The biggest no-no in my classroom is when a pupil laughs at another for giving the wrong answer, it’s an act of utter contempt and all it does is make it harder for those children for whom putting a hand up to answer a question is a supreme act of bravery (I had one child in my class a few years ago that barely spoke all year, despite my best efforts). By laying out his opinion as an absolute, and most egregiously, using a novice’s performance to illustrate and reinforce it, was an act of bullying akin to laughing at the shy kid who got the answer wrong. Shame on him. He was obviously near the front of the line for talent, but didn’t bother hanging around to get the accompanying humility.

I'm assuming Daniel Madisons motivation for saying what he said was that lay audiences should never know that any sort of gaffed or gimmicked cards should exist. I remember there being a discussion of the sort with anniversary Walt's. Letting an audience know that a double faced card did exist ....was a route some magician's we're way against....and the other train of thought was that it wasnt a "gaffed" card....it was a piece of art created using magic etc.....anyway, he was a bit harsh with his comments. I like anniversary Walt's....but I do think a double faced card shouldn't be shown....a card like the ones used in pip trip...is different....cuz what on earth can that expose? Can a lay person look at the card long enough and come to some conclusion that you can do other effects with it? Lol. I don't know ....long story short....I like the idea much better of fixing a misprinted card. It's a problem and the solution is magic......with the right presentation and motivation. You can make virtually anything work in magic...I appreciate Daniel Madisons work...as do I appreciate yours. But I do not appreciate putting down another artists work, because you don't agree with the thinking behind it. Especially on a public forum. When other performers talk like that....they give off the impression that they invented magic lol. Anyway, keep up the good work.

I love Daniel Madison he’s one the magicians who got me into magic but I just don’t agree with him. Personally I do magic for entertainment not to prove magic is real. So with that said I don’t think pip trip is a “disgrace to magic” thanks Doug for the video 👍

Exactly and consider the source. DM is big into pure slight of hand. Should have chose his words as carefully as he practices his magic. Disgraceful?! Even a beginners card trick with a great story line to get people to buy into what you are doing makes for incredible magic/entertainment. "Magic is entertainment" -Aldo Colombini

So I watched Daniel’s video on this and I’ll be honest I strongly strongly disagree. I believe that magic is dependant on the performance around it. The gaffs mentioned in the video all have the potential to be strong effects and pip trip not only represents incredible skill it also demonstrates something impossible! I’m afraid I believe Daniel is wrong here but I won’t attack him for it. But Doug, just keep doing what you’re doing, as you deliver incredible entertainment all the time!!

Love the defective deck and to an audience member when preformed correctly and with an emotional hook/story to get them to buy into it, it is a work of art. While we are at it lets get rid of... Cardtoon, 3 card monte, Invisible deck, double backers, and numerous others. Oh, and let's get rid of creativity too...

I also think Daniel Madison is a very talented magician. His opinion on gaff card magic is valid, but he doesn't qualify or justify it in any credible way. It is an empty argument. There's nothing wrong with shunning gaffs, but if you're publicly criticising another magician's trick, you should at least say why you dislike it. In truth, I believe comments like this serve more to support Maddison's performing persona. They might not even reflect what he really thinks about gaffs. I remember that he expressed similar disgust for gaff cards when he released "The Gaff System" with Eric Jones, Carlen Morelli and Ellusionist (he also mentioned "Pip Trip" then as well). The funny thing about Madison is that the trick he's most famous for, "Angle Z", is featured on The Gaff System. It uses the travelling pip plot, ending with a similar impossible object to the one used in "Pip Trip". If you don't want your audience to examine the gaff card in "Pip Trip", you do not have to hand them out. In fact, I thought you performed it that way, Doug. Starting with a "misprinted card" and ending with a regular Four. I'd interpret Madison's comments as a general dislike of performing magic with gaffed cards. I can see how they don't suit his style. But as Eugene Burger said, "magic is very much like a house with many rooms." And one of those rooms is full of gaffs!

@@DougConn I just watched Madison's video in full; I was too kind. Although I dig his artistic vibe, this is the continued thoughtless ramblings of an egomaniac. Gaff card magic seems acceptable, so long as you use Maddison-approved gaffs! And if you disagree with him or perform poorly, he'll hunt you down and teach you how to perform magic correctly, according to his half-baked magic manifesto. Even if this is a joke, I think we can all do without this nonsense. It is behaviour like this that can alienate some beginners.

Hey Doug, a very classy and disgraceful response, I guess anything goes for clicks these days, I think that’s DM ego talking, I’m sure when he started in magic he had plenty of disgraceful gaffs as he put it, besides some of the most simple things get great responses, I’ve seen a spectator brought to tears with just a rubber band and a deck of cards, DM is correct in one thing, there is a fine line in being seen as a god and a DH, and to me he’s more on the DH side right now, but hey that’s my opinion, keep up the great content👍👍

...I hadn't seen this video before just now, nor the one from Madison. I just lost a good deal of the respect I had for that man. I've never watched too many of his videos because, despite his enormous talent, his teaching style isn't one that is particularly effective for me, personally. But to call gaff cards a "disgrace to magic" is just... confusing. Especially given that I think I've seen him use some, if memory serves. Tsk tsk.
