coils are working fine at idle.

Hey great video! Gave me some ideas on what was going on on my 2011 Ford 3.5 cyl # 5 misfire code. New plugs and coils replaced for maintenance then several thousand miles later #5 misfire code, swapped coils 5 & 6 misfire disappeared for a while and now has recently returned. I pulled the coils and just for fun the # 5 plug again to look at it and found it had cracks in the porcelain insulator! Motocraft platinum plugs. With 30k miles on them.

Any input will be greatly appreciated!!! My 2011 Ford Edge 2WD SEL has same issue (hesitation/sputters only when punching it while cruising at highway speeds.. feels like traction control because it's kind of jerky when it happens but it's not traction control) Wish you lived in NE OH! The Cadillac dealership (where I bought it from) says their test shows it needs a new Catalytic Converter whereas then the Ford dealership test said they didn't see anything needing fixed because neither the mechanic nor I was able to replicate the issue this one day (my Edge's Check Engine light turned off ONLY hours before my Ford appointment of course and believe it or not it turned back on 2 miles after leaving! Whereas it was on for the prior 2 weeks and has remained on ever since the appt! Literally UNBELIEVABLE! But even so, it should still show codes but STRANGE THING IS OR WHAT CONCERNS ME IS.. while on my 5 mile highway drive home from Ford, for the FIRST time ever, on two separate occasions within 15 secs of starting it in dealership lot and then again 3 mins later while driving, ALL of the dash warning lights ALL appeared for a few seconds)! Obviously Ford must've done something to cause this because nothing like this has ever happened before and I drive my vehicle 3 hours everyday 5 or 6 days a week! So I guess my next move will be to PAY $350 to have Ford replace the SPARK PLUGS (process looks too complicated to do myself after viewing YT vids on How To) because mine has 112,000 miles and to my knowledge they have NEVER been replaced! (I purchased it As-Is just 2 months ago with a verbal "30 day warranty" which is not being honored at Cole Valley Cadillac in Cortland, OH FYI) AWESOME INFORMATIVE VIDEO.. I apologize for the length of this comment but just in case you or someone has a good idea what I should do, it was worth providing any potentially necessary details.

Really useful video, thanks, your clear precise narrative makes it nice to follow along. Could I ask you, it looked like the coil wasn't being pulled right to ground, is that a problem or is it just due to the large current flowing through the coil? Thanks Jonathan
@pinpointautomotiverepair1592
@pinpointautomotiverepair1592 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Jonathan, are you talking about the tiny hump present during initial coil turn on during some of the captures? When you are talking about ignition coils, there is a large amount of current flow on the primary side (often near 10 amps). This tends to prevent a "perfect" ground from being applied due to voltage drop not only through the wiring back to the engine computer, but also the transistor in the computer itself. Looking back through the video, all of the waveforms we captured appear to be grounding quite near 0v, though I didn't actually measure that ground voltage. Another thing to keep in mind is the high voltage spike during the misfire event, a coil with a power or ground problem will not be able to produce the high firing line we noticed (in excess of 300v on the primary collapse). Hopefully this answers your question.

I have to say the Edge series are one lousy designed SUVs one can own. I have turned many down because owners wanted to fix & replace just the Check Engine Light #. Because only days later other spark plugs/coil go Pinpoint Automotive Repair, I and many agreed it's just silly that one has to go through all the labors just to get access to the spark plugs. And no experienced personnel (even to DIY) will replace only one spark plugs, one coil or one fuel injector. ATG, you & I know that taking /or pulling things in & out that you can mostly break those plugs and cooked thin wires. But again, many owners rather go to a cheap shop rather a good shop/dealership. All because owners think shops/dealers are ripping them.

Man, I have to give you a little crap for this. You just killed 30 minutes diagnosing something that is kind of a given. From the misfire code, you knew that you were going to do a coil swap no matter what. You could have saved yourself and everyone else a lot of time by just swapping the coil with cyl 5 and swapping the plug with cyl 4. Shoot, by hearing in the end you telling us that your swapping all coils and plugs regardless (because of the high miles I assume), who cares really if it's a coil or a plug if you're planning on some R&R for both anyway. The only reasoning behind all of this wasted time is to see if it were spark or a fuel injector but because you have to take the intake off anyway, just swap the injector too (not applicable to you but maybe someone down in the comments). JUST SAYIN, don't get caught up in the geeky high dollar equipment folks and keep to the KISS method.
