Consider the mathematics of a spring and how a wave would propagate through the wire, around and around that coil allowing for various tensions, frequencies, modes of vibration etc, all the basic spring maths. Now consider that as just a single string yet with all those properties. As though the XYZ of standard coordinates each had those properties to it. Its sort of like that.
