That big jog wheels means a lot if you been working with Pioneer CDJ products for a number of years. One fantastic review of the DDJ-SZ. My friend & dj partner Kool Raul has the Numark NS7-II & he blew my mind, but because of smaller jog wheels it doesn't have that cdj feel that I'm accustom to. You don't look stupid, because of the NS7-II, you know Pioneer wasn't going to take it on chin, they had to comeback strong. It looks like I'm going to transfer my SL-1 loops to Serato DJ. Once again fantastic review on DDJ-SZ. SCHOOL OUT!!!!!!!!!!!
@djaramriley26410 жыл бұрын
Jason- with the DVS feature on the sz you can connect 2 cdj's , or 2 turn tables with time code vinyl, or whatever else will work and it will allow you to control serato on those as well. So you can have channels 1&2 on the sz and control channels 3&4 on your tables!

omg, what i love most in it is the fact that it can actually work with turn tables, so amazing

I just picked this unit up yesterday. I know it’s like 5 years old, but it still outperforms most of the controllers offered today. I found it at Guitar Center, in excellent condition (with 12inch Skinz cover), with tax and 2-year coverage for $700 even with my Pioneer DDJ SR2 trade-in. It also had a Gator flight case. I couldn’t pass that up. This thing is a BEAST. The EFX is gonna take some getting used to but the sound this thing puts out is amazing. Thanks for the in-depth review. Holla.

Nice! Make sure you upgrade the firmware. I believe that added some features. Look it up first to see what it adds, but I think it added post fader fx and a couple of other things.

DJ TLM, regarding your comment on the lack of sharpness of the crossfader at the 16:30 min mark, I did some research on the full version of the manual. Pioneer has the crossfader set to a factory setting of a value of 6 out of 52(or something like that) and can be adjusted down to 0. This adjustment is under the "utilities mode configuration" in the full manual on pg. 26 section title is crossfader lag I believe.... (BTW the full manual is available online but the unit comes with only a basic edition of the manual, which only has 6 pages less, weird LOL). But this should resolve your concern about the gap in the fader for you!
@djTLMtv10 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I should have the unit back here when I get the NS7-2 and I will see if I can fix that.

Outstanding video! Just a bit of info, in case it ever helps someone. The "conductive touch" is basically "capacitive sensing" (the same as on a touchscreen). Basically, both the platter and the human body have a certain amount of capacitance. When one comes in contact with the other, this "normal" measurement changes. The circuitry senses this change and reacts. There are several other objects you could probably use in place of your hand (for example, styluses or gloves made for touch screens) that would allow you to keep your hands protected from the elements (in case of an outdoor gig) but still pass the capacitance to the jog wheel.

Great Review! Now let's hope that Native Instruments comes out a new beast of controller to match this one for all us Traktor Users! - Oh and just to add sth. to what you said about the crossfader compared to the one used in the DJM 900: => Eventhough the DJM 900 is not a battle/scratch mixer they changed the crossfader in the SRT Version (which I'm guessing you are using) and it is now the same as used in the DJM-T1 f.ex: "High-performance faders “MAGVEL CROSS FADER” for enhanced durability and operability"! The "normal" (Traktor Scratch Certified) DJM 900 had a different / "worse" crossfader! :(
@djTLMtv10 жыл бұрын
Yup, I have the DJM900SRT. The fader in the DDJ-SZ is a Magvel cross fader too, but the curve just isn't as sharp as the one on my 900SRT. Thanks for the info! You're right, Native Instruments should step their game up and add a full size controller similar to the NS7-2 and DDJ-SZ to their line-up

DJ TLM, another important question. Please look at the 20 minute mark, on deck 4, the marker rotates and jumpes a full half circle around, yet no cue buttons were pushed. Was this a technical bug? That is to say, I noticed the marker was jumping a lot. Thank you for being the first to demo this unit outside of pioneer.
@djTLMtv10 жыл бұрын
Yes, the marker always starts at the top with every new cue point. even if you don't trigger the cue points. In this case the beat had a cue point at the first kick, the next hi hat and the first snare. So that's 3 cue points in a row within the first 2 seconds of the track. That's why it was skipping so that is normal
@simon4shizzle10 жыл бұрын
djTLMtv thank you for the explanation dj TLM!

Great tutorial djTLMtv. With regard to the sound quality, does the DDJ-SX provide the same output quality as the SZ, and how do they compare to the industry standard DJM 900's? The reason I ask is that I would much rather use a controller than the CDJ's/DJM setup, but not if it comes at a cost to live Sound quality...

I wasn't able to compare the sound quality so I'm not sure if it't the same as a DJM900

@afk144810 жыл бұрын
Brother Wolf Glenn Smith djTLMtv If you look at the tech specs of both the SX and SZ and dim 900 nxs and CDJ 2000 nxs. The SZ features all the exact same audio chips as the djm900 and cdj 2000. Meaning it should have identical, if not better sound quality, due to the fact the SZ does not have RCA (unbalanced) cables running from the cdjs to the djm (these RCA or 'phono' cables can cause noise and low level harmonic distortion) As for the SX it has lower quality sound cards than the SZ and Nexus equipment and most likely less headroom on the master channel.

Hey TLM!! Great review as always bro ... If you were to compare with the Numark NS7II, would you say this is better than the NS7II? Also, I noticed you didn't mention sound quality: I'm assuming you didn't because there's no need to because of Pioneer's legendary sound quality and this unit is no exception? Also, what's the name of the track you used at about the 7-8 minute mark of the video ... Thanks

@TLM, I had a DDJ-SR and some other controllers in the past to use it at private parties with some friends, it is ok and fun to play with. My current setup is a Xone DB4 and 2- K2 controllers but I miss the fun using the Jog wheels -> real mixing. There are no single deck MIDI players on the market at the moment or you have to buy CDJ or XDJ 1000 players. The thing is, I prefer to use a laptop with Traktor, it never let me down because I take care of my laptop. I'm curious: Is there a significant sound quality difference on the output of the DDJ -SZ (or nowadays DDJ RZ) and the popular DJ mixers like DJM nexus or Xone mixers? Most tracks I have are AIFF format.....

When I saw the DDJ-SZ was announced I saw a solution to a problem that I've been having, buying a new pioneer setup without getting served divorce papers. My question, is the DDJ-SZ a close enough substitute for those on a "budget" (budget meaning I have 2 grand to spend but not 3.5+). This is for home/house party/recording mixes. The DDJ-SX looked nice but after playing with it was just to small for me and my gorilla like hands

Great job on this review, I wanted to ask you did you check the back of the unit too see if it has a removable fader plate? Does it have any way of changing the fade? I didn't like any of the other models from the DDJ's because of the faders. I own a VCI400 and just upgraded the crossfader to a cf-x2 from Vestax, you can also install this fader into a ddjsx. I had the same problem you noticed on the crossfader with the VCI400 until I changed the fader. Now my VCI feels good, I hope this issues gets fix or it gets a nice update .

@djTLMtv10 жыл бұрын
I think both units would be great, but I will have my hands on experience with the NS7-2 in a week or so. After that I could give you my choice, but it depends on what you like/need. If you are used to working with Pioneer equipment then I think the DDJ-SZ will feel more familiar to work with. If you know that you would like to be able to do a lot of turntablism stuff then the NS7-2 will be the better choice for sure. I'm doing a full comparison video with the two in a week or two, but as far as functionality they do have a lot in common.

Went to a Sam Ash music store here in California with intents of purchasing a NS7II, it was in a box and could not be played with, they had this here the DDJ SZ to mess around with and oh man what a nice toy! I have been wanting to dj and mess with music my whole life, and since 17 (23 now) I have wanted some turntables and a mixer to play with. Since then, I have only had virtual dj on my mac to play with.... Now that I can get an actual physical controller, I need help with one to choose!! I love mixing music, I love the art of scratching and feel of it. People have said to start with something cheaper and work my way up. But, I would hate to regret a purchase when there is better tech out there! I am not sure what is the newest or best machine out right now, but I have the NS7 II and this SZ in mind. What can you recommend for me? Is there anything newer than these? Is there something in between? Are each the bang for their buck? I would love to purchase what is at the top of the line in this type of technology. Any response little or big can help? Ill take comments for anyone! Thank You!! p.s I might post this on a newer video if you dont mind, just to capture a diff audience.

The pioneers are nice but i preferred the moving platters vs static ones. It's all about personal preference and some cases budget. I plan on getting the SZ2 which will eventually come out. Companies like Numark & Pioneer are putting out new controllers like how Apple are releasing iPhones each year.

My brother quick question? so I understand you could use the controller with Traktor as well and are you planning on doing a demo? Lastly if you wanted to include a RMX-1000 on this type of setup, can you do it? is that possible? how would that work without a return / send? Please advise! Thanks for the great tutorial!

Thanks for the DVS inputs!! Wondering if it's comfortable scratching on turntables with them being far from the mixer...?

Awesome review man. One question though. In your honest opinion, is the SZ really worth the money in comparison to the SX2? is the SZ really that much better?

DJ JUGZ No, it's not that much better. This is all about personal preference. The size makes it feel more like a set of cdj's with a mixer and for some people that can be important. The SX2 packs a lot of the same features in a smaller package.

DJ JUGZ I would say depends on what type of crowds you play at what venues and what genre of music. Electronic music this puppy is definitely worth it. Hip Hop go Vinyl. Just my opinion though.

DJ TLM, I saw another DDJ-SZ video posted yesterday by kross321, showing that the jogwheels have issues detecting "soft" touches (close proximity touching) - if you search for the youtube user kross321 + ddj-sz. I'm wondering if you still have the unit, if you can test it out too? Thanks!

I will have that unit here again soon for a comparison video so I will look into that. Thanks for the tip

Nice review! But Im waiting for the Numark NS7 II review! Are you doing one anytime soon or have I missed it somehow? Greez
@djTLMtv10 жыл бұрын
Yup, waiting for the unit. They had to order a new review unit because some reviewer damaged the last one ;)

Damn ;) Im really looking forward to that review. Please consider comparing the new unit with the Numark NS7 mk I. Theres alot of mk I units floating around for a really good price, so Im thinking about whether I should get one of the older Units for cheap or get the new one.. but besides the performance pads Im not to keen on the new one having a 4-channel mixer section, because I really dont need 4 channels to mix, and the unit itself is even bigger and heavier than the "old" one. I would love to see vestax making a vestax vci 380-like controller with motorized platter though! Could you also make a turntableist mix on the vestax vci 380? That would be another alternative for me ;) Greetings from Switzerland, keep up the good work TLM!

I will compare the NS7 and NS7-2 when I get the NS7-2 (asap)
