I came back to Banished after a long sabbatical and just wanted a quick 'get back up to speed'. After bouncing through a number of videos labeled as tutorials and watching producers more or less just playing the game, I ended up here. Your video is well structured and everything you are doing is very well explained. Very helpful! Nice job! I'm ready to play!!

+Jim VanLaar It is detailed, but imo too detailed and long. There is no doubt it is all helpful, but it should be summarised so it's more interesting. I have made a top 10 tips video for banished where I have tried to include all the really important stuff.

Build lots of forester and lumberjacks. Build lots of trading posts. sell firewood. you win. you get unlimited supplies of everything. Remember.... 1) Firewood. 2) Lots of trading posts. the game is ridiculously easy. all you needed to know was firewood sells for a ridiculous value.

Every time I open up Banished with the intent of finally getting some of those achievements, I think to myself "Where the heck did I find that guide that had the cool forestry setup? It always worked well for me." I've finally found it again! And I'd forgotten a ton of the basics. Thank you for sharing this method so clearly and methodically.

Pinstar, I have been watching a few vids of Banished gameplay. They are decent to see what is going on but it's a bit painful to see how reactive the posters are and how randomly they create their villages. You, sir, leave the game in one spot so I can see what's going on; embark on a course of action; pause it all and very clearly describe the reasoning behind your choices; then prove your point when you move on. Your vid is everything I hope to find whenever I look at these! To hell with the naysayers in the comments! Your videos are THE standard. Exemplary work! je
@RichardHoman900910 жыл бұрын
Since you're obsessed with efficiency (which is a good trait, not an insult lol), you should consider placing all building and road footprints first, then allow the workers to work on all of those. Prioritize the stockpile so it's the first one done. As soon as any building's footprint is cleared (or nearly cleared if you want to be sure they don't start dropping in resources), pause it then. This way, you don't waste time collecting wood from so far away that you would have gotten from clearing space from the buildings, and the same for the stone. It won't be a BIG difference, but it should save a small amount of time.

@Alexander996027 жыл бұрын
In short -find forest -set in the middle of the forest as shown in video -gather 250 wood (must stay outside the gathers radius) -110 stone (must stay inside the gathers radius) -build gathers hut and barn, but build barn ASAP -build that wood cutter -build those houses, 6 in number -finish by building the hunters and forester

Hi! I can only agree to what a lot of people already said who were happy and thankful: I appreciate your well thought-out strategy, intelligent gameplay and explaining, and showing exactly what is needed for the purpose of seeing and understanding the strategy named in the title. Clear, concise, effective. I wasn't going to ad on to the praise, but after reading some peoples comments who weren't happy I felt I had to. It is the worst aspect of having eeeeverybody being able to comment, that some people can't understand the difference between "bad" and "not what I was looking for". Some people want to be entertained and hear a lot of jokes, some just want a strategy or new idea for their gameplay. Some players are experienced, some are not, and therefore will react differently to a more or less detailed explanation. Each viewer has the right to stop watching once they realize that this video is no what they expected or wanted to see. Period. It doesn't make the video "bad" for everybody. You can say "It wasn't for me", or "Thats not the kind of strategy I feel comfortable with". But you can't just say "This is stupid and everybody should not like it". That's the behaviour of a toddler. Please behave like grownups... (I know these posts are old, and the teenagers who wrote it probably grew up by now- but I'm a kindergarden teacher, so I can't help but put misbehaving toddlers in their place ^^)

You mentioned this build was about being efficient. If you let the workers cut the trees until they take their first break and then build the stockpile, they will return with full loads instead of cutting one tree taking it to the stockpile and repeating; the reduced traveling time will increase the rate of cutting and gathering for the first year. I liked the idea of centering the area on the gatherers hut.

You make this seem so effortless! I've just had three colonies in a row literally starve to death - and women dying in childbirth... I've been interested in this game since it came out - but at the time, my computer was a Mac - so no Banished. Now I've finally got it, and am flummoxed by how rapidly my people seem to come to a grisly end through my gross mismanagement and incompetence. It's a humbling, brutal game. Especially when the children start starving to death. Gods. I'm going to try this rather time-tested method and see how my next colony of misfits fare. Thanks for this.

I played Age of Empire I and II for a few years and loved it. I moved to World of Warcraft and have been playing for almost seven years. I still enjoy playing WoW, however I miss the strategy part of AoE. I just discovered Banished in the last couple of days and used You Tube to research whether it was a game I would like since I can not install my AoE game on my Windows 8.1 computer. I am really looking forward to finishing this series and very excited about giving Banished a try. Thanks for sharing your experience and S&T. I hope there will be more.

Hey Pinstar. First of all, this is a really nice build, thanks for sharing! I always refused to put that many buildings into a gatherers or hunters circle but obviously it does not disturb the production as much as I thought it would be. I really like the speed boost this givs, as everything is so extremely close by, it's amazing! I still have asuggestion that could make this a tiny bit more efficient though i did not test the difference yet. But your storage barn and stock pile are at the outer edge of your build there. As they somehow form kind of the center of the whole thing in the sense that every one of the other buildings needs at least one of them it might be more efficient to put them in the center of the cross roads. Especially for the woodcutter I like this, because you can get a nice little line up of the forester right next to the stockpile and then the wood cutter next to the stockpile and opposite to the storage barn. That way he can get and deliver his recourses so quickly and also the hunter might be closer to the barn this way, than it is in the build of your video. As I said, I did not confirm this yet, but it just came to my mind, when I watched this. Keep on the nice advice ;)

Thanks for the video! Great explanations and strategy! i also wish to add someting: i never put more than 1 people for gatherer house, forester, and hunter beacause i didn't noticed to bring double resources if there are 2 , or more. also i set 1/1 instead of 1/4 cause i think this influences the way they work ( dont have a clear explaination of that but u can experiment it). i noticed also that wild animals tend to walk on clear ground so i would put hunters north of gatherer, so the radius will be at least one third out of the forest - is also close to the barn. i try to switch the position of pile with the woodcutter and orientate the woodcuter facing the pile not the gatherer ;) with a road between them, also gives an extra entrance to the midle point, forester is closer to the pile... ( when i play a normal game, first thing i do is a 10x10 pile( in your case i will build the pile the same size as the wood cutter house) , that will be the center of deploying other building . also the place you leave empty if u move the hunter's log north, is where i put the building for tools and clothes. Also i am definitely agree with more house... first years i build a new house every time i see there are at least 2 children of 9 or more years to form a couple, so in long time they almost sure they will develope 3 children/ couple. if u don't paause the gaterer building, then that 1 builder will do roards and then start building gatherer ;)

I just found this game and since it is on sale, I bought it yesterday. I played a couple of times yesterday and ended up with 'marches of death' and everyone dying from starvation after the first winter. =P I decided that looking for some strategy vids would up my game play, which really couldn't be any worse. lol This video seems incredibly well thought out. I can't wait to try it. I wrote down all your directions and map before reading the comments. The typed up guide is ever so much better! Thank you for this awesome start. I'm going to go start a new map and see how mine plays out before I go on to video two. One last thing, I really hope that as I watch more of your videos, you stop responding to the people who feel it's their right to be critical of your voice. You're being way too kind. They don't deserve any response. You sound like you sound and they need to get over it. Note: For those who are wondering, the updated version of the written form changes the placement of the Hunter's Cabin and the Forester's Lodge, which Pinstar agreed would be a great idea.

I'd like to claim that there's no ultimate build or strategy, but starting with crossroads, and expanding with more crossroads builds, are one of the most efficient strategies, only beween the first and second crossroads build, remember to add blacksmith and tailor, since these are required items to continue to expand fully equipped new workers, then while building up to get extra workers for a mine and quarry to have material for the blacksmith and coming buildings that need stone, when close areas begin to be emptied of easily accessible stone, add extra food production, then trader at the river, supported with fisher, as this is also quick and efficient food, all year round. Also the first 6 houses might just as well be built close to where you plan to add marketplace, church, tavern, hospital and town hall. And like houses, also it's ok to have storage barns not too far from where you plan 1st market.

The hunter gatherer buildings are the highest food per worker efficiency. I spammed your crossroads build all over a map to reach more than 1000 population. After a certain point, I was making so much food per worker, I made entire an entire suburb area just to make a wave of babies (as you (and tosin abasi?) call it). It was a lot of fun.

I "invented" this method for myself (after many many unsuccessful towns), only I put the forester and woodcutter on the same road with the stockpile in between them, and put the herbalist in the 4th corner.
@skavies23517 жыл бұрын
I'm a little dubious over the massive footprint taking up space there, I normally only have forester, hunter, gathering hut and one in 3 of those clusters, a herbalist, but that setup (the one I use) produces a massive amount of stuff. It might be worth it to chew up some space for the close houses. Will have to test that. I do, however, dislike your wood cutter placement. Putting the stock pile across the street and lined up so the corner the wood cutter wants to use is directly lined up with the entrance to the wood cutter building will give nearly 15% more firewood per year than having it next to the cutter. I tend to trade massive quantities of firewood for everything I want, so making the wood cutter at peak efficiency is what fuels my entire society.

Thanks! I've watched a lot of "guide" videos on this game and this one is by far the most informative and detailed while not seeming slow. I've been having a lot of trouble with food and firewood once my population reaches around the 100 adults mark and while I imagine you probably cover this in more detail in later guides (which I will watch in the coming weeks) this video has given me some ideas as to why. I knew travel distance was an issue, but I didn't realize it was such a huge impact, but I can see why. I was wondering if you knew of a location where I could find statistics on how quickly different building produce different resources. Or even better, a chart of recommended number of specific types of buildings at different population milestones. I.e. something like, for every 50 citizens have one wood cutter, etc. Thanks again!

I am not going to say I'm an expert by any stretch, but the first year isn't nearly as complicated as this (and numerous other videos) represents. It's not until balancing children/students/labourers that you really should pay attention to what you're doing? But I guess 15 years of city-building games will do that to a fella. Still, great tutorial, even if I didn't learn anything from this first one. I'll definitely be watching the series. Edit to Add - I should clarify in saying that I didn't learn anything because you presented what I consider to be "THE" way to start your game. Sure, I may place building in different patterns, but the layout, gather, build operating procedure is uber efficient and works a treat.

I had a slightly different experience when using this method. Firstly i wasnt able to complete the build until late autumn despite pausing and setting up in the same times you did, children didnt grow up to adults as fast as in your video and also i didnt get 2 adults per house; some of my houses have 1 person or 3 adults and a child. build works well just took slightly longer as my people didnt mature in the same time yours did.

The one issue I have with this strategy is whilst you think your strategy is more aggressive because you end up with more housing, the regular strategy whilst resulting in less housing results in having 4 stone houses. It works out cheaper in the long run to never build wooden houses.

My question is this: Why don't you pause the buildings after laborers remove the resources from the construction sites? It would give you the wood and stone a tiny bit faster.

Would it not be more efficient to build a temporary stockpile up by the cart so you can gather you initial wood stockpile much faster? Also, how much food do you get from the hunter? All this stuff in his circle is bad for his output isn't it?
@Pinstar10 жыл бұрын
Shorter for the wood cutters to drop off their lumber, yes...but then all that wood has to be brought down to the main building area anyway during the building phase and will slow down the construction of our hub. Having playtested this build into many successful cities, if there *is* a decrease in hunter effectiveness, it isn't enough to cause food or leather shortages early in the game, even with an aggressive early population growth.

Is this build just as viable nowadays? I've followed this vid step-by-step and I've got everything done early-winter. I have more food then you do, but only 9 adults and 5 children. It seems to work fine but I'm wondering if the difference of 3 adults will spell disaster. I've got 1 woodcutter, 2 gatherers, 3 foresters and 3 hunters atm. And last but not least: Awesome video-series!
@Pinstar8 жыл бұрын
+exilenl It should be, but one thing I learned after this series concluded was that the seed not only randomized the map, but also your starting villagers. One map might have more adults than another. And since every adult counts with this strat, a low-adult map might not have enough manpower to pull this off.

There's no reason you can't start an easy or medium setting like this. This Crossroads build can be done on any starting setting. Just don't allow the houses to be built on easy or else you'll have 12 houses by the end of year one but you can kind of force the villagers to move also by destroying that pre-existing houses which may or may not be in a position you wanted them in anyway

I don’t understand how you do this? When you’re in summer, I’m in late autumn. It seems like my seasons go faster than everyone else’s, even on 2x speed, and I don’t understand how you’re doing it. Everyone freezes to death before I get the houses built. Please help :(

Make sure you pause it before you start big expansions and planning.

build 1 house first instead of other buildings, your people just need 1 house to survive winter.

What do you mean by unorthodox build? Every playthrough I've seen started with a said crossroads and doing the same stuf in the beginning

If your woodcutter had not been educated, would you have toggled between 0 and 1 workers until you found one that was?
@PoppyGaming4310 жыл бұрын
Normally at the beginning every adult is educated ...
@Pinstar10 жыл бұрын
RadikaleRusse23 This is correct, BUT the starting children will be growing up uneducated until you can get a school built. One of these uneducated kids-turned-adults might make their way into your woodcutter and really hamper your town's growth. The map seed seems to impact the proportion of starting adults to starting children. So a more child-heavy seed will not only have fewer starting adults, but also more uneducated workers early on.

This video starts with 8/0/6 for pop, but I only ever start with 8/0/2--was there an update since this video?

I have now watched videos 1 through 42 and finally purchased the game yesterday (8/18/14 . Now I can truly say that this is an awesome accomplishment with Ficklewood. First day I lost two populations and the third is dying out fast and I'm really not sure they will survive. I tried to follow your method to the letter but without success. I shall persevere until I have found what works for me. An instant love on first seed.

Interesting idea but I think you've cluttered your gatherer's forest too much. A house and perhaps the storage barn is fine, but not everything else. The gatherer's hut's production is going to be minimal. Using the foresters to grow trees is a good idea though. With the Colonial Charter mod (which everyone should download once you've got the hang of the basic game) you can build the specialist storage barns and stock piles, which would really aid the efficiency of this sort of build.
