Don't forget to shift that motor back and forth with a prybar just in case that small leak is not evident immediately. And small cracks at the oxygen sensor bung are not to be overlooked while doing this. Oh and John is an awesome dude. Great video as always

Hey Guys & Gals! This is Brin. I wanted to share another technique that I've used when I suspect that a less than obvious exhaust leak is causing a biased rear o2, rear fuel trim concern or a catalyst fault. I watch rear o2 sensors while I plug the exhaust. If the rear o2 is biased lean at lower exhaust back pressure, (i.e. idle or low loads), I'll plug the exhaust to increase back pressure and watch the rear o2 sensor. If the rear sensor starts to consistently shift positive with the exhaust restricted/back pressure increased, you most likely don't have an exhaust leak causing your concern. I would recommend trying this several times to prove out your suspicions.

This is an Excellent test for exhaust leaks guys..it was taught to me by Keith a while ago and works everytime. It has mostly help me find that pesky p013c codes. You can also use regulated shop air and blow back into exhaust with the cone from smoke machine to do it..

I read this in ether the ATG books or a Quick Tip book by Joe Glassford. I haven't gotten the opportunity to test it out yet, but neat to see it here in action.

Yup! I did this. Got a shop vac from home depot, then put hose on the exhaust side, and taped the other end to the exhaust tailpipe. Then sprayed down the exhaust joints with soapy water and found my leak right away! Great info.....and this defe works! I had my doubts. Don't worry or doubt this trick. IT WORKS! thanks 😊

A timely video and well explained. My 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.3 L engine has thrown a P0420 code about a month after I replaced both upstream and downstream 02 sensors. This quick test can potentially save me hundreds of dollars. I'll post back my findings. Thanks

Mike Agostino I was doing the same with poor results. Smoke machines provide low pressure and volume and often does not show a leak. This is a simple method that seems flawless to me - Brian Culotta

I've been a subscriber for some time now, but for some reason this just showed up on my video suggestion feed. What a great tip! Also, for bubbles, I just use the kid's bottle of "Gazillion Bubbles" from walmart. It's (I think) 64 oz of bubble making solution for about 4 or 5 bucks. Put it in a spray bottle & "go to town"! Thanks for the great tip!

Is there any chance of blowing out any engine seals if there are no leaks? I imagine if pressure keeps building it’s eventually going to blow something out. What’s your take on this?
@NewLevelAuto2 жыл бұрын
Because we are not directly introducing into the crankcase ventilation , the volume of air being pushed through is low. We would never suggest using this method for long periods of time. Just a minute and some GOOD soapy water will find that leak fast!
@TheAutoTech6 жыл бұрын
Never seen that technique, will definitely have to try that! Did you have a suspicion of an exhaust leak before doing this?

Hi can an exhaust leak cause poor engine performance and engine vibration in a turbo engine?
@TrainedbyTechs2 жыл бұрын
That would depend on where this exhaust leak is. If it's significantly downstream of the oxygen sensors and turbo, I would assume, not likely.

My exhaust shop said to never do this because it's way more pressure than an exhaust system is designed to handle, and can blow out gaskets and seals. Thoughts?

I would suggest to them to watch this video and message us with any concerns. We know multiple people who perform this test without causing damage. The pressure and volume a shop vac provides is ideal for pinpointing leaks
