Most likely. Object culling is usually only graphical, and the massive increase in performance by removing its visual presence (helping the GPU render more things you're actually going to need to see) is monumental compared to the negligible CPU load of keeping one extra couch in the map; never mind that loading the couch back in would require extra disk bandwidth and CPU power. This, of course, happens to so much more than just a few couches, but the point stands for all of them. TL;DR - It's just visual. Anything a normal couch can do, this should do too.

Well researched and compiled. Good effort on this vid. It's interesting that you pushed the Combine APC into the map containing the railway bridge. I'll add a few more of my own facts and bugs: 1) Using alt-fire on the Pistol and 357 while underwater results in the game spamming the clicking sound effect. 2) You can destroy the TV the G-Man appears in at the beginning of Anticitizen One using a grenade (do this when you can hear the music coming from the TV). Doing this will result in the TV staying on constantly, and the G-Man and the crow circling him don't move. 3) Killing a Combine Soldier when they are throwing a grenade, but just before they actually throw it, will result in them dropping the grenade that you can pick up.

It's not necessarily OoB - if you skip the trigger that disables the player's immunity to fall damage, which basically all you have to do is keep going up the first flight of stairs you find, skipping the CP blocking the passage, and then go to the rooftop, you can just jump off the building and you'll land entirely intact. Then you can go and interact with the APCs. I remember this because when I was trying to get into speedrunning HL2 I thought of doing a more difficult, possibly currently obsolete route of trainstation_03, which is called the Baby Clip.

As a game designer myself, (one of) the weirdest things about Half-Life 2 is them letting you backtrack through old load zones to begin with. Someone has to specifically allow for that, because by default any new level you make would not recognize the entrance to also be an exit to link to the past map, and yet there's never any reason to go back and in fact going back sometimes breaks minor things. No idea if they intended for you to need to backtrack in a less linear way at some point and just axed it or what. It's also weird how they allow you to take certain things through load transitions that you don't need to take with you. Such a strange feature overall, from a design perspective. The rocket slowing down thing is funny because it's just the kind of simple mistake you'd make with the good intentions of trying to add a small detail to the game without realizing someone would do something weird like shoot into the water and then try to redirect it back out. It's probably just as simple as someone coded the rocket to lose speed on entering water, but didn't code it to regain speed on exit, thinking it would be very unlikely anyone would "dolphin" a rocket around.
@slothoverlord39842 жыл бұрын
Potentially could be to allow for retrieving resources that might have been left behind, or even the vehicles which can be left behind at some points and are meant to be necessary to continue
@kyle89522 жыл бұрын
You can backtrack through old loading zones because one of the foundational ideas of half-life is that the world is one large uninterrupted area. The only reason the world is split into distinct maps is because otherwise it would not fit in ram. The splits are usually totally innocuous and arbitrary places like half way down a road where there could be no in-universe reason why you couldn't just decide to backtrack.
@kisaragi-hiu2 жыл бұрын
It's a thing in Half Life 1 as well. As a player, being able to travel back to previous levels when the levels are connected in-universe makes them feel more like one place. A counter example is Doom 2016: even though there are a few levels that are actually connected in-universe and effort had been put into making the connecting rooms be identical, when playing they still just feel like disjointed levels. Put another way, levels are a implementation detail that the player shouldn't have to be aware of, and connecting them as much as possible enhances immersion even if players rarely backtrack.
@scantyer Жыл бұрын
The reason is for immersion. If you backtracked to the previous level and saw the enemies you just killed alive, it would be immersion breaking and arguably not satisfactory. Same thing with bringing items to the next level.
@Iambeef3 Жыл бұрын
Also in highway 17 when you go and deactivate the force field thing on the bridge, you go under the bridge to deactivate it and then go back to the level before in order to continue (and get hit by a train) pretty sure this happens elsewhere too but I’m not too confident to say where

Sideways gman in the intro is legitimately more spooky and mysterious than the original, when the black and white filter comes in the fact you can only see specks of his hair, his main face features and his ear is legitimately mysterious and adds a lot more mystique.
