I still have from new my BDP-51FD, great player which also does a good job of upscaling dvd's to 1080p, only issue as shown in this video is that compared to more modern players it's really slow to load certain blu-ray discs especially more recent titles or those with complex menu screens or a lot of special features, nothing you can do as it's just the "older" tech inside. Just have one question, you say you brought it to play cd's, if so then why didn't you just buy a regular cd player, those don't normally need firmware updates to function.

Thanks for your comment. I could have used a standalone CD player but was interested to see how well such an expensive player in its time would be like now. Hoepfully the DAC used is premium quality like the rest of it. DVD players and Blu Ray players are a good buy in the 2nd hand market if you are only going to use them for playing CD's because often this part of the player hasn't been used to play many CD's or none at all so you are probably getting something with a fresh laser CD LED. Personally I have had dvd players where they stop playing DVD's but can still read CD's. The electronics in this player are substantial and the whole player is especially heavy and sturdy which should lend itself to playing discs very well. The outputs on the back are an added bonus as in recent years the consumer/budget end sometimes only have an HDMI as output and nothing else. The firmware update was just me bringing the player up to date with the latest firmware, albeit if a bit old itself.

Thinking of picking one of these up as a second Blu-ray/dvd player as some do come multi-regional and I’ve got a load discs I can’t watch. For around £100 it looks pretty good.

Thats great - good luck! They are a solid piece of kit and look good in the lounge. Don't spend too much on it as its still older tech!

@@AvidRetro I appreciate it! Did you notice any improvement or did update before you started really using it?

The initial cold start up with the new f/w seemed about the same. Switching on after standby seemed slightly quicker. It seems to be performing okay so no drawback yet to the update. Out of interest was your machine on the original f/w ?

Данная модель поддерживает MKV?! 🤔

No it doesn't which is a shame but I guess its the age of these devices. As far as I am aware they only record and play mpeg-2 format.
